Two Prisoners Executed in Karaj Central Penitentiary

HRANA– At dawn on Wednesday, August 6, the death sentences of two prisoners previously convicted on drug-related charges were carried out in Karaj Central Penitentiary.

HRANA has confirmed the identities of the executed individuals as Farhad Tavakoli and Aryo Jalali.

The two had been arrested on drug-related charges and later sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court.

As of the time of this report, the execution of these prisoners has not been officially announced by prison authorities or responsible institutions.

According to HRANA’s report, in 2024, over 52 percent of executed prisoners had been convicted on drug-related charges. Over the past ten years, individuals convicted of drug trafficking have accounted for 40 percent of all executions. Unfortunately, HRANA’s statistics show no progress in reducing executions for drug-related offenses.

On September 19, 2022, an inmate convicted of drug-related crimes was injured in Karaj Central Penitentiary, Alborz Province.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on September 19, 2022, the Karaj Central Penitentiary officials executed an inmate identified as Sirus Sha’alani, 22.

This execution has not been reported by official sources and media outlets inside Iran so far.

On Thursday, September 8, 2022, at least two protests took place in Iran.

The families of prisoners presently on death row in Ghezel Hesar Prison and Karaj Central Penitentiary protested before the Judiciary building in Tehran. These protestors held placards asking to stop executions.

Residents of Mariwan held a protest demanding security for women, following Shalir Rasouli’s death at a hospital, a woman who threw herself out of the window of her apartment to escape an assailant.

On Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at least seven protests and one labour strike took place in Iran.

A group of families of prisoners presently on death row gathered in front of the Karaj Revolutionary Court to demand the end of executions. Three inmates were executed in Karaj Central Penitentiary and six are at risk of imminent execution in Ghezel Hesar Prison.

A group of Women Rights Activists protested at the Justice Building in Marivan, Kurdistan Province. The protestors demanded security for women, following a recent incident.

 

For the third consecutive day, the workers of Kian Tire Manufacturing Company went on strike and assembled at their workplace to protest unpaid wages and job uncertainty.

A group of contract teachers gathered before the Governorate Building in Arak to demand official recruitment by the Ministry of Education.

The residents of the Morgmalek village in Shahrekord County held a protest against slow court proceedings in handling a lawsuit in regard to their lands.

A number of school service workers held a protest in Mahabad and Kermanshah.

The workers of Ardestan Cement Factory gathered before the Ministry of Labour in Ardestan, Isfahan Province.

Three Inmates Executed in Karaj

On September 6, 2022, Karaj Central Penitentiary officials executed three inmates who were previously convicted of drug-related crimes.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on September 6, 2022, three inmates identified by HRANA as Shahram Kakavand, Aziziar Hashemi and Peyman Soleymani were executed in Karaj Central Penitentiary.

As HRANA reported yesterday, they had been relocated to solitary confinement as a routine procedure for carrying out the execution.

Inmate Executed in Khorramabad Prison; Twelve about to Be Executed in Karaj

On September 3, 2022, an inmate previously convicted of drug-related crimes was executed in Khorramabad Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on September 3, 2022, Korramabad Prison officials executed an unidentified inmate.

This execution has not been reported by official sources and media outlets inside Iran so far.

On August 31, nine death-row convicts were also sent to solitary confinement awaiting imminent execution in Rajai Shahr Prison. On September 4, in Karaj Central Penitentiary three death-row inmates were taken to solitary confinement as well. The identities and the charges against these inmates are still unknown.
