Maryam Naghash Zargaran on Hunger Strike in Evin Prison

HRANA News Agency – Maryam (Nasim) Naghash Zargaran, political prisoner of women’s ward of Evin prison has gone on hunger strike in protest to lack of attention to her diseases, her case and opposition to her requests of parole and furlough since May 25, 2016. The Christion refused to go to the visit on May 29, 2016. Following this action most of the others in the ward also refused to go to the visit in support of his appeal.
According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), despite the critical condition of Maryam (Nasim) Naghash Zargaran, imprisoned Christion in women’s ward of Evin prison, her transfer to a medical center outside of prison is being prevented. The prisoner of conscience has gone on hunger strike in protest to her condition.
A close to Zargaran family by announcing the news, said to HRANA’s reporter: “Maryam could not get up from the bed since May 25, 2016 and her fever is very high.”
The source continued: “Maryam refused to go to visit following her protests on May 29, 2016. Following this action most of the others in the ward also refused to go to the visit in support of his appeal.”
This source added: “She is in a very serious physical condition. She had already lost 25 kg before the hunger strike and suffers from a new disease that causes extreme dizziness and headaches. She is not in a good mood. She has been depressed in the prison and consumes antidepressants. She has requested for retrial but recently her family were informed that there was not such a request in her case and she had to apply again.”
HRANA had reported previously that Maryam (Nasim) Naghash Zargaran, political prisoner of women’s ward of Evin prison has constant dizziness and pain in her ear. The doctors in prison’s clinic had told her after primary treatment that she should have not moved her head for two weeks, and if the condition would have remained the same, she would have to undergo a surgery. This is while the prosecutor is rejecting the request for a medical furlough.”
Nasim Zargaran has been diagnosed with ASD and had a heart operation 9 years ago and needs constant medical care. Besides, her hands and legs get numb and she suffers from chronic joints and spine pain during last year. She was ordered to have 5 days of hospitalization and immediate physiotherapy sessions which was denied by the prosecutor and she is still suffering from the pain. Ms. Zargaran has also been diagnosed with severe anemia, diabetes, and high blood cholesterol after the arrest, but due to rejection of her requests, the treatments have been halted.
Maryam (Nasim) Naghash Zargaran was summoned to intelligence office for the first time in February 2011 and was interrogated. These interrogations which were accompanied by threatening and harassing her family members and happened in unofficial locations, continued around the subject of home churches.
Finally, she was summoned by the security police on the phone and was arrested, Saeid Abedini, Iranian-American citizen who came back to Iran for foundation of an orphanage in North of Iran was arrested, too. On the same day her father’s house was investigated by the police and her books, religious pamphlets and personal accessories were seized.
She was transferred to Evin prison in order to be finger printed and then transferred to Vozara building without any charges. She was kept there for 5 days and nights with minimum facilities for living and was interrogated there. The main topic of the interrogations was home-churches, reason of increasing number of them, their members and quality of rituals in these churches.
Ms. Zargaran was transferred to Evin prison and in branch number 2 of Shahid Moghadas charged with propaganda against the regime.
After 19 days of being under temporary arrest, she was released on the bail of 700 million IRR. She was sentenced to 4 years in prison in branch number 28 of the revolutionary court by judge Moghiseh, on charge of collusion and acts against the national security. This is while she never had a hearing about this allegation.
She is currently serving her 4 years.
