Civil Rights Activist Peyman Sokooti’s Six-Year, Nine-Month Sentence Upheld

The Gilan Court of Appeals upheld the initial sentence against civil rights activist Peyman Sokooti.

The Rasht Revolutionary Court had previously found Sokooti guilty on multiple charges, including “propaganda against the regime,” “assembly and collusion against national security,” and “membership in anti-regime groups,” leading to the lengthy sentence.

As per Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, he is expected to serve three years and six months of the imposed sentence.

Sokooti’s legal ordeal began on May 23, 2022, when security forces arrested him. Following his arrest, he was held in an IRGC detention facility for ten days before being transferred to Lakan Prison in Rasht.

 

Civil Rights Activist Peyman Sokooti Still in Detention  

Gilaki civil rights activist Peyman Sokooti has been detained for the past three months in Lakan Prison, awaiting due process while he is denied access to a lawyer.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, civil rights activist from Gilan Province Peyman Sokooti has been detained for three months.

Sokooti has been charged with “acting against national security through membership in anti-regime groups, insulting the Supreme Leader and propaganda against the regime”.

On May 23, 2022, security forces arrested Sokooti, held him for ten days in an IRGC detention facility, and then transferred him to Lakan Prison in Rasht.

Gilaki Civil Rights Activist Peyman Sokooti Arrested

On Monday, May 23, 2022, security forces arrested Gilaki civil rights activist Peyman Sokooti. The agents searched his house and confiscated some of his personal belongings including his cell phone and laptop.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, On Monday, May 23, 2022, Gilaki civil activist Peyman Sokooti was arrested in Kuchesfahan City in Gilan Province.

The reason for his arrest and his whereabouts are still unknown.
