Iran sentences Sunni Iraqi man to 33 years in prison

HRANA News Agency – Iran’s Supreme Court has confirmed a 33-year prison sentence for a Sunni Iraqi man on charges of ‘Moharabeh’ [enmity against God].

According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), Marivan Abdolkarim Reza, a devout Sunni Muslim originally from Kirkuk in Iraq, was sentenced to 33 years imprisonment by Branch 28 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court.

Those who knew him say he was not involved in violence, and that it is unclear why the court convicted him of ‘enmity against God’.

Marivan Abdolkarim Reza, also known as Marivan Kirkuki, is an Iraqi citizen who travelled to Tehran in Iran for work. He was arrested at his workplace on 29 November 2012 by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department, who later handed him over to the Ministry of Intelligence.

He was held in solitary confinement for 9 months in Ward 209 of Tehran’s Evin prison, which is under the control of the Ministry of Intelligence, before being sentenced to 33 years imprisonment by Branch 28 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court.

He is currently held in Rajai Shahr prison in Karaj.
