Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani Gives Coerced Televised Confession

HRANA- Last night, Iran State Television broadcasted an interview with Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who is under imminent risk of being stoned to death. In that interview she “confesses” to adultery and the murder of her husband. She also criticized her lawyer Mohammad Mostafaei for publicizing her case.

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani’s appearance on television last night comes after a temporary stay in her stoning sentence and during a time when her case is surrounded in uncertainty.

Javid Kian, the lawyer for four women sentenced to be stoned to death in Tabriz, has called on the international community to take measures that will save the lives of Sakineh Mohammadi, Maryam Ghorbanzadeh, Kobra Babaei, and Azar Bagheri.

Javid Kian, who represented Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani together with Mohammad Mostafaei, said in an interview with Rooz that his client’s sons have been under extreme pressure and that the video was obtained after beating and pressuring the imprisoned woman. Mohammad Mostafei responded to video by telling Rooz that the judiciary should know that it cannot justify its behavior through violence, pressure, coercion, and staged scenes.

Javid Kian stated that he has received reports that his client was taken to room 37 in Tabriz Prison to make her coerced confessions after being severely beaten. Javid Kian has learned from other clients in the women’s prison in Tabriz that Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani was severely beaten and forced into making the televised interview.
