Monthly Report – An Overview of the Human Rights Situation in Iran for Dey 1395 Iranian Calendar (21 Dec 2016 – 19 Jan 2017)

HRANA News Agency – The Department of Statistics and Publications of the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRAI) has published the following monthly report for the Iranian calendar Month of Dey (21st Dec-19th Jan) on the human rights situation in Iran. This report cannot perfectly and comprehensively reflect the details of human rights concerns in Iran due to the limitation and bans on independent human rights organizations and their activities in Iran.

It should be noted that in addition to the monthly reports, the Department of Statistics and Publication of the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRAI) publishes a comprehensive and analytical annual report at the end of each calendar year.

An Analytical Overview on the Human Rights violations in Iran for Dey 1395 Iranian Calendar (21 Dec 2016 – 19 Jan 2017 Gregorian calendar)

In Dey 1395 (Iranian Calendar), The systematic violation of human rights in Iran continued with 71 executions in the provinces of Alborz, West Azerbaijan, East Azerbaijan, Khorasan Razavi, Fars, Kermanshah, Gilan, Markazi and Hormozgan.

Execution

Unfortunately there has been significant number of executions in Day 1395. Some of the most noted reports regarding the execution of prisoners in this month includes execution of at least 19 prisoners in Rajai Shahr Prison (Gohardasht Prison) and Central prison of Karaj, execution of 4 prisoners in Mashhad, execution of one chikld offender in Kerman and the execution of at least 3 prisoners in Ghazvin prison.

Despite all the executions, we have witnessed cases of pardoning of convicts and exonerations from executions as well.

Religious and Ethnic Minorities

The violations of the religious and ethnic minorities’ rights continued in this month. The most notable cases were the violent arrest of Sajjad Afrouzian in Malekan, injury of 3 Balouch citizens by the direct fire of Revolutionary guards in Sarbaz and arrest of 49 people in Zahedan due to protests against demolition of houses.

In connection to the violation of the rights of the Baha’i Citizens; several discriminations and persecutions continued as before.  Some examples are: The Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans did not officially recognize the Baha’i martyr, depriving Nazanin Nekouseresht, a Baha’i student, from completing her studies.

In connection to the violation of the rights of the Sunni Citizens there has been some reports, including the report on two of the professors of the Hozeh Ein Ul-Uloom Gosht being summoned to the Ministry Of Intelligence.

In regards to Dervishes rights some of the reports published in Dey 1395 includes: Arrest of a Gonabadi Dervish while on exile in Bandar Abbas, one hour long arrest of a person for being the host of Gonabadi Deravish gatherings in Qom.

Children

The following are of the most notable reports, among the reports concerning children’s rights: More than 2350 Students are deprived of Education in Northern Khorasan. Identifying 109 malnutrition under 6 year old children in Mahneshan. Shocking murder of 5 month old baby by its mother in Shiraz.

Women

Despite all the slogans for gender equality, the government did not take any steps forward in the direction towards gender equality in the month of Dey, and the rights of Iranian women continued to be violated during this month. Following are some of the most notable reports published on the violation of women’s rights: Increase in domestic violence in Mazandaran. Arrest of two female bikers in Dezfoul. The governmental program in fighting bad Hijab in the privet sector, during the first 6 month of the year. 9500 domestic violence incidents recorded in Tehran.

Labor Rights

There has been numerous reports of violations of Worker’s rights in Dey 1395 (Iranian Calendar). The following are a few examples of these reports: The deputy Minister of the Ministry of The Roads and Urban Development stated: 1500 workers die per year. Only In the first 9 months of the year, 65 reports of death due to work accidents in Mazandaran. Two worker’s protests.

Unions

Among the reports regarding unions and union rights, the report on the four Mass protests of applicants of Mehr Pardis Housing was of the most highlighted reports.

Health and Environment

In the field of health and environmental protection, there were numerous reports mainly involving draught and air pollution. Following are of the most noteworthy reports in this regard: The epidemic influenza in birds left 2422 death birds in the wet land of Mighan in Arak. Disposal of hospital and contaminated waste near the Zahedan Metropolis. Some of the schools across Iranian provinces were announced closed due to air pollution. Haze in Ahvaz air reached 12 times more than the limit. Tabriz Air pollution continued for 15 days. Water in Sistan and Balouchestan province reached critical stage.

The most highlighted reports of the month

In this section of the monthly report, the most controversial and publicly sensitive cases of violations of human rights are highlighted. The special attention given to following reports does not indicate that the content of these reports are of greater violation of human rights.

The following are the most highlighted reports of the month: Arrest of two female bikers in Dezfoul. A young girl was thrown acid at for saying no to suitor. Increase of domestic violence in Mazandaran. A student was burn with hot ruler as a form of punishment by the teacher in Charousai. Physical Punishment of a student in Hamedan cased him phobia of school. 6 abundant newborns per month in the streets of Karaj. Discovery of a one day old new born in a garbage bin in Khomein. A surgeon refused to perform an emergency liver transplant due to wrongfully thinking the patient is not Iranian and Is Afghan. Cancellation of music concerts and performance licenses in Arak till Further notice.

 

The least underlined human rights violations

Unlike the reports mentioned in the previous section, many human rights’ reports received little or no attention from social media, bloggers, Internet activists, who are considered key contributors of the public opinion. It should be note that this unintentional or intentional negligence has results in continuation and further spread of human rights violations in Iran.

The first on this list that receive little public attention is the execution of two prisoners in Rasht that did not receive much attention from the public. The following reports also received little attention from the public: execution of a prisoner in Maraghe. Execution of at least one person in Rasht Prison. Demolition of 600 year old antiquities in Darab in order to build storage. Injury of 3 Balouch citizens by the direct fire of Revolutionary guards in Sarbaz. Violent arrest of Sajjad Afrouzian in Malekan. Summon of Ardebil Activists to intelligent police. A citizen of Ahvaz was in custody for more than two months while his relatives were unaware of his where about. 49 people in Ahvaz were arrested in protests against demolishing houses.
