Release of Karim Chaichian; Continued detention and hunger strike of Mehdi Kokhian

HRANA News Agency – Karim Chaichian was released from Maragheh prison. Mehdi Kokhian, other detainee of this case, is still held in this prison. These two prisoners had gone on hunger strike by sewing their lips, after being transferred to the prison. Mehdi Kokhian is still on hunger strike.
According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran (HRANA), Karim Chaichian, one of the detainees of “News of Malekan” Telgeram channel case, was released from Maragheh prison, on Sunday December 25.
Karim Chaichian was released from prison while he had gone on hunger strike along with Mehdi Kokhian, by sewing their lips, after being transferred from the Intelligence office of police forces in Malekan to Maragheh prison. Mr. Chaichan was transferred to Farabi hospitan first, due to his inappropriate health condition, and then he was released.
Mehdi Kokhian and Karim Chaichian were arrested at their houses by security forces of Malekan, on December 19, 2016. The officers searched their houses and attempted to seize these two civilians’ personal electronics and communication belongings.
According to close friends of Mehdi Kokhian and Karim Chaichian, bails had been issued for both of them but they refused the bail emphasizing on their innocence.
Mehdi Kokhian and Karim Chaichian had gone on hunger strike since they were transferred from Malekan Police to Maragheh prison on December 21, 2016.
According to the relatives of Mehdi Kokhian and Karim Chaichian, the main reason for their arrests is their activities on a Telegram channel, called “City of News of Malakan”.
“City of News of Malakan” is a channel with more than 12,500 followers that covers the problems of the city.
