Complementary Report Regarding Massacre of Prisoners in GhezelHesar Prison and The Latest on Conditions inside This Prison

HRANA News: Following the incidents in Ghezel Hesar Prison located in Karaj, leaving hundreds of prisoners dead or injured by Special Security Forces, there are reports of emergency conditions inside prison and increasing casualty within prisoners.

According to HRANA, Human Rights Activists News Agency, since yesterday morning in addition to disconnection of Ghezel Hesar prison’s phone lines, families of prisoner who were supposed to meet their inmates, have not yet had the permission to do so. In addition, even the daily leave of prison personnel has been cancelled and no information including such as identities of those killed and injured inside prison is not being released by prison authorities.

As already mentioned above prison authorities have not announced the names of those killed, meanwhile some unconfirmed reports suggest that some bodies are secretly being transferred out of the prison in which case there is a strong possibility that the security officials may make an attempt to bury them arbitrary.

Also today, since 8 o’clock a.m. till 1:00 p.m. local time, about three hundred families of prisoners of Ghezel Hesar Prison have been gathering in front of the prison of which, despite not receiving any response from prison officials in this matter; many have not left the prison until hours after.

There is such an extensive effort to protect this prison and its security system and to prevent publishing of any reports in connection with prison riots and mass killings of prisoners so that, despite the number of injured in the incident and  some are in serious condition, prison authorities have refused to transfer them to any hospitals  and have attempt to send those with severe injuries to a clinic in another prison called “Rajai Shahr Prison” in the same city which is equipped with operating rooms. Witnesses have reported that two of those injured transferred to Rajai Shahr Prison have died due to severe injuries and lack of medical services.

There are reports that in March 24th clashes inside Karaj Ghezel Hesar Prison which began by some of prisoners protesting against the execution of dozens of other prisoners, 150 people suffered serious injuries, especially as the prison guards were using real bullets against prisoners, of which 80 people were killed or are in very serious conditions. Also many prisoners have suffered other injuries such as broken limbs or simpler wounds and breathing difficulties caused by fire as well as exposure to tear gas. Moreover, there is no information about fate of a number of prisoners. Sources close to the government have announced that 47 people have been killed or injured in this incident yet this number is dramatically different from what similar reports from independent sources indicate.

It is necessary to mention that according to head of “Prisons Organization”, Ghezel Hesar Prison with 20 thousands inmates of which about 13 thousand prisoners convicted of drug related charges, is the largest state prison and its main problem, as he states, is that it is housing “300 percent” more inmates than its capacity.
