HRANA News Agency – Hamid Manafi, the Azerbaijaniani political activist was transferred to the clinic of Evin prison clinic because of his physical deterioration for the second time since his arrest.
According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), Manafi was transferred to solitary confinement from general ward because of going on hunger strike since May 12. A political prisoner released on the bail

HRANA News Agency – Behnam Sheikhi, the Azeri activist, has been released on 300 million Tomans bail, on Wednesday May, 14.

Alireza Farshi released on the bail

HRANA News Agency – Alireza Farshi, the Azeri political activist, has been released from Evin prison on bail.
According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), Alireza Farshi, the Azeri political prisoner and the expelled professor of international university of Jolfa, who was arrested and transferred to Evin prison on February 21, has been released on 100 million Toman bail, on last Tuesday, May 6. An Azeri imprisoned activist on hunger strike

HRANA News Agency – Behnam Shaikhi, the Azeri activist, is on hunger strike since April 22nd.
According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), this Azeri activist, who was arrested on international mother tongue day in Tehran, in April 5, stated that he had spent 11 days on hunger strike from the beginning of his arrest, but after the promise of the authorities telling that he will be released on bail, he had broken it. The mass arrests of Turkish activists still going on

HRANA News Agency – The massive wave of Turkish civil activists’ arrests, in the international mother tongue day is going on.
 
According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), some other Turkish activists who have gathered for international mother tongue day, in Mr. Fathi’s house in Tehran-Akbar Abad, have been arrested by intelligence forces, on Friday February 21st.
 
Intelligence service and security forces rushed to this gathering and arrested some of Azeri activists. Yet it is known that Alireza Farshi, Akbar Azad, Esrafil Soltanian, Mojtaba Mousavi, Behnam Seifi and Behnam Fathi are between detainees.
 
This gathering took two hours long and near 100 people had attended. Due to low number of intelligence forces some guests could open the door and exit from Mr. Fathi’s house.
 
Available sources addressed the intelligence department of police as an administrator and responsible for this operation. There is no information about the place that detainees are transferred.
 
Need to be mentioned, the day before, on Thursday almost 50 political and civil Azeri activists who had gathered for international mother tongue day were arrested in Mr. Akbar Aboulzadeh’s house.

Tense Security Environment in Azerbaijan

HRANA News Agency – On the eve of the fifth anniversary of protests in Azerbaijan Province, a large number of cities in this region are witnessing the presence of security forces in the streets and main squares.

 

According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), tense security environment clearly hangs over the cities of Tabriz, Ahar, Marand and Maragheh.  Eyewitnesses have reported the presence of special units and military and security forces throughout the region including town squares, streets and universities.

 

Prior to May 22, 2011 which coincides with the fifth anniversary of protests in Azerbaijan Province, law enforcement and security agents have systematically begun to arrest political and civil activists in Azerbaijan.

 

Last year, eleven activists were arrested during the same time, and each one of them was sentenced to five years in prison.  Two well-known political activists, Alireza Farshi and Sima Didar, were amongst the detainees who are currently serving their prison terms.

 

Additionally, amongst tens of activists who have been arrested and summoned to court are Ibrahim Nuri, Siamak Koshi, Saeid Naimi, Ayoub Shiri, Sima and Mehdi Derakhshan, Akbar Azad, Sima Didar, Alireza Farshi, Hadi Hamidi Shafiq.

 

As the fifth anniversary of protests in Azerbaijan approaches, security forces have attempted to confiscate satellite dishes in some of the cities.  Since this morning, access to Internet has also been interrupted.   Eye witnesses have reported to HRANA that isolated clashes in streets surrounding the University of Tabriz have occurred, and a few citizens have been arrested in the city of Tabriz.

 

Furthermore, according to an eyewitness, heavy presence of law enforcement agents are such that there are four policemen stationed in every 100 meters.  As this report was being prepared, people continue to gather in the streets.

 

Beginning on May 22, 2006, for a period of one week, various cities in Azerbaijan witnessed widespread protests and clashes in response to a newspaper article that had published an insult to Azeri citizens.  Tens of people were arrested or killed during these demonstrations.
