Baha’i Citizen, Riyaz Sobhani, Arrested

HRANA News Agency – Riyaz Sobhani, a Baha’i citizen residing in Tehran, was arrested this morning in his house.

According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), security forces entered Riyaz Sobhani’s house on June 15, 2011 at 6:30am without a warrant and arrested him without showing cause.

Riyaz Sobhani is the father of Jinoos Sobhani who was the former secretary at the Defenders of Human Rights Center.She was arrested once in 2008 and then again in 2009.

Artin Ghazanfari is Jinoos Sobhani’s husband who is currently locked up in Evin Prison, serving his one year sentence.After the events following Ashura protests which occurred on December 27, 2009, Artin Ghazanfari together with his wife and other Baha’i citizens were arrested in the same month.

Intensified Security Environment in the Villages Surrounding Shahu Mountain

HRANA- Over the last week the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp has cut off mobile and telephone services to the villages surrounding Shahu Mountain along the roads leading to Kamyaran and Marivan.

Officials have not responded to protests by the citizens of the villages who are asking for the reasons behind the restrictions. Last year, the Revolutionary Guard cut off telephone services to these villages causing hardship for its citizens.

Arash Sadeghi Sentenced to More Prison Time and Flogging

HRANA- Arash Sadeghi, a political activist and student was sentenced to six years in prison and seventy-four lashings.

Arash Sadeghi attended Alameh Tabatabai University where he was a member of the Participation Front. He was sentenced by the 26th branch of the Revolutionary Court for charges of spreading anti-government propaganda and colluding against the government.

Rights groups call for end to anti-drugs aid for Iran due to rise of executions

HRANA News Agency – UNITED NATIONS; Two leading rights groups on Tuesday called for an end to international cash and technical assistance to Iran’s anti-drug campaign, which they said was bolstering a rise in executions.

In 2010 and 2011, Iran executed more than 1,000 drug offenders, more than triple the number in the previous two years, according to Harm Reduction International, a narcotics lobbying group which issued the call with Human Rights Watch.

Social Activists Beaten in Tabriz Prison

HRANA News Agency – A number of social activists have been beaten and battered by Iranian security forces in Tabriz Prison.These individuals were arrested in recent weeks following demonstrations to save Lake Urmia.

According to a report by Daneshjoo News, 110 activists have been arrested following protests against Iranian government policies towards Lake Urmia.These detainees are in poor physical condition and have been transferred to the quarantine ward of Tabriz Prison due to lack of space in detention centers.Latest reports indicate that a number of social activists have been beaten and battered by security forces in prison.Those beaten are activists who were arrested on August 24, 2011 in Tabriz while they broke their fast during Ramadan with an evening meal called Iftar.

Currently, 110 social activists are kept behind bars in the quarantine ward of Tabriz Prison under substandard, inhuman conditions.

Ghader Norouzi, Vahid Ali Mardai and Farzad Mahdavi have been severely injured during these beatings, and concerns have been raised about their wellbeing.In response to a complaint filed by these social activists against security agents responsible for the beatings, all three of them have been transferred to the Intelligence Agency’s detention center where no news of them may be obtained.

Ghader Norouzi, Vahid Ali Mardai and Farzad Mahdavi together with 26 other social activists from Azerbaijan were arrested on August 24, 2011 in Tabriz during an Iftar gathering.

Three Kurds Were Sentenced to Fifteen Years in Prison

HRANA News Agency – The Revolutionary Court has sentenced three Sunni Kurds to fifteen years in prison.

According to a report by Mukrian News Agency, Abdullah Khosrow-Zadeh, Hessam Mohammadi and Hayman Mahmoud Takhti have each been sentenced to five years in prison on charges of cooperating with religious organizations.These three prisoners were arrested 20 months ago and have been locked up in Rajai-Shahr Prison since then.

Balouchi Youth Faces Imminent Risk of Execution

HRANA- A Balouchi youth who was kidnapped by agents of the Ministry of Intelligence seven months ago is at risk of being executed.
Mohammad Saber Malek Raisi, who is fifteen and hails from Sarbaz, is accused of working with an anti-government organization.  Intelligence agents have been putting pressure on Mohammad Saber Malek Raisi in an effort to force him to confess to working with the anti-government organization Jundallah.  The intelligence agents have contacted Mohammad’s family informing them of plans to execute him if they are not told of his older brother’s whereabouts.  Mohammad Saber Malek Raisi’s older brother is a member of the Jundallah organization.

Mass Execution of 22 Prisoners in Evin

HRANA News Agency – On Tuesday, January 3, 2012, twenty two prisoners were hanged in Evin on drug related charges.  These prisoners were transferred from Ghazal Hesar Prison on Saturday and Sunday and locked up in solitary confinement in Evin Prison in preparation for the executions.

According to a report published on the website of Human Rights and Democracy Activists in Iran, the following individuals are some of the prisoners known to have been hanged yesterday:

 

  1. Gholam Reza Farogh Zehe – 28 years old, an Afghani citizen
  2. Ali Reza Javid Shirazi – 38 years old, in prison for nearly 20 months in Ghazal Hesar
  3. Aziz Shekari – 24 years old, in prison for nearly 20 months in Ghazal Hesar, sentenced to death for possessing 20 grams of narcotics.
  4. Mohsen Kakavand – 32 years old, in prison for nearly 2 years in Ghazal Hesar
  5. Hassan Panahi – 45 years old, in prison for 2 years
  6. Mahmoud Kermani
  7. Yadollah Mohammadi – 40 years old, in prison for nearly 3 years
  8. Abdolraof Brohi – 40 years old, in prison for 3 years
  9. Asghar Shiek Sotodeh
  10. Abdolhamid Dahmordeh
  11. Saeed Reza Zadeh – 26 years old, in prison for nearly 15 months
  12. Mohammad Darvishi – 27 years old, in prison for 3 years


According to this report, the families of those executed went to Evin Prison today in order to pick up their loved ones’ bodies but were referred to Kahrizak morgue where the corpses are being kept.
