HRANA News Agency – Following the denial of delivering food to students in Zanjan University’s dormitory, just because of a delay of 4 minutes at 2pm on Thursday, a sit in started by two students and then it continued after a number of students joined them.

According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran (HRANA), heretofore the food distribution time and strict rules of university were protested by the majority of students, as the news of the sit-in in the Mountain self-service (old) in Zanjan University spread at the dinner time, the number of demanding students reached to more than forty people and the number of participants in the sit-in gradually increased.

Also the use of new policies to ration the university’s internet and the university services’ status could be considered as the reason of increasing number of students in the sit-in. University officials who were trying to lure the students, finally on Thursday afternoon, contacted the head of catering equipment, but as the negotiation failed, eventually the number of students increased to 70 people until 11pm,the  head of security and vice-chancellor of the university, who were present behind the self-service doors for hours, appeared among the students in sit-in by the students’ agreement.

The negotiations on the students’ demands to eliminate the price of forgotten vouchers which is 5000 IRR for each, and to refund the money of untaken food, to increase the time of service and modify the breakfast system continued and finally as the negotiation failed, students continued their sit-in and did not leave the self-service and sleep there till morning.

The sit-in is still going on and according to the decision of the committee of sit-in and students’ votes they will continue until achieving the demands. Earlier, many sit-ins and protests had happened by the students at this university regarding the authorities’ neglect and the weak position in the gas poisoning incident at the girls’ dormitory is the most famous of these events.

Subsequently, the upcoming news will be announced through the Information Committee of the students of Zanjan University in the sit-it.
