Five Individuals Receive Prison Sentences and Fines on Political Charges

The Appeals Court of Tehran has issued a verdict sentencing Zahra Safaie, Mohammad Masoud Moeini (Zahra Safaie’s son), and Kamran Rezaiefar to a combined total of 12 years in prison. Parastoo Moeini (Zahra Safaie’s daughter) and Teymour Rezaeian, two other defendants in the case, have been fined.

The recent ruling, issued in early February, allocates five years of imprisonment each for Safaie and Rezaiefar, with Masoud Moeini receiving a two-year sentence. The initial conviction by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Iman Afshari, was for “assembly and collusion against national security.” Notably, Masoud Moeini’s prison sentence has been reduced from five to two years, and Parastoo Moeini’s five-year sentence has been replaced with a fine.

The arrests took place on September 12, 2023, with Rezaeian apprehended one day later. Initially held in Ward 209 of Evin Prison, they were later transferred to the IRGC’s detention center, known as A-1.

As per HRANA reports, Safaie is currently detained in the Women’s Ward of Evin Prison, while her son, Mohammad-Masoud Moeini, and Rezaiefar are in Ward 4 of the same prison. Two other defendants have been released on bail

Five Citizens Receive a Combined 20 Years and Fine for Political Charges

The Tehran Revolutionary Court has recently sentenced Zahra Safaie, Parastoo Moeini, Mohammad-Masoud Moeini, and Kamran Rezaiefar to five years, totaling twenty years in prison for political charges. Meanwhile, co-defendant Teymour (Timur) Rezaeian has been ordered to pay a fine.

Presiding over the court, Judge Iman Afshari found these individuals guilty of “assembly and collusion against national security.”

The arrests occurred on September 12, 2023, with Rezaeian apprehended one day later. Initially held in Ward 209 of Evin Prison, Later, they were transferred to the IRGC’s detention center, known as A-1.

According to HRANA reports, Safaie is currently held in the Women’s Ward of Evin Prison, while her son, Mohammad-Masoud Moeini, and Rezaiefar are in Ward 4 of the same prison. Two other defendants have been released on bail.

Notably, Rezaiefar has a history of arrests and convictions. In November 2021, he received a death sentence for “spreading corruption on earth,” which was later overturned by the Supreme Court. The current status of his legal case remains uncertain.

 

Arrest of Three Family Members in Tehran

On September 12, 2023, Zahra Safaie, Parastoo Moeini, and Mohmoud-Masoud Moeini, three members of the same family, were apprehended at their Tehran residence and are currently being held in Ward 209 of Evin Prison.

HRANA received information about their arrests from a source close to the family.

The exact reasons for their detentions and the charges brought against them are presently undisclosed. It’s worth noting that these detainees have previously encountered legal issues related to political matters and have been incarcerated in the past.

Political Prisoner Zahra Safai Denied Urgent Medical Treatment by Prison Officials

On Tuesday, April 12, 2022, despite prior agreement and a set appointment, prison officials denied dispatching the political prisoner Zahra Safai to a hospital. The denial was under the pretext of her disagreement with transfer with handcuff and foot cuffs. According to the State Prisons and Security and Corrective Measures Organization’s rules, transferring the prisoners with foot cuffs except for prisoners of violent crimes is forbidden.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, through the obstruction of prison officials, political prisoner Zahra Safai was denied medical treatment.

Mrs Safai suffers from heart disease and has had angiography surgery in the past. Since September of last year, she has been dispatched several times to a hospital outside the prison. This time, the prison officials denied her access to urgent medical care.

On February 24, 2020, security forces arrested Zahra Safai and her daughter Parastoo Moeini in Tehran and transferred them to Ward 209 of Evin Prison. In April 2020, they were sent in exile to Qarchak Prison in Varamin City. On June 28, 2020, Mrs Safai was released on bail with the amount of 300 million tomans. However, on July 26 of that year, they increased the bail ten times and subsequently arrested and sent her back to Qarchak Prison when she could not provide the set bail.

In February of 2021, Branch 23 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran sentenced Mrs Safai to 5 years in prison on the charge of “assembly and collusion to act against national security”, one year on the charge of “propaganda against the regime” and two years on the charge of “offensive statements against the former and current Supreme Leader of Iran”. As an additional punishment, she was banned from leaving the country and membership in any political parties or civil groups.

Zahra Safai has also faced arrest and conviction in 2006. Further, during the 1980’s she had been imprisoned for a while. Her father, Haji Safai was a well-known businessman who was executed on the charge of “advocacy for the People’s Mujahedin Organization of Iran (the Mujahedin-e-Khalq or MEK)”.
