A Worker Dies in Kermanshah

HRANA News Agency – Faramarz Alizadeh who was a contract worker in Kermanshah’s flour factory died in hospital from injuries caused by the collapse of an elevator.

 

According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), Faramarz Alizadeh, son of Abbas, was married with five children and lived in Kandoleh Javanrud, [a city in Kermanshah Province].  Two week ago, he was severely injured after the collapse of an elevator from the third floor at the flour factory where he worked.

 

Faramarz Alizadeh was transferred to Kermanshah’s Taleghani Hospital and died there on the evening of May 8, 2011 due to the extent of his injuries.  He was not covered by any health insurance plans because he had a temporary work contract.

 

The death of this worker occurs while health care providers at the hospital were negligent and failed to provide the proper care for Faramarz Alizaadeh simply because he had no health insurance and unable to pay for the expenses himself.

 

Located at Vakil Agha region in Kermanshah, the flour factory has many workers hired under temporary contracts.

 

 

 

 

Sarah Tavassoli Sentenced to Six Years in Prison and 74 Lashes

HRANA – Dr. Sara Tavassoli was sentenced to six years in prison and 74 lashes for attending Ashura rallies on December 27, 2009, and issuing a statement of sympathy to the Moussavi family.
According to the verdict issued by Branch 26 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court, with Judge Abbas Pirabbasi presiding, Dr. Sarah Tavassoli has been convicted for her brief appearance in the Ashura demonstrations and also for her presence in the Moussavi household and expressing her condolences for the shooting death of their nephew.
According to Mizan News, Dr. Tavassoli was arrested shortly after the rallies of December 27, 2009, amid post-election protests in Iran.  She was subsequently detained in Section 209 of Evin Prison for 50 days.
Dr. Sarah Tavassoli is a university professor and a faculty member at a prominent university.  She is the daughter of Mohammad Tavassoli, the Chief of Political Bureau and a member of the Central Council of the Freedom Movement of Iran.
Dr. Tavassoli’s husband, Mr. Farid Taheri, was also arrested in the aftermath of Ashura protests and continues to be held under temporary arrest in Section 350 of Evin prison.
According to the sentence issued by Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court, Dr. Tavassoli has been sentenced to six years in prison and 74 lashes on charges of “illegal assembly and conspiracy to commit crimes against national security” and “disturbing public order.”

HRANA – Islamic Revolutionary Court (Branch 26) has sentenced Shadi Sadr to six years in jail and 74 lashes and Mahbubeh Abbas-Gholizadeh to two-and-a-half years in jail and 30 lashes for acting against national security, harming public order, and resisting arrest.

Three prisoners hanged in Zahedan prison, Iran

HRANA News Agency – This morning, three prisoners (one Pakistani citizen) convicted of drug trafficking were hanged in Zahedan prison.

According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), three prisoners, convicted of drug trafficking were executed in Zahedan central prison on Saturday, December 8, 2012.

Abolfazl Abedini returned to Evin Prison after outcry

HRANA News Agency – Abolfazl Abedini, an Iranian political prisoner who was exiled to Ahvaz Prison last week, has reportedly been returned to Evin Prison.
According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), Journalist Abolfazl Abedini, who has testified regarding signs of torture on the body of Sattar Beheshti in an investigation into the death of the jailed blogger while in custody of cyber police, had been removed from Evin Prison and transferred to Ahvaz Prison in Southwest Iran.

Kurdish Activists Still Held in Solitary Confinement

HRANA News Agency – Although several months have passed since a number of Kurdish political and social activists and literary intellectuals have been arrested in different cities throughout Kurdistan, they are still behind bars held in a legal state of limbo in solitary confinement.

According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), the following individuals are locked up in isolation cells in the Intelligence Agency’s Detention Center (Maydan Naft) in Kermanshah since August 5, 2011 and are being pressured to confess to having connections with Kurdish parties:
 

  • Sajad Jahanfard, an author and a scholar and researcher
  • Farhad Vakili Nia
  • Ezad Aldin Heidari
  • Maziar Mohammadi


The following four other social activists and literary intellectuals who were arrested at the same time have been released on bail approximately equal to $50,000:

 

  • Maryam Amini
  • Naeem Najafi
  • Jamal Khani
  • Sina Bijanpour


Farzad Haghshenas is another Kurdish activist from the city of Marivan. He was arrested in front of his shop on May 11, 2011 and is still in solitary confinement in Intelligence Agency’s Detention Center. Although more than 3 months have passed, no charges have been filed against him.He has been allowed to see him mother and brother only for a few minutes during this time.

