Singer Vafa Ahmadpour Tried on Political Charges

On July 17, a trial session for Vafa Ahmadpour, a singer known as “Vafadar,” was held in the Revolutionary Court.

During this session, held today, Wednesday, July 17, 2024, in the Revolutionary Court, Mr. Ahmadpour defended himself against the charge of “assembly and collusion to commit crimes against national security through collaboration with regime opponents.”

Vafa Ahmadpour, a singer known as “Vafadar,” was arrested by security forces in Shiraz on May 9 and transferred to The Ministry of Intelligence’s detention facility in Shiraz, known as House No 100. He was later transferred to the central detention facility of this city, located in Adelabad Prison.

Ahmadpour was previously arrested on February 4, 2024, by security forces at his residence and was held in detention for over 15 days before being released on bail from Evin Prison. He was then sentenced by the Revolutionary Court to one year in prison on charges of propaganda against the regime.

On May 9, 2024, singers Vafa Ahmadpour, also known as Vafadar, and Danial Moghaddam were arrested by security forces in Shiraz and taken to an undisclosed location.

The news of their arrest was announced via Ahmadpour’s social media.

The singers had recently released a music video titled “Amadeh Bash” (Be Ready!). The reasons for their arrests, their current whereabouts, and the specific charges against them have not been disclosed.

Previously, on February 4, 2024, Ahmadpour was arrested at his home and detained for over 15 days before being released on bail from Evin Prison. He was later sentenced to one year for “spreading propaganda against the regime” by the Revolutionary Court. Moghaddam has also experienced previous arrests and legal challenges related to his protest songs.

Vafa Ahmadpour, also known as Vafadar, has been sentenced to one year in prison by the Revolutionary Court.

Ahmadpour announced the conviction on social media, stating that he was found guilty of “spreading propaganda against the regime.” His case has been handed over to the judgment enforcement unit.

Ahmadpour’s trial took place on April 14, 2024.

In late March of this year, Ahmadpour was arraigned at the Evin Courthouse for “propaganda against the regime,” “disseminating false information,” and “disturbing public opinion.” The court dismissed the charge of “assembly and collusion against national security” due to insufficient evidence.

He was arrested on February 4, 2024, by security forces at his residence and detained for over 15 days before being released on bail from Evin Prison.

During his detention, PEN America issued a statement condemning Ahmadpour’s arrest and called for his immediate release.
