According to Kalameh, on Tuesday, May 18th, Mohammad Noorizad was taken out of his cell for an alleged walk in fresh air. Thereafter, five Evin prison guards violently attacked him, viscously beating him. During the attack Mr. Noorizad sustained a severe blow to the head, which the prison doctor has diagnosed as a severe concussion and as a result of which his vision has diminished.

After being subjected to such a barbaric and illegal attack by Evin prison officials, Mr. Noorizad has gone on a dry strike, refusing all foods and liquids. Mr. Noorizad has told his family that he will not stay alive if current conditions continue.

In addition, after his attack, Mr. Noorizad has been transferred from his two person cell in Ward 240 of Evin prison to an unsanitary and light-less hole, lacking any air circulation or basic hygienic necessities such as a sink or a toilet.

Mohammad Noorizad had written three letters to the Supreme Leader as well as the head of the Judiciary and had published his letters on his personal weblog. Thereafter, he was arrested on December 21, 2009, on charges of “insulting the Supreme Leadership and the head of the Judiciary”  and has been held under arrest since. He wrote his fourth letter to the Supreme Leader from inside Evin prison.

It should be noted that the lower court has sentenced this artist to three and half years in prison and 50 lashes.