Sharif Bajour is a Kurdish environmentalist and a member of Management Council for Green Chya Forum in Marivan, Kurdistan Province.He was summoned to the Intelligence Agency’s office in Marivan and subsequently arrested on July 23, 2011 when he complied with the order.
Behrooz Darvand and Iraj Ghaderi were also arrested on July 23, 2011 by security forces in the city of Marivan.These three Kurdish environmentalists and members of Management Council for Green Chya Forum still remain in police custody.Behrooz Darvand and Iraj Ghaderi have been transferred from Intelligence Agency’s Detention Center to Marivan Prison.
 

Political Prisoner of 80’s, Mehdi Abedi Bakhoda, Arrested

HRANA News Agency – On Sunday, July 3, 2011, Iranian intelligence agents raided Mehdi Abedi Bakhoda’s house, took him out of his sickbed and placed him under arrest.The current whereabouts of this political prisoner from 80’s are unknown.

According to a report by Human Rights Activists for Democracy in Iran, on Sunday night, at about 11:00pm, Iranian intelligence agents climbed over the wall and entered Mehdi Abedi Bakhoda’s residence in the city of Rasht.At the time of the raid, he was ill with an IV attached to his arm.During the break-in, intelligence agents were violent and used force to make the arrest.

While Mehdi Abedi Bakhoda’s family members were objecting to the raid by chanting slogans, their neighbors joined the protest to prevent the arrest.However, fearing the growing number of protesters, the intelligence agents left the premises quickly.

During this raid, the intelligent agents confiscated a computer, a personal phone and address book, a mobile phone and a few other personal items.

Since the arrest, Mehdi Abedi Bakhoda’s family members visit Rasht’s court house and Revolutionary Court every day for information regarding his whereabouts and current condition.Thus far, the authorities have refused to give the family any answers.

 

Rejection and Expulsion for Smokers

HRANA News Agency – Marzieh Vahid-Dastjerdi, Iran’s Minister of Health and Medical Education, has said that college applicants who smoke will be rejected, and university students who smoke will be expelled.

 

According to a report by Fars News Agency, Marzieh Vahid-Dastjerdi has announced, “In the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, candidates who smoke won’t be selected, and in relation to college students, those who smoke will be expelled.”

 

According to this report, Marzieh Vahid-Dastjerdi has also said that laws to combat tobacco usage are approved and well established in the country, but government organizations tasked to oversee the enforcement of these laws must become more proactive and punish the offenders.

 

It appears as if this decision has been reached in order to place more restrictions on college students.

 

 

Mahboubeh Karami’s Prison Sentence Due to Begin

HRANA News Agency – On Sunday, May 15, 2011, Mahboubeh Karami was summoned to prison to begin serving her sentence.

 

According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), following a summon issued last week, Mahboubeh Karami must report to Evin prison within three days to begin serving her jail term.

 

Mahboubeh Karami has been charged with membership in the organization known as Human Rights Activists in Iran, propaganda against the regime, and “involvement and conspiracy with the intent to commit crimes against national security.”  Judge Movahed presiding over the appeals court, Branch 45, sentenced her to three years in prison.  In the lower court, Mahboubeh Karami was initially sentenced to four years in prison by Judge Peerabasi.

 

On March 2, 2010, Mahboubeh Karami was arrested in her house during a raid by the IRGC Intelligence Unit following an orchestrated conspiracy by Iran’s Intelligence Agency to build cases against human rights activists and particularly current and former members of the organization known as Human Rights Activists in Iran.

 

Mahboubeh Karami suffered physically and mentally during her incarceration but was eventually released on August 14, 2010, after posting a bail approximately equivalent to $500,000.

 

Currently, amongst other victims of this conspiracy still locked up in Evin prison are Abolfazel Abedini (sentenced to 12 years in prison), Mehdi Khodahi (sentenced to a total of 7 years in prison) and Laleh Hassanpour (sentenced to one year in prison and 4 years of suspended term).

 

Additionally, a number of other human rights activists including Nasour Naghipour who has been sentenced to 7 years in prison are waiting for the Appeals Courts to hear and review their cases.
