Women’s Rights Activist, Rahil Ashnagar, Arrested

HRANA News Agency – Rahil Ashnagar, blogger and women’s rights activist, was arrested by security agents in Bandar-e Anzali, [Gilan Province], on Tuesday, May 31, 2011.

According to a report by the website of Fair Family Law, security agents raided Rahil Ashnagar’s house and confiscated her personal belongings.She has been allowed to contact her family twice since she was detained.Rahil Ashnagar has been charged with acting against national security.

Rahil Ashnagar was first transferred to Anzali Prison and then taken to Lakan Prison in Rasht where she is currently locked up with the general prison population.

 

A Kurdish Woman in Salmas Dies of Self-Immolation

HRANA News Agency – Yesterday, a Kurdish woman named Tyran Mamedi Ghazl Kond committed suicide by setting herself on fire.

 

According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), Tyran Mamedi Ghazl Kond, daughter of Majid, was married and lived in Ashnak village in Salmas County [West Azerbaijan Province].  She died of serious injuries caused by self-immolation.  It has been reported that she committed suicide because of family problems and disputes.

 

It must be noted that lack of social and cultural infrastructures in disadvantaged and underprivileged parts of the country brings about such tragedies, and each year, numerous cases of suicide and self-immolation especially amongst women are reported from these regions.

 

A Woman Dies of Self-Immolation

HRANA News Agency – A young woman who had set herself on fire died in the hospital due to burns covering most of her body.

According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), on Sunday, April 24, 2011, in the Ghotour region of Khoy County [West Azarbaijan Province, Iran], a Kurdish woman named Falaknas Fedai set herself on fire because of family problems and pressures.

As a result of bodily injuries caused by critical burns, she succumbed to her wounds and died in the hospital.

Falaknas Fedai was twenty years old and is survived by her only child.

Another Honor-Killing: Young Man Burned Alive in Golestan Province

HRANA News Agency – Hamid Yaghmaei was brutally murdered in Gonbad-e-Kavus County by the relatives of a women with whom he allegedly had an improper relationship. Hamid Yaghmaei owned and operated a video club situated in a region referred to as Gardan Marzi.

According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), a woman’s relatives, suspicious of an inappropriate relationship between her and Hamid Yaghmaei, attacked his place of business, striking him with a dagger. The assailants fled the scene after pouring gasoline on him and setting his body ablaze.

No Impediments to Swift Action by Security Forces for “Bad Hejab”

HRANA- The Iranian interior minister explicitly declared that there will be no impediments in the way of security forces in dealing with “bad hejab”.

Hamid Rasai, member of parliament’s culture committee said, “In this week’s cultural committee meeting with the interior minister we discussed the issues of chastity and bad hejab.”

IRAN: Judiciary official says woman to be stoned for husband’s murder, not just adultery

In a surprise announcement, a judiciary official in provincial Iran said a woman who had been convicted and sentenced to stoning for adultery had also been convicted of murder.

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two in the Tabriz area, had been convicted of cheating on her late husband, apparently a murder victim, and sentenced to die by stoning, a ruling that is officially under review, according to Iranian judiciary officials.
