Seyed Ali Mousavi Arrested in Gorgan

On January 22, 2023, security forces arrested Seyed Ali Mousavi, a graduate of the Sharif University of Technology, in Gorgan, Golestan Province. The agents took him to an undisclosed location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on January 22, 2023, quoting the Iranian Students’ union, Seyed Ali Mousavi was arrested by security forces in Gorgan.

The reasons for this arrest, his whereabouts and the allegation are still unknown.

Physician Reza Rezazadeh Sentenced to Six Months Imprisonment

The Tabriz Revolutionary Court sentenced physician Reza Rezazadeh Parparani to six months in prison and banned him from leaving the country for two years.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Reza Rezazadeh Parparani was sentenced to imprisonment.

The charges against Rezazadeh are still unknown.

On December 7, 2022, Rezazadeh was arrested after an appearance at the Public and Revolutionary Courthouse in Tabriz. After a while, he was released on bail.

Four Inmates Executed in Karaj and Khalkhal

On January 26, 2023, three inmates convicted of drug-related crimes were executed in the Central Prison of Karaj. Also, on January 25, one inmate sentenced to death for accessory to murder was executed in Khalkhal Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on January 26, 2023, three death-row prisoners were executed in the Central Prison of Karaj.

HRANA has identified two of them as Reza Shokri and Omid Shokri. They were previously convicted of drug offences.

Also, Iran Human Rights Organization reported the execution of an inmate identified as Hamed Heidari in Khalkhal Prison on January 25.

None of the official sources and media outlets inside the country has reported these executions at the time of writing.

In 2022, the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists in Iran registered 457 reports related to the death penalty. This included 92 death sentences, including the conviction of 6 people to public execution and 565 execution sentences were carried out, 2 of which have been carried out in public. Based on the announced identifications of some of the executed individuals, 501 were male and 11 were female. In addition, 5 juvenile offenders were executed in 2022, meaning they were under the age of 18 at the time they committed the crime.

 

 

Maryam Derisi Sentenced to over 22 Months in Prison

Maryam Derisi, a Master’s student at the University of Saveh, was sentenced to 22 months and 17 days in prison. Based on Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, 15 months for one count will be enforceable.

According to this verdict issued by the Fars Court of Appeals, Derisi received 15 months and one day for “insulting the Supreme Leader of Iran” and seven months and 16 days for “propaganda against the regime.”

Earlier also, the Kazerun Revolutionary Court sentenced Derisi to one year and 74 lashes for one case and three years for another legal case.
On October 15, 2022, security forces arrested Derisi in Shiraz and jailed her in Adel-Abad Prison. On November 2, she was released on bail.

Arash Sadeghi Sentenced to Five Years and Eight Months in Prison

The Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced former political prisoner Arash Sadeghi to five years and eight months in prison. Sadeghi was arrested amid nationwide protests.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Arash Sadeghi was sentenced to five years and eight months imprisonment.

Sadeghi’s lawyer, Ramin Safarnia, announced: “My client was sentenced to five years for ‘assembly and collusion against national security,’ and eight months for ‘propaganda against the regime.’ He was also banned from leaving the country, travelling to Tehran and the Northern provinces for two years. He was also prohibited from membership in social/political parties and groups for two years, and the seizure of some of his belongings.”

On October 12, 2022, security forces arrested Sadeghi and detained him in Ward 209 of Evin Prison. On January 21, 2023, he was released on bail.

Sadeghi faced other arrests and convictions on prior occasions.

Iran Protests: Aram Gohari Arrested for Second Time

Security forces arrested Aram Gohari again in Miandoab and took him to an undisclosed location. He was previously detained in Urmia amid nationwide protests.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, former political prisoner Aram Gohari was arrested in Miandoab, West Azerbaijan Province.
An informed source told HRANA that Gohari wanted to give a speech at the commemoration ceremony of one of the killed protestors.
On June 12, 2022, Gohari was released on probation.
His whereabouts and conditions are still unknown.

