Death Sentence Issued to Man in Tehran

An Afghan man named Sattar was recently sentenced to death by the Second Branch of the Criminal Court of Tehran Province on charges of murder.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Rokna, the verdict was later upheld by the Supreme Court.

At dawn on Wednesday, September 22, a prisoner was executed in Karaj Central Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Tabnak, the inmate had previously been sentenced to death on charges of moharebeh (rebellion, or waging war against God in Shariah Law), disturbing public security, and murder.

Inmate Executed in Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj

An inmate whose identity is not known as of this writing was recently executed in Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Javan newspaper, the man had previously been sentenced to death for murder by Branch 12 of the Tehran Criminal Court

Branch 15 of the Supreme Court of Tehran upheld the death sentence and had sent it to the prosecutor’s office branch for the execution of judgment.

On Wednesday, September 15, a prisoner who had previously been sentenced to death for murder was executed in Rajai Shahr prison in Karaj.

According to the HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activist, quoting Rokna, six years after the incident, this sentence was referred to the Judgment Execution Branch after being approved by the Supreme Court, and it was carried out last Wednesday.

Death Sentence and Lashes Issued to Defendants in Tehran

A defendant in Tehran was recently sentenced, in absentia, to death after being charged with murder.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Rokna, the case’s other defendants were sentenced to other punishments, including prison time and lashes.

According to this report, a man named Reza, who is not currently in Iran, was sentenced to death in absentia for committing murder and to 10 years in prison and 74 lashes for other crimes he committed.

The second person who was involved in the conflict was sentenced to pay a ransom, a fine to the government, and 55 months in prison and lashes for injuring the victim’s father.

A third person was sentenced to 20 months in prison and lashes for disturbing public order and committing other crimes, and the other individuals involved in the bloody conflict were sentenced to one year in prison and 74 lashes for disturbing public order.

On Saturday, September 11, Adham Maksani, a native of Shamsabad village of Bampour district, was executed in Iranshahr Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting The Baloch Activists Campaign, Maksani was previously sentenced to death for murder and had spent 10 years in Iranshahr prison.

Ali Mardan Boland Gerami Executed in Yasuj Prison after Receiving Sentence Based Solely on “Qassameh”

At dawn on Wednesday, September 8, Ali Mardan Boland Gerami, was executed in Yasuj Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Gerami was sentenced to death for murder based on “Qasameh”, an accepted form of proof of guilt within Iran’s legal system based solely on relatives’ oaths.

Mr. Gerami was sentenced to death for murdering his wife, and, while the court did not find adequate evidence, it made the ruling based on the swearing of the wife’s family.

Prisoner who was Sentenced to Death Based Solely on Qassameh (Swearing) in Imminent Danger of Execution

Ali Mardan Boland Gerami, a citizen of Yasuj, is on the verge of execution despite a clear lack of sufficient evidence.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Gerami’s sentence is based only on “Qassameh”.  Qassameh is an accepted form of proof of guilt within Iran’s legal system based solely on relatives’ oaths.

Mr. Gerami was sentenced to death for murdering his wife while the court did not find adequate evidence, it made the ruling based on the swearing of the family of the wife.

After filing the appeal request, the case was referred to a court of equal rank where the death sentence was confirmed. The Supreme Court also upheld the sentence. Mr. Gerami’s case has been transferred to the Judgment Enforcement Unit and now he is on the verge of execution.

“Six days ago, the death sentence was supposed to carry out, but the family was able to get more time,” an informed source said. “This opportunity will end tomorrow and he may be executed at any moment.”

Swearing (Qasameh) is one way, within the Islamic jurisprudence and criminal law in Iran, to prove crimes related to murder and physical injuries when there is no enough evidence against the suspect. In case of premeditated murder, the relatives of a plaintiff must bring 50 relatives to the court to swear an oath that the defendant is guilty. The number is 25 for unpremeditated murder.
