Yashar Tabrizi Sentenced to Over 5 Years in Prison

Civil rights activist Yashar Tabrizi has been sentenced to five years and eight months in prison by Branch 2 of the Tabriz Revolutionary Court.

Branch 2 of the Tabriz Revolutionary Court sentenced Mr. Tabrizi to three years and seven months in prison for disrupting national security through supporting the Zionist regime. He was also sentenced to one year and five months for insulting the Supreme Leader, and eight months for propaganda against the regime.

Another part of Mr. Tabrizi’s case, concerning the charge of insulting religious sanctities, has been referred to Branch 2 of the Tabriz Criminal Court for further proceedings.

Mr. Tabrizi was released from Tabriz Prison on bail in February 2025. He had been arrested on November 19, 2024, after appearing at the Intelligence Department of the IRGC in Tabriz.

In September 2024, Yashar Tabrizi was also sentenced by the Shahriar Revolutionary Court to one year in prison for propaganda against the regime in connection with another case.

Akbar Gholizadeh (known as Yashar Tabrizi), the civil activist, has previously faced arrest and judicial actions due to his activities.

Appeals Court Upholds Prison Sentence for Mohammad Habibi

Branch 36 of the Tehran Court of Appeals upheld the six-month and one-day prison sentence of Mohammad Habibi, spokesperson for the Teachers’ Union, leaving the original verdict unchanged.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists in Iran, the court reaffirmed Habibi’s sentence, which had been issued by Branch 2 of the Shahriar Revolutionary Court. He was convicted on charges of “propaganda against the regime.”

Habibi’s defense attorney, Ramin Safarnia, stated: “Branch 36 of the Tehran Court of Appeals rejected our appeal and confirmed the sentence of my client, Mohammad Habibi, handed down by Branch 2 of the Shahriar Revolutionary Court for propaganda against the regime.”

The initial trial for this case took place on June 29, 2023.

On April 5, 2023, Habibi was arrested at his workplace in Tehran by security agents due to his protest posts regarding the serial poisoning attacks on schools across the country. He was eventually released on May 20 of the same year from Ward 209 of Evin Prison after posting bail.

It is worth noting that this spokesperson for the Teachers’ Trade Association was previously arrested by security forces in Tehran on April 30, 2022, ahead of Teacher Appreciation Week in Iran and a protest gathering of educators. He was released from Evin Prison on February 8 of the following year.

In October 2022, he was sentenced by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court to three years and seven months in prison for “assembly and collusion against national security,” one year for “propaganda against the regime,” a two-year ban on activities and membership in groups, and a travel ban.

Habibi has a history of arrests and convictions due to his activities.

Three Workers’ Rights Activists Face Trial

HRANA News Agency-Branch 2 of the Shahriar Revolutionary Court held the court hearing addressing charges against three workers’ rights activists, Mohammad Iran-Nejad, Morteza Seydi and Nasrolllah Amirlou.

The defendants, who were represented by their attorneys including Erfan Karam Veisi, faced charges of “forming a workers’ association to act against national security.” The outcome of the trial remains to be seen.

The trio had previously been summoned to court on August 21, 2022, to present their final defense.

On June 26, 2022, Iran-Nejad was imprisoned to serve his sentence received for his previous legal case. He was released from Rajaj Shahr Prison on February 20, 2023.

Amirlou and Seydi were arrested on April 15, 2022, and later transferred from a detention facility in Tehran to Ward 209 of Evin Prison. They were granted bail and released from Evin Prison on May 2 and 9, 2022, respectively.