Since the beginning of nationwide protests, about 19570 people, including journalists, artists, lawyers, teachers, students and civil rights activists, have been arrested. So far, over protests, about 742 people have been sentenced to a total of 12634 months imprisonment.

 

Three Inmates Executed in Arak Prison

On January 24, 2023, Arak Prison officials executed three death-row inmates convicted of drug-related crimes.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on January 24, 2023, three death-row prisoners were executed in Arak Prison. HRANA has identified two of them as Omid Azni and Behnam (last name unknown).

These prisoners were previously sentenced to death for drug offences.

Baha’i Citizen Sepehr Ziaei Sentenced to Five Years in Prison

The Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced jailed Baha’i citizen Sepehr Ziaei to five years and banned him from leaving the country for two years. The court also ordered the seizure of some of his belongings.

According to this verdict, Ziaei was sentenced to five years for “membership in illegal groups to disrupt national security.” As additional punishment, he was banned from leaving the country for two years, and his cell phone and laptops were seized.

On September 24, 2022, security forces arrested Ziaei at his home in Tehran and jailed him in Ward 209 of Evin Prison. The agents also searched his house and confiscated some of his belonging.

An informed source told HRANA that “last year, Ziaei started his treatment after an ear stroke. However, this arrest interrupted his treatment, and now he has lost a major part of his hearing power.”

According to the HRANA Annual Statistical Report of Human Rights Conditions in Iran, in 2022, 64% of the entire reports on the violation of religious minorities’ rights are about harassment, prosecution and conviction against Baha’is.

According to unofficial sources, it is estimated that more than 300,000 Baha’is live in Iran, but the Iranian Constitution recognizes only Islam as the official religion, in addition to Christianity, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism. Bahai faith is not considered legitimate by the authorities, and the rights of Baha’is in Iran have been systematically violated for years.

Iran Protests: Mehdi Dadgar Sentenced to over Four Years in Prison

The Criminal Court of Abhar sentenced Mehdi Dadgar, arrested during nationwide protests, to four years and three months and 16 days in prison.

According to this verdict, Dadgar received three years for “insulting the Prophet of Islam” and 15 months and 16 days for “spreading falsehood to disturb public opinions.”
Earlier, for another part of his legal case, he had been sentenced to 15 months for “insulting the former and current Supreme Leader of Iran” and 8 months for “propaganda against the regime.”

If the verdict is upheld on appeal, based on Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, three years in prison for the first count will be enforceable.

On September 22, 2022, he and his sister, Samaneh Dadgar, were arrested at protests and jailed in Abhar and Safar Abad Prisons, respectively. After a while, they were released on bail.

Since the beginning of nationwide protests, at least19571 people, including journalists, artists, lawyers, teachers, students and civil rights activists, have been arrested. So far, over protests, about 738 people have been sentenced to a total of 12342 months imprisonment.

 

 

Iran Protests: Amir Sheibani Zaveh Sentenced to over Eight Years in Prison

The Mashhad Revolutionary Court sentenced Amir Sheibani Zaveh, arrested during nationwide protests, to eight years and six months imprisonment.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, protestor Amir Sheibani Zaveh was sentenced to imprisonment.

Sheibani received four years and six months for “assembly and collusion against the regime,” three years for “membership in anti-regime groups,” and one year for “propaganda against the regime.”

If the verdict is upheld on appeal, based on Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, four years and six months for the first count will be enforceable.

According to Sheibani, “publishing the calls for protests, the pictures of Mahsa Amini and Nika Shakarmi’s burial place on social media, and attending one of the killed protestors’ funeral in Mashhad” was presented in the court as pieces of evidence for the charges.

Since the beginning of nationwide protests, about 19570 people, including journalists, artists, lawyers, teachers, students and civil rights activists, have been arrested. So far, over protests, about 737 people have been sentenced to a total of about 12330 months imprisonment.
