Ahwaz Residents Protested against the Air Pollution

HRANA News Agency – On Friday, a group of Ahwaz citizens participated in a spontaneous protest against the pollution in this city and demanded the city’s leaders to deal with air pollution and dusts. The rally was held while Ahwaz schools had been closed due to bad weather conditions.

According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), when it was announced that the pollution level in Ahwaz city is 66 times more than standard level, a group of citizens participated in a spontaneous rally in the coastal road and stated their protest against the authorities’ indifference and urged the government to deal with the phenomenon and the main cause of the contamination and fix it to maintain the health of the Ahwaz citizens.

It is worth noting that the standard limit of dust in air is 150 micrograms per cubic meter. The pollution in Ahwaz on Friday was 66 which is at least 25 times more than the limit.
Also, according to the Khuzestan Governor- General office’s report, due to inclement weather and dust, all educational centers, morning shift, in Ahwaz city, including secondary year 1 and year 2 are closed on 31st January.
According to authorities, the government had asigned 550 million Tomans to dust control project. Providing free services, compensation to the affected farmers and restore wetlands has been included in this budget. Last year, 18 MPs of Khuzestan resigned in protest against the budget cuts to control the air dust.
According to the health ministry’s last year’s statistics, 80 thousand people lost their lives due to air pollution and dust. Also, according to News Agencies’ reports, just recently, a large numbers of Ahwazi citizens were admitted in hospitals due to respiratory problems.
