Two Months After Arrest at Mehrabad Airport: Amirhossein Mousavi Still in Limbo

HRANA News Agency – Reza Shafakhah, a defense attorney, has announced that his client, Amirhossein Mousavi, was arrested nearly two months ago at Mehrabad Airport and remains in an uncertain situation.

Reza Shafakhah stated that Mousavi’s account on the social media platform X had been monitored for about six months, leading to his identification and subsequent arrest. He was detained on December 18 at Mehrabad Airport while preparing to travel to Kish Island. He has now been held in temporary detention for nearly two months, and his family is deeply concerned about his situation.

As of the time of this report, there is no information regarding the reasons for his arrest, the charges against him, or his place of detention.

Amirhossein Mousavi, 40 years old, was active on X under the username “James Bi Din (a play on ‘Irreligious James’)” before his arrest.

Mothers of Two Victims of November 2019 Protests Sentenced to Prison

Mahboubeh Ramezani and Rahimeh Yousefzadeh, mothers of Pejman Gholipour and Navid Behboodi, who were killed during the November 2019 protests, have each been sentenced to 18 months and one day in prison by Branch 2 of the Shahriar Revolutionary Court.

According to their lawyer, Reza Shafakhah, the court sentenced both women to six months for “propaganda against the regime,” six months for “membership in the Mothers of November 2019 Victims group,” and six months and one day for “insulting the Supreme Leader.”

Both Ramezani and Yousefzadeh have previously been arrested and sentenced due to their activism.

The November 2019 protests, sparked by a sharp rise in fuel prices, erupted on November 15, 2019, and quickly spread across dozens of cities in Iran. The protests, which lasted several days, saw participation in 719 locations, according to Mohammad Javad Kolivand, an MP from Karaj. Seyed Hossein Naqavi Hosseini, spokesperson for the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission at the time, reported around 7,000 arrests. Human rights organizations estimate that hundreds were killed in the violent crackdown that followed.

Ali Rezaie Sentenced to Two Years in Prison

Ali Rezaie, arrested during the 2022 nationwide protests, has been sentenced to two years in prison by the Tehran Revolutionary Court.

Reza Shafakhah, Mr. Rezaie’s defense attorney, announced this news and wrote: “My client Ali Rezaie, who was arrested during the 2022 protests while still a teenager, was sentenced to two years of imprisonment by Branch 28 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court.”

Ali Rezaie, a resident of Tehran, was arrested by security forces at his residence on December 4, 2022, in connection with the nationwide protests. Following his arrest, he was initially taken to The Ministry of Intelligence’s detention facility, known as Ward 209 of Evin Prison, and eventually transferred to Great Tehran Penitentiary. After one year, he was released from this prison on bail.

Last November, Reza Shafakhah provided an update on his client’s case: “My client was under 18 years old at the time of his arrest. After his case was referred to the Revolutionary Court, we challenged the jurisdiction of the court and requested that the case be referred to the juvenile court. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court made its decision and recognized Branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court as competent to handle the case.”

Previously, the indictment against Mr. Rezaie was issued on charges of “assaulting a police officer” and “assembly and collusion to commit a crime against national security.”

 

Aida Shakarami Charged with “Inciting Immorality and Indecency”

Aida Shakarami, sister of the deceased protester Nika Shakarami, has been formally charged with “inciting immorality and indecency” and “disobedience to officers.”

Her lawyer, Reza Shafakhah, confirmed that the Criminal Court of Tehran is handling the case, with the court session scheduled for June 24, 2024.
Tehran’s Morality Police initially detained Aida and subsequently released her on bail from Shahr-e-Ray Prison on March 23 of this year.
Her sister Nika, a sixteen-year-old from Khorramabad, was tragically killed during protests in Tehran on September 21, 2022.
