Student Samaneh Asghari Commences Prison Term at Evin Prison

Samaneh Asghari, a student at Kharazmi University, has begun serving her one-year prison sentence at Evin prison.

Esmaeil Nazari, Asghari’s spouse, publicly announced, “Today, April 3rd, my wife went to the Courthouse in Shahre Ray to begin serving her sentence at Evin prison.”

Asghari was arrested by security forces at her residence in Tehran on September 14, 2023, and later released on bail from Qarchak Prison in Varamin on October 4, 2023.

In December 2023, the Revolutionary Court sentenced Asghari to one year in prison, a ruling upheld by the Appellate Court of Tehran.

It’s important to note that Asghari was previously detained in connection with nationwide protests in October 2022, initially receiving a sentence of 18 years and three months. However, she was pardoned under the general amnesty and commutation directive, leading to her release from Qarchak Prison in April of the current year.

The Court of Appeal in Tehran has issued a one-year prison sentence for Samaneh Asghari, a student at Kharazmi University.

In a verdict dated February 10, 2024, Branch 36 of the Tehran Court of Appeal upheld Asghari’s one-year sentence. The initial verdict was issued by Branch 29 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court.

Asghari was detained by security forces at her residence in Tehran on September 14, 2023, and subsequently released on bail from Qarchak Prison in Varamin on October 4, 2023.

It is worth noting that Asghari had previously faced detention in connection with nationwide protests in October 2022, leading to an initial sentence of 18 years and three months. However, she was granted a pardon under the general pardon and commutation directive, resulting in her release from Qarchak Prison in April of the current year.

Student Arzhang Mortazavi Sentenced to Prison and Social Restrictions

Arzhang Mortazavi, a student at Kharazmi University, has been handed a one-year sentence by the Revolutionary Court of Alborz province.

Issued by Judge Asef Al-Hosseini, the verdict finds Mortazavi guilty of “spreading propaganda against the regime,” with the detention period subtracted from the prison term. In addition to imprisonment, he faces restrictions such as a ban on joining social media communities, limited use of social media, and a two-year prohibition from leaving the country.

Security forces apprehended Mortazavi in Karaj on October 7, 2023, leading to his detention. After approximately one month, he was released on bail.

His initial arrest occurred on December 17, 2022, at the university entrance. However, on February 21, 2023, he was released from the Central Prison of Karaj under a general “pardon and commutation” directive.

In a separate development, Mortazavi faced a university suspension for four semesters and was mandated to transfer to Damghan University late last month.

Her husband, Esmaeil Nazari, publicly disclosed his wife’s conviction.

Student Arzhang Mortazavi Arrested Once Again in Karaj

Arzhang Mortazavi, a student at Kharazmi University, found himself in the custody of security forces in Karaj on October 7th, where he was subsequently transported to an undisclosed location. This marks his second arrest, following his previous detention during the 2022 nationwide protests.

A reliable source with close ties to Mortazavi’s family provided HRANA with information regarding his arrest at his residence. It has been reported that the agents conducted a search of his home and confiscated some of his personal belongings.

Mortazavi had previously informed on social media about his summons to appear before the Public Security Police.

His initial arrest took place on December 17, 2022, in front of the university entrance. However, on February 21, 2023, he was released from the Central Prison of Karaj under the provisions of a general “pardon and commutation” directive.

In a separate development, late last month, Mortazavi received a suspension from the university for four semesters and was compelled to transfer to Damghan University.

Iran Protests: Samaneh Asghari Sentenced to over 18 Years

The Tehran Revolutionary Court recently sentenced jailed student Samaneh Asghari to 18 years and 3 months in prison. If the verdict is upheld on appeal, based on Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, six years and three months for one charge will be enforceable.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, student Samaneh Asghari was sentenced to eighteen years and three months imprisonment.

In January 2023, Asghari’s lawyer, Erfan Karam-Veisi, stated that the Shahr-e-Rey Public and Revolutionary Court pressed multiple charges against her client, including “assembly and collusion against national security,” “disturbing public order and peace,” “inciting people to wage war,” “propaganda against the regime,” “going in public without a hijab,” “membership in groups to act against national security,” and “spreading falsehood.” Karam-Veisi also stated that the court refused her temporary release on bail.

On October 11, 2022, amid nationwide protests, Asghari, an industrial engineering student at Kharazmi University, was arrested by security forces and jailed in Evin Prison. After a while, she was relocated to Qarchak Prison in Varamin.

Student Samaneh Asghari Still Detained after Three Months

Samaneh Asghari, a student at Kharazmi University, is still detained in Qarchak Prison, Varamin, for over three months. The Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office of Shahr-e-Rey recently filed an indictment against her.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, student Samaneh Asghari is still detained for over three months.

Her lawyer, Erfan Karim-Veisi, announced, Asghari has been charged with “assembly and collusion against national security, disturbing public order, inciting people to commit violence and murder, propaganda against the regime and provoking women to be present in public without Hejab, membership in groups to act against national security and spreading falsehood.”

He also stated that the court refused to grant a release on bail.
On October 11, 2022, security forces arrested Asghari and jailed her in Ward 209 of Evin Prison. After a while, she was relocated to Qarchak Prison.
