A Prisoner Executed in Gonbad-e Kavus Prison

HRANA News Agency – On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the death sentence of a prisoner previously convicted of murder was carried out in Gonbad-e Kavus Prison.

HRANA has identified the individual as Behrouz Shirmohammadli, a 27-year-old Sunni Turkmen resident of Gonbad-e Kavus, Golestan Province.

According to information received by HRANA, Mr. Shirmohammadli was involved in a street fight in 2021 during which he committed murder and was subsequently arrested. He was eventually sentenced to death by a criminal court.

As of the time of this report, the execution has not been officially announced by prison authorities or relevant institutions.

In 2024, the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists in Iran documented 812 cases related to the right to life, including the sentencing of 214 individuals to death and the execution of 930 individuals. Among these, 4 executions were carried out in public. Of those executed, 818 were male, 26 were female, and 5 were juvenile offenders—individuals under 18 years old at the time of their alleged crimes.

Two Prisoners Executed in Gonbad-e Kavus Prison

At dawn on Tuesday, November 19, the death sentences of two prisoners previously convicted of murder were carried out in Gonbad-e Kavus Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of the Human Rights Activists in Iran, the identities of the prisoners executed on the morning of Tuesday were confirmed as Safa Hosseini from Gorgan and Soleiman Vaziri.

Both individuals had been arrested on murder charges and subsequently sentenced to death by judicial authorities.

As of the time of this report, the executions have not been publicly announced by prison officials or the responsible institutions.

According to the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists in Iran, in 2023, at least 767 citizens, including 21 women and 2 juvenile offenders, were executed. Of these, the executions of 7 individuals were carried out in public. Additionally, during this period, 172 others were sentenced to death, with 5 of them sentenced to public execution. It is worth noting that during the same period, the initial death sentences of 49 other individuals were also upheld by the Supreme Court.

Inmate Executed in Gonbad-e Kavus Prison

On November 15, 2023, Mehdi Bakhshandeh, an inmate convicted of assisting in the killing of Border Guard Captain Nabiallah Khatiri three years ago, was executed in Gonbad-e Kavus Prison.

As of the time of writing, no official statements from government sources or coverage by domestic media outlets within the country have been made regarding this execution.

According to data compiled by the Center of Statistics of Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA), between October 10, 2022, and October 8, 2023, a total of 659 individuals were executed by hanging in Iran, representing a 24% increase compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. HRANA News Agnecy – Gonbad-e Kavus Prison is one of the prisons often used by State Prison, Security and Corrective Measures Organisations to banish political or non-political prisoners. At the moment, this prison is home to 5 political prisoners whom are kept under the worst living condition.
