The Supreme Court Rejected Saeid Madani’s Appeal Request

HRANA News Agency – The Supreme Court rejected the request for reprocessing the case of political prisoner, Dr. Saeid Madani.
According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), after more than 6 months from referral of Dr. Saeid Madani’s case to branch number 34 of the Supreme Court, this court rejected the reprocessing of the case of this well-known sociologist and National-Religious activist.
According to the informed sources, due to defects existing in the case, under reprocessing the case, his sentence would be reduced considerably, but it is unknown why this request has been rejected.
These sources also stated that this incident increase the possibility of intervention of security authorities in his case, in order to avoid the reduction of the sentence.
Dr. Saeid Madani, sociologist and senior researcher of social science is serving his 4th year in Rajaei Shahr prison of Karaj, while he has sentenced been to a total of 9 years and 6 months in prison in two different cases. With accounting his previous arrests, he has served around 5 years of his sentence and by the law he is illegible to a parole.
Saeid Madani has PhD on criminology from Saturn Pacific University (USA). He was arrested last time in December 2011, and for one year was under interrogation in ward number 209; then he was transferred to ward 350 of Evin. He was sentenced to 6 years in prison in exile and 10 years mandatory residency in Bandar Abbas, in branch number 26 of the revolutionary court by judge Pirabbasi. This sentence did not have much reduction in court of appeal and changed to 6 years prison and 10 years mandatory residency in Bandar Abbas and he will have to serve 4 years in Bandar Abbas prison. He was transferred to Rajaei Shahr prison after the verdict had been finalized.
Membership and cooperation with Centre to Defend Human Rights in Iran, establishment and membership in the committee to investigate arbitrary arrests, establishment and membership in the committee to defend free and fair elections, establishment and membership in the National-Religious council, publishing critical articles, cooperation with coordination council of green way and advocacy of green movement by publishing papers are part of the activities because of which he was arrested.
Dr. Madani had been arrested two times before that. Once in 1994 for cooperating with Iran Farda publication with Ezzatollah Sahabi as director, and also in 2000, for foundation, cooperation and membership in National-Religious activist’s council.
The first detention of this activist was for his cooperation with Iran Farda and publishing a critical paper regarding Iran’s strategy on Iran-Iraq war. He called the continuation of the war after re-capturing Khoramshahr and other occupied grounds a mistake of the clergies and militarists, and was interrogated for two months in the solitary confinement of Tohid prison (former anti-terrorist committee).
Second time, he was arrested along with some others National-Religious activists in 2000 for political and journalistic activities and was released after one year. He was then kept in the solitary confinement for 6 months.
Following that case, judge Haddad (among perpetrators of Kahrizak) sentenced him to 6 years in prison and 10 years deprivation from social activities, which was reduced to 3 years and half in prison and 10 years deprivation from social activities in branch number 29 of the appeal court by judge Zargar.
According to these sentences, this sociologist has to serve 4 years in Bandar Abbas and after being released from prison will be exiled to Bandar Abbas for 10 years, meanwhile he is deprived of any social activities. However, according to the new penal code most of these sentences will not be executed.
Dr. Saeid Madani has published many papers and books as a criminologist, about addiction, violence against children and women and also children’s rights.
Besides, translating “Psychology of social change” and “Towards a comprehensive system of social welfare for Iran”, “Violence against children in Iran”, “Pathology of children’s rights in Iran”, “Addiction in Iran”, “A report on the social situation in Iran” are some of the books which he has published. A while ago his last book about “Prostitution in Iran” after nearly three years and after elimination of some parts received the approval of the ministry of culture and Islamic publication.
