The Supreme Court of Iran has affirmed the sentences for eight defendants involved in the case surrounding the death of Basij militia member Ruhollah Ajamian, as reported by Shargh Newspaper.
Initially handed down by the Karaj Revolutionary Court, the verdicts stand as follows: Hamid Ghareh-Hassanlou has been sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment in Yazd, while Reza Aria, Hossein Mohammadi, and Mehdi Mohammadi each face ten years of exile in Kerman.

Shayan Charani, Amir-Mohammad Jafari, and Ali Moazzami Goodarzi have been sentenced to three years of imprisonment in Qom. However, both Charani and Jafari were granted pardons and subsequently released, whereas Goodarzi’s sentence was upheld.
Furthermore, Aryan Farzamnia’s verdict has been revoked due to documented mental and psychological health concerns.
On January 7, 2023, two other individuals involved in this case, Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Mohammad Hosseini, were executed.
These individuals were initially apprehended in Karaj for their alleged roles in the death of Basij militia member Ruhollah Ajamian during a protest.
Since the inception of the 2022 nationwide protests, judicial authorities have handed down death sentences to 25 protestors thus far, with 7 executions having already taken place. While the Supreme Court of Iran has upheld the death sentence for Mohammad Ghobadlou, it has overturned ten other death sentences. The remaining seven death sentences were issued by lower courts and are currently awaiting finalization.
According to Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reports, at least 25 protesters have been sentenced to death since the beginning of the 2022 protests.
Among them, Mohammad Ghobadlou’s death sentence was recently affirmed by the first branch of the Supreme Court of Iran. The death sentences of other protestors, Mansour Hout, Nezam’aldeen Hout, Ebrahim Naroui, Abbas (Mojahed) Kourkouri, Shoaib Mirbalouchzohi Rigi, Mansour Dehmorde, and Kambiz Khorout, were initially handed down by lower courts and are currently under review by the Supreme Court.
Additionally, the death sentences of Reza Arya, Hamid Ghare Hassanlou, Sahand Nourmohammadzadeh, Hossein Mohammadi, Mehdi Mohammadifard, Arshia Takdastan, Javad Rouhi, Saman Seydi (Yasin), Mahan Sadrat Marani (Madani), and Mohammad Boroughni have been overturned at various times. Their cases have been referred for review to another court branch. Some of these individuals have been sentenced to imprisonment or exile following the reversal of their death sentences, while the cases of others are still under review.
To date, 7 protesters have been executed.
Mohsen Shekari was the first to be executed on December 8, 2022. Four days later, Majid Reza Rahnavard was executed in public in Mashhad.

According to reports obtained by HRANA, these 25 protesters have primarily been sentenced to death on charges of alleged “spreading corruption on earth” and “enmity against God (Moharebeh).” Many of them have been denied proper access to legal representation of their choice during the judicial process.
Some close relatives of these individuals have disclosed to HRANA that “forced confessions extracted under psychological and physical duress/torture by interrogators” have been presented as evidence during the trial.

Background on the 2022 Nationwide Protests
The arrest of 22-year-old Mahsa (Jina) Amini by morality police due to alleged “improper veiling” and her subsequent death during detention led to widespread protests in Iran. The protesters commenced the longest sustained widespread protests in the history of the Islamic Republic on September 17, 2022, with the slogan “Woman, life, freedom” and protested the laws, structure, and competency of the regime. Thousands were arrested and hundreds were killed in the crackdown on protesters by security/military forces.

