An Erfan-e-Halghe Activist Sentenced to Imprisonment and Whipping

HRANA News Agency – Masume Zia, Erfan-e-Halghe activist has been sentenced to 1 year in prison and 74 lashes by the court of appeal.

According the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), branch number 54 of the cour of appeal of Tehran has informed her lawyer of this verdict on Monday June 8th.

Mr. Moshkani, Masume Zia’s lawyer told HRANA’s reporter: “Regarding the content of the case, there could be a possibility for a better decision however and unfortunately the maximum possible punishment has been issued.”

Masume Zia had been arrested in a gathering of Erfan-e-halghe supporters in front of the Revolutionary Court and was tried by judge Ahmadzadeh on February 7, 2015 on charge of disturbing the public order and sentenced to 1 year in prison and 74 lashes.

Masume Zia had been arrested along with 15 other activists who have been sentenced in total to 37 years of imprisonment.

Ms. Zia had been arrested also in 2006 in the gathering of June 12, 2006 to support changes in the laws in favor of women’s rights and was sentenced then to 1 year of suspended imprisonment.

The court of appeal has also confirmed the 1-year-imprisonment sentence of Leyla Jamaat and 5-year-imprisonment sentence of Mr. Tajik, 2 other Erfan-e-Halghe activists.
