Sohail Arabi

HRANA News Agency – Sohail Arabi, prisoner of conscience, with a sentence of seven years and six months imprisonment, who had been arrested in December 2013, is being held in ward 350 of Evin prison. Relatives of Mr. Arabi believe that chasing his complaint against the internal websites as an “Accusation and spreading lies”, is the reason of continued opposition to his furlough and parole.

According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran (HRANA), Soheil Arabi’s death sentence was dropped last year, and by the new sentence he was first sentenced to 90 months imprisonment and two years of religious studies to prove his regret and then his sentence of 90 months fell by 12 months to 78 months.

A close source to his family told HRANA’s reporter: “Mr. Arabi’s relatives believe that chasing his complaint against the internal websites as an “Accusation and spreading lies”, is the reason of continued opposition to his furlough and parole. Sohail previously had sued the website of Dana because of accusations against him”.

The source continued to explain: “The last time was two weeks ago that his request for a furlough was rejected. They did not give an accurate explanation, saying; his attitudes had not changed in the prison. It is not in their control. They are saying indirectly that it had been rejected by the higher authorities, may be by the Revolutionary Guards. But his family believes the reason for this opposition is Soheils’s complaints”.

Sohail Arabi was born on August 22, 1985. He is married and has a daughter.

Mr. Arabi and his wife were self-employed and working in their photography studio. The IRGC forces of Sarallah Base arrested him on December 7, 2013 at his house and transferred him to ward 2-A of Evin prison.

After two months interrogation by the revolutionary guards, he was tried in branch number 12 of Media and Culture Court and charged with propaganda against the regime, insulting founder of Islamic Republic, insulting officials and sacrilege, and then transferred to ward 350 of Evin prison.

In June 2014, he was tried for Sab-e-Nabi (insulting the prophet) in branch number 71 of criminal court of province, by judge Khorasani, and according to lawsuit and request of prosecutor’s representative and by the sentence of the court, he was sentenced to death.

Mr. Arabi was charged with Sab-e-Nabi based on his posts on a Facebook page and his death sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court in December 2014. But after the efforts made by his lawyers, his lawsuit went to the Supreme Court and was treated again in branch number 34 and he was saved from execution.

Previously, following the lies published by three web sites of Farsnews, Jahannews, and Dana, against Sohail Arabi, and complains of Sohail Arabi’s lawyer, prosecutor ordered investigations.

This sentence is issued, while according to law, when defendant claim that his statements were by negligence, mistake, or while he/she was drunk or during anger or without paying attention to the meaning or quoting, then it will not Sab-e-Nabi.

This prisoner of conscientious is currently in ward 350 of Evin prison.
