Hassan Bagherinia, Ex-Faculty of Hakim Sabzevari University, Detained

On June 2, 2024, Hassan Bagherinia, a former faculty member at Hakim Sabzevari University, was detained after visiting the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s offices in Mashhad and subsequently taken to an undisclosed location.

Following his detention, security personnel conducted a search of Bagherinia’s home, during which they seized various personal items belonging to him and his family.

Details regarding the reasons for Bagherinia’s arrest, his current location, and any specific charges have not been disclosed. Bagherinia has previously faced legal challenges related to his activism.

Two Inmates Executed in Qom Prison for Murder and Drug Offenses

On May 26, 2024, Qom Prison in Iran carried out the executions of two inmates convicted of murder and drug-related offenses, as reported by the Iran Human Rights Organization.

The individuals executed were identified as 23-year-old Alireza Arezoomandi from a village in Farahan County, Markazi Province, and 35-year-old Samir (Hamid) Saeedirad from Arak, Markazi Province. Arezoomandi was convicted of murder three years prior, while Saeedirad was found guilty of drug offenses five years earlier.

No official sources or domestic media outlets within the country have provided coverage of these executions at the time of writing. In 2023, 66% of HRANA’s reports on executions lacked official announcements by judicial authorities and went unreported by media inside Iran, highlighting a troubling lack of transparency in due process.

In 2023, the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists in Iran registered the execution of 767 individuals. Out of these, 7 were carried out in public. Among the executed individuals whose genders were identified, 21 were female. Additionally, 2 juvenile offenders, defined as individuals under the age of 18 at the time of their alleged crimes, were also executed. Hatav Akrami Detained by Security Forces in Bukan

On May 31, 2024, security forces arrested Hatav Akrami in Bukan and transferred her to an undisclosed location, according to Kurdpa.

Akrami was reportedly visiting Iran to attend a relative’s wedding. She was arrested at her parent’s house, where agents searched the premises and confiscated some of her personal items. The report also mentioned that Akrami’s Instagram page has become inaccessible after she published posts critical of the authorities.

Akrami’s whereabouts and the charges against her are unknown at this time.

 

Aida Shakarami Charged with “Inciting Immorality and Indecency”

Aida Shakarami, sister of the deceased protester Nika Shakarami, has been formally charged with “inciting immorality and indecency” and “disobedience to officers.”

Her lawyer, Reza Shafakhah, confirmed that the Criminal Court of Tehran is handling the case, with the court session scheduled for June 24, 2024.
Tehran’s Morality Police initially detained Aida and subsequently released her on bail from Shahr-e-Ray Prison on March 23 of this year.
Her sister Nika, a sixteen-year-old from Khorramabad, was tragically killed during protests in Tehran on September 21, 2022.

Reza Khazaie Attacked in Ghezel Hesar Prison After Exposing Conditions

Reza Khazaie, an inmate at Ghezel Hesar Prison, was physically attacked by prison guards and placed in solitary confinement as punitive action today, May 30.

This incident followed the recent dissemination of a video by a group of inmates, including Khazaie, detailing the prison’s harsh conditions. HRANA received and published this video yesterday, in which inmates highlighted severe issues such as frequent executions and widespread violence and abuse against prisoners at Ghezel Hesar.

Khazaie is currently serving a 30-year sentence for drug-related offenses.

According to data gathered by the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists, Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj witnessed the highest number of executions in 2023, with Zahedan Prison following closely behind. Sama Amooshahi Detained in Isfahan

On May 25, 2024, Sama (Samaneh) Amooshahi, aged 33, was taken into custody by security forces in Isfahan.

A report from HRANA highlights that she was apprehended at her home in Isfahan. Amooshahi, who is battling thyroid cancer, is in a precarious health situation due to limited access to necessary medications and treatment, causing significant concern among her family members.

Previously, on July 11, 2023, Amooshahi and 11 others were separately detained by security personnel in Isfahan. She was subsequently released on bail from a prison in Isfahan the following month. Given that her legal proceedings are still underway at the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office of Isfahan, her recent arrest appears to be connected to the ongoing case.

Two Baha’is Detained in Rasht

On May 28, 2024, IRGC Intelligence agents arrested Nazila Khanipour and her son Vesal Heravi, both Baha’i residents of Rasht, and took them to an undisclosed location.

A source close to the family confirmed the arrests to HRANA. The agents raided Khanipour’s home, searched the premises, confiscated personal items, and detained her without presenting an arrest warrant. Concurrently, Heravi was arrested at his workplace. He managed to make a brief phone call to his family.
Previously, Khanipour had been arrested, and Heravi was expelled from the university by order of intelligence agencies.

Baha’is are subjected to violations of their religious rights, comprising 82% of reports on infringements against religious minorities, according to HRA’s 2023 annual report.

The Baha’i faith is not recognized as a legitimate religion by Iranian authorities, leading to systematic and longstanding violations of the rights of Baha’is in the country. This includes the denial of their fundamental right to practice their religion, which constitutes a clear breach of both Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The United Nations covenant holds that every person has the right to freedom of religion, freedom of converting religion, as well as freedom of expression, individually or collectively; openly or secretly.

Azerbaijani-Turk Activist Detained in Jafarabad

On May 25,  2024, Alireza Asadpour, an Azerbaijani-Turk activist, was detained by security forces in Jafarabad, Ardabil Province, and taken to an undisclosed location.

The reasons for Asadpour’s arrest and his current whereabouts remain unclear. He holds a degree in law.

In 2023, the Department of Statistics and Publications of the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA) recorded 329 reports, citing the arrest of 324 citizens linked to ethnic and national rights. Notably, 156 of these arrests occurred without the issuance of a judicial warrant.

Appellate Court Confirms Lengthy Sentences for Eleven Women’s Rights Advocates

The Appellate Court of Gilan Province has confirmed a total of over 60 years in prison sentences for eleven women’s rights advocates.

The ruling, issued on May 28 by Branch 11 and overseen by Judge Mohammad-Sadegh Iran-Aghideh, includes a sentence of nine years, six months, and two days for Zohreh Dadras. She was charged with “forming a group to act against national security.”

Others, including Forough Saminia, Sara Jahani, Yasamin Hashdari, Shiva Shah Sia, Negin Rezaie, Azadeh Chavoshian, and Matin Yazdani, received six years and 47 days each for “joining a group to act against national security.” Additionally, Hooman Taheri and Jelveh Javaheri were each sentenced to one year in prison on charges of “propaganda against the regime.”

The original verdict was issued in late March 2024 following their detention in various cities across Gilan province on August 16 and 17, 2023. They were later released on bail from Lakan Prison in Rasht pending the outcome of their appeals.
