Labor activist Afshin Osanlou suffered a heart attack in Prison

HRANA News Agency – Labor activist Afshin Osanlou suffered a heart attack in Rajai-Shahr Prison and passed away.

According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), Afshin Osanloo was a political prisoner and also Mansour Osanlou’s brother.  Before fleeing Iran, Mansour Osanlou was the president of Drivers Trade Union of Tehran & Suburbs Bus Company.  He also served time in prison for his union-related activities.

In December 2010, Afshin Osanloo was arrested and subsequently spent three months in Ward 209 of Evin Prison without being allowed to contact his family to let them know what has happened to him.  In May 2011, he was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of conspiracy against national security and propaganda against the regime.  This sentence was later upheld by the appeals court.  During the trial, Osanloo was denied access to an attorney.

On Wednesday, June 6, 2012, Afshin Osanloo was abruptly transferred to the Special Security Ward of Rajai-Shahr Prison.  The order was apparently issued by the Disciplinary Council in Evin Prison.  No explanations were provided to the prisoner or his family.  Prior to his abrupt transfer, Osanloo was serving his prison term at Evin.
