Hamid Babaei Deprived of Proper Medical Treatment

HRANA News Agency – Hamid Babaei, imprisoned student in Rajai Shahr prison, has been under several psychological pressures during the last 8 months.

According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran (HRANA), Hamid Babaei, Ph.D Student of University of Liege, Belgium, in chapel of ward 1, in Rajai Shahr prison, during the last eight months in addition to the denial of close visit with his family, has been facing various problems and psychological pressures.

A friend of Hamid Babaei, about his conditions in prison, told HRANA’s reporter, “Even in Nowrooz, that most families had a close visit, Hamid was not included. His day of “booth visit” unlike other political prisoners is on Saturdays along with ordinary prisoners, who have been, generally, charged with drugs related crimes or murder.”

The imprisoned student, despite the principle of separation of offenses stipulated in the regulations of the prisons, is held along with prisoners of ordinary crimes and sometimes dangerous prisoners in Rajai Shahr prison.

Mr. Babaei’s friend, about being held with ordinary prisoners, said, “Hamid says; in chapel of ward 1, where he is held now, the smell of drugs disturbs his sleeping at night, and their personal belongings will be usually stolen by bullies in the ward, who are dangerous prisoners, and Hamid and his friends do not have the right to complain.”

Hamid Babaei was arrested in August last year after returning to Iran, and detained in solitary confinement in Evin Prison. On 21st December, in Tehran Islamic Revolution Court Branch 15, presided by Judge Salvati, in a 10 minutes trial, without a lawyer of choice and in the silence of public lawyer, on charges of “Espionage and contact with the Warring States”, was sentenced to 6 years imprisonment and 4 years suspended sentence. The court of Appeal, presided by judge Movahed, also precisely confirmed the verdict.

According to HRANA, Kobra Parsajoo, Mr Babaei’s wife, also was sentenced to 6 months suspended imprisonment, by the court.
