HRANA News Agency – The Department of Statistics and Publications of the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRAI) has published the following monthly report for the Iranian calendar Month of Azar (21st Nov-20th Dec) on the human rights situation in Iran. This report cannot perfectly and comprehensively reflect the details of human rights concerns in Iran for obvious reasons including the existing governmental limitations and ban on the free exchange of information.
It should be noted that in addition to the monthly reports, the Department of Statistics and Publication of the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRAI) publishes a comprehensive and analytical annual report at the end of each calendar year.
An Analytical Overview on the Human Rights Situation in Iran for Azar 1395 Iranian Calendar (21 Nov – 20 Dec 2016 Gregorian calendar)
In Azar 1935 (Iranian Calendar), The systematic violation of human rights in Iran continued with 37 executions in the provinces of Alborz, West Azerbaijan, East Azerbaijan, Khorasan Razavi, Sistan and Baluchestan, Fars, Kermanshah, Gilan, Markazi and Hormozgan.
Unfortunately there has been significant number of executions in Azar. Some of the most noted reports regarding the execution of prisoners in this month includes execution of 10 prisoners in Rajai Shahr Prison (Gohardasht Prison), execution of at least 6 prisoners at Central Prison of Karaj.
Despite all the executions, we have witnessed some cases of pardoning of convicts and exonerations from execution.
Religious and Ethnic Minorities
The violations of the religious and ethnic minorities’ rights continued in this month. The most notable cases were the security forces arrest of a citizen of Marivan providence, and the arrest of two citizens in the City of Khoy.
In connection to the violation of the rights of the Christian Citizens; several discriminations and persecutions continue as before. For instance, the revolutionary court seized Christian Center, The Garden of Sharon, accusing Christians of Espionage.
In connection to the violation of the rights of the Sunni Citizens; among many reports, the report of arrest, threatening and beating of a Sunni cleric Student in the City of Sarbaz, and also the transfer of Molavi Nour-aldin Kashani’s case to the special cleric court, were highlighted.
The following are of the most notable reports, among the reports concerning children’s rights: the injury to the knee of a student after being physically punished to 300 squats. There are 60 newborns being left abandoned in Mashhad alone per month. The statistics show an increase of 10 thousand child marriages in Iran. 7 thousand children are deprived of education in Khuzestan.
Despite all the slogans of the gender equality the government did not take any steps forward in the direction towards gender equality in the month of Azar, and the rights of Iranian women continued to be violated. Following are some of the most important reports in regards to violation of women’s rights in the month of Azar: Alieh Motalebzadeh, women’s rights activist was arrested. Women’s Basij leader demands prosecution of women’s rights activists. A father murdered his own daughter for “honor”.
There has been many reports in regards to violations of Worker’s rights in Azar 1395 (Iranian Calendar). The following are few examples of these violations: 500 workers were fired from petrochemical plants of Bushehr due to workers’ union protests. 55% increase in the workers death in Fars province. Pars khodro workers protest and the labor activist from this factory still in detention.
There has been 9 reports of worker’s death during work, in this month.
Among the reports regarding unions and union rights, the following were highlighted: a street vendor shocked with Taser. Workers of three different companies/organizations gathered and protested.
Health and Environment
In the field of health and environmental protection, there were numerous reports mainly involving draught and air pollution. Following are of the most noteworthy reports in this regard: 12 out of 14 wetlands of the Fars province have dried up. Annually 64000 Iranians die of smoking. The Haze concentration in Bandar Abbas Reached Dangerous levels.
The most highlighted reports of the month
In this section of the monthly report, the most controversial and publicly sensitive cases of violations of human rights are highlighted. The special attention given to following reports does not indicate that the content of these reports are of greater violation of human rights.
The following are the most highlighted reports of the month: the Arrest of Alieh Motaleb zade, women’s rights activist. 12 out of 14 wetlands of the Fars province have dried up/Ghare gheshlagh Wetland is drying up. Qom’s salt lake in a crisis. For the second consecutive day Mashhad air pollution was announced dangerous. Garbage leaks to Caspian Sea. A comprehensive look on Child abuse in Iranian soccer. The second performance of the band “Ava-ye Moj” was cancelled by the officials.
The least underlined human rights violations
Unlike the reports mentioned in the previous section, many human rights’ reports received little or no attention from social media, bloggers, Internet activists, who are considered key contributors of the public opinion. It should be note that this unintentional or intentional negligence has resulted in continuation and further spread of human rights violations in Iran.
The first on this list that receive little public reaction was the execution of a man in Maraghe Prison. The following also received little attention from the public: arrest, threatening and beating of a Sunni cleric Student in the City of Sarbaz.
