Press Release on Widespread Arrests

The Iranian Security Forces embarked on a nationwide mission against human rights defenders and, in particular, members of HRA, in February of 2010 and their mission continues in full force to date. These Actions of Security Forces had catchy names such as “American Cyber Army Defeat Mission” or “Project Against Human Rights.” However, members of HRA have given their own name to these widespread raids and arrests: “The Security Apparatus Against Human Rights Activists in Iran.” The HRA issues press releases and held a conference in which it examined the various dimensions of recent developments.

At the helm of this project stands the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, which, in collaboration with other Security organizations, has been directing these anti-activist efforts from Section 2A of the IRGC and Section 209 of Evin Prison’s Intelligence Services. The detained activists from all corners of the country have been transferred to Evin Prison and their cases are being reviewed by the Court within prison without the benefit of legal counsel or their families’ follow-up.
Majority of the detainees are held in solitary confinement and are denied their right to contact their respective families or attorneys. They are subjected to mistreatment and physical and psychological torture.
Recent reports indicate that the detained activists are under severe pressure to cooperate with the authorities in dismantling HRA and other human rights groups and to assist in making sham videos against their organization to be shown on “national” television. Their goal is to bring these activists before television cameras and force them into spreading falsehoods about the nature of human rights organizations.