The Chief Justice of Alborz Province announced that eleven defendants of a legal case, known as “the murder of a Basij militia force Ruhollah Ajamian,” have been sentenced to a total of 79 years in prison. The charges against three other co-defendants were dropped, and they were released after being pardoned. These people were previously arrested over the 2022 nationwide protests.
According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Tasnim news agency, 11 people, arrested amid the 2022 nationwide protests, were sentenced to a total of 79 years in prison.
Without mentioning the charges, the Chief Justice of Alborz Province stated that according to this verdict, Hamid Ghareh-Hassanlou was sentenced to 15 years, Reza Aria, Hossein Mohammadi, Mehdi Mohammadi and Arian Farzamnia to ten years, Mohammad-Amin Akhlaghi Savojbolaghi, Amin-Mehdi Shokrollai and Farzaneh Ghareh-Hassanlou, to five years, and Shayan Charani, Amir-Mohammad Jafari and Ali Moazzami Goodarzi to three years.
With re-examination, the charges against three other defendants, Behrad Ali Kenari, Javad Zargaran and Reza Shaker Zavardehi were changed from “spreading corruption on earth” to “assembly and collusion against national security” and “propaganda against the regime.” Consequently, these defendants were granted pardons and set free.
“These verdicts are not finalized and defendants can bring an appeal to the Supreme Court within the deadline period,” he added.
On January 7, 2023, two other defendants of this legal case, Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Mohammad Hosseini were executed.
These individuals were arrested in Karaj over the murder of a Basij militia force Ruhollah Ajamian” during the protest.
About the 2022 Nationwide Protests
The arrest of Mahsa Amini by Tehran Morality Police for her improper hejab and her suspicious death on September 16 sparked protests sweeping across Iran. During the nationwide protests, about 19600 people, including journalists, artists, lawyers, teachers, students and civil rights activists, were arrested.
On January 7, 2023, Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Mohammad Hosseini were executed. They were previously arrested at protests and sentenced to death in a legal case known as “the death of a Basij Militia force Ruhollah Ajamian.” A while ago, their sentences were confirmed by the Supreme Court of Iran.
According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Tasnim, on January 7, 2023, Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Mohammad Hosseini were executed.
Karami, age 22, a resident of Karaj, was a karateka with several top titles and championships. His lawyer recently informed HRANA that he went on a dry hunger strike last Wednesday.
Also, Mohammad Hosseini’s lawyer wrote on Twitter that his client had been tortured with iron bars and shockers.
Earlier, Mohsen Shekari and Majidreza Rahnavard were also executed over protests. According to data obtained by HRANA, at least 111 other protestors have been sentenced to death or have faced charges that can lead to a death sentence.
Dozens of Iranian people arrested at recent protests either have been sentenced to death or have faced charges such as “armed insurrection against the regime (Baghi)”, “enmity against God (Moharebeh)”, or “spreading corruption on the earth”. Charges which may result in death penalty. At the time of this writing, 2 protestors have been executed, 11 others have been sentenced to death and 47 others are facing charges that could lead to death sentences. This report provides the legal case details of 58 of these individuals.
Several arrested individuals have been accused of “leading protests” by the Judicial officials. Allegations that have resulted in charges such as Baghi, Moharebeh, and Spreading Corruption on earth.
At the time of this writing, HRANA can verify the issuance of 11 death sentences against imprisoned protestors as enlisted in this report. The other 47 people listed below are under the impending threat of death sentence.
Due to the lack of transparency in the judicial process, in many cases opened by security institutions against the protestors, the identities of some co-defendants remain undisclosed. For example, reports obtained by HRANA about a legal case over an incident during protests in the Ekbatan town of Tehran that led to the death of a Basij Militia agent, Arman Aliverdi, indicate that there are nine co-defendants. Nonetheless, HRANA has been able to identify only two of them. Similarly, in another legal case regarding protests in two neighborhoods in Isfahan that led to the death of three security forces (Col. Esmail Cheraghi, Mohammad Hossein Karimi, and two Basij Militia individuals Mohammad-Hossein Karimi and Mohsen Hamidi), HRANA could identify only 6 out of 10 co-defendants.
It is worth noting that at the time of this writing, the executions of two protestors, Mohsen Shekari and Majid-Reza Rahnavard, were carried out following an extremely quick and non-transparent judicial process, Mohsen and Majid-Reza did not even have access to chosen lawyers at their trials. Mohsen Shekari was executed in Tehran after 74 days of detention on December 8, 2022, and Majid-Reza Rahnavard was publicly executed by being hanged in Mashhad on December 12, 2022, only 23 days after his arrest.
The following enlists legal case details of 58 detainees who are either sentenced to death or at risk of receiving a death sentence.
