Abbas Lesani Sentenced to One Year Imprisonment

HRANA News Agency – Abbas Lesani, cultural activist from Ardebil, was sentenced to one year imprisonment.
According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran (HRANA), branch 1 of the Ardabil Revolutionary Court on 25th March, informed this civil activist of his one year imprisonment sentence.
Mr. Lesani, in this regard, told HRANA’s reporter: “The branch of the court of Appeal has not been determined yet, nevertheless, I have published my defence in a public complaint and I hope it has a positive impact.”
He was arrested in a protest related to the drying up of Urmia Lake, in 2011, on charges of propaganda against the regime and forming a group for the purpose of disturbing the National security, and when he was released, he refused to attend the trial because the trial was not open to public, and he demanded in a letter the implementation of Article 168 of the Constitution regarding the need of holding open courts.
Abbas Lesani, on a part of the letter has written: “I insist on my legal rights as a citizen, and I expect you, Honor Judge of the case, as a representatives or part of the judiciary system, to follow the clear emphasis in the constitution, especially Article 168 and at least in this case, ensure your impartiality, commitment to rule of law, justice and your and your organization’s independence.”
