Appeals Court Upholds 2-Year Prison Sentence for Environmental Activist Arman Shadivand

HRANA News Agency – The Ilam Province Court of Appeals has fully upheld the prison sentence of Arman Shadivand, an environmental activist from Darreh Shahr.

On May 19, 2025, Branch 9 of the appellate court issued the ruling and formally notified Mr. Shadivand. The court sentenced him to 8 months in prison for “propaganda against the regime” and 16 months for “insulting the Supreme Leader.”

Earlier, in February 2025, Branch 2 of the Ilam Revolutionary Court had handed down the same 24-month prison sentence on those charges.

The Darreh Shahr Prosecutor’s Office issued an indictment in Mr. Shadivand’s case and split the file between the Revolutionary and Criminal Courts. Authorities issued two separate court summonses, and Mr. Shadivand attended one of the sessions.

In November 2024, Branch 2 of the Darreh Shahr Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office summoned Mr. Shadivand. Security forces arrested him after he appeared in court, but released him the next day on bail from Mahpareh Prison in Darreh Shahr.

In 2024, HRANA documented the arrest of 11 environmental activists, along with three summonses to security institutions, one house search, and one court trial.

Faraj Arsan Arrested by Security Forces

Faraj Arsan, a resident of Malekshahi in Ilam Province, was reportedly arrested by security forces in Ilam on April 3, 2024.

According to Kurdpa, Arsan was taken into custody without a warrant and transferred to an undisclosed location.

Sources cited in the report indicate that Arsan was apprehended at his residence, with his participation in a Nowruz celebration gathering noted. As of now, the location of his detention and the charges against him remain unknown.

Shahria Kurd Arrested in Abdanan

On February 20, 2023, security forces arrested Shahriar Kurd, a resident of Abdanan, and took him to an undisclosed location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kurdpa, on February 20, 2023, Shahriar Kurd was arrested by security forces at his home in Abdanan, Ilam Province.

The intelligence agents, reportedly, did not show any arrest warrant.
Kurd’s whereabouts and the allegation against him are still unknown.

 

Seven Individuals Arrested in Abdanan and Piranshahr

On October 20, 2022, security forces arrested a cleric, Zana Khoshaman and his wife, Sanoor Ghaderi, in Piranshahr, West Azerbaijan Province.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kurdpa, quoting Kurdpa, cleric Zana Khoshaman and his wife Sanoor Ghaderi were arrested in Piranshahr.

The security forces reportedly raided this couple’s house and arrested them without showing any arrest warrant.
 
In another report, five individuals identified as Esmail Bavir, Mohammad Zini Vand, Sattar Zeidi, Ali Soleimani and Mahmood Bazdar were arrested in Abdanan, Ilam Province. The reason for these arrests is still unknown.

 

HRANA’s Daily Review of Protests in Iran

On Saturday, September 3, and Sunday, September 4, 2022, at least six protests took place in Iran.

A group of employees of Zarneh Municipality, Ilam Province, gathered before the Governor’s office to protest against six months’ unpaid wages and 70 months’ unpaid premium.


In Bojnurd, a number of poultry sellers protested before the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad against the low retail profit margin, which has lowered to 2.5 per cent.

The workers of Kian Tire Manufacturing Company held a protest against unpaid wages and other issues. As a protest, they set fire to the tires.

A group of Fulad’s pensioners gathered before the pension funds of this company to protest against 18-month unpaid pensions and other issues.

A group of shopkeepers and tradesmen demonstrated before the Kish Free Zone Organization in protest against the privatization of Kish Airlines, shortage of flights and poor living conditions.

A group of spinal muscular atrophy patients (SMA) gathered before the office of the President to protest against the supply shortage of their medicines. Nine months after President’s promise to address their issues, these patients have not yet been provided with their required medicines.

HRANA’s Daily Review of Protests in Iran

On Monday, July 4, 2022, three protests and one labour strike took place in Iran.

In Dorud and Shushter, the pensioners of the Social Security Organization continued their protests against the insufficient annual pension increase. They chanted, ” They are lying that our enemy is America, our enemy is right here,” and “our wage in Rial, cost of living in Dollar.”

A group of minibus drivers in Bandar Abbas gathered in front of the governor-general building to protest against the recent decrease in fuel portions and crowded gas stations.

Last Sunday, the employees of the municipality of Zarneh, Ilam Province, went on strike to demand their unpaid wages and benefits.

Death Sentence Issued in Ilam

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Rokna News, Ilam province police commander Delavar al-Qasi-mehr announced the issuance of a sentence for a defendant in Darreh Shahr in Ilam Province.

The commander said that this man, who is accused of killing several of his relatives, a conscripted soldier, and a law enforcement officer in 2020, was sentenced to death three times over by the First Branch of the Criminal Court of Ilam Province.
