Seven Inmates Executed in Yazd, Mashhad and Birjand

HRANA, Human Rights Activists News Agency-Haal Vsh reports the execution of seven inmates on May 4, 2023, across three different prisons in Iran: five in Yazd prison, one in Birjand, and one in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad.

Among the five executed in Yazd, three have been identified as Saboor Shah-Bakhsh (23), Amir Rameshk (34), and Abdolbasir Bazhm (29). These prisoners were convicted of drug-related crimes in recent years. The identities of the other two inmates remain unknown, but it is reported that one was convicted of drug-related crimes and the other of murder.

Additionally, on the same day, an inmate named Nour-Ahmad Zavarzahi from Zahedan was executed in Vakilabad prison, Mashhad. He had been sentenced to death for drug offenses two years ago.

On April 29, Birjand Prison officials executed an inmate identified as Jaber Aminifar without notifying his family. He was imprisoned for several years.

None of the official sources and media outlets inside the country has reported these executions at the time of writing.

In 2022, the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists in Iran registered 457 reports related to the death penalty. This included 92 death sentences, including the conviction of 6 people to public execution and 565 execution sentences were carried out, 2 of which have been carried out in public. Based on the announced identifications of some of the executed individuals, 501 were male and 11 were female. In addition, 5 juvenile offenders were executed in 2022, meaning they were under the age of 18 at the time they committed the crime.

 

Five Inmates Executed in Rajai Shahr Prison

Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA)-On May 3, 2023, five inmates convicted of murder were executed in Rajai Shahr prison, Karaj.

Etemad newspaper reported that an inmate identified as S. Saleh Bidmeshki was executed for assisting in murder in Rajai Shahr Prison, On July 2, 2018, this man assisted in killing fellow-prisoner Vahid Moradi. His death was confirmed by Supreme Court after being two times revoked. Another inmate who had been sentenced to death for this homicide was spared from execution after paying restitution payment and receiving consent from Moradi’s family.

Another executed inmate has been identified as Hossein (last name unknown). On May 24, 2019, he shot a young man dead during a group fight and wounded the victim’s father.

The third executed inmate had been convicted of murder in Tehran 12 years ago. The fourth inmate has killed his family members and his father-in-law. The report did not provide any information about the fifth inmate.

Iranian Supreme Court Upholds Jamshid Sharmahd’s Death Sentence

The Iranian Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence of Jamshid Sharmahd, an Iranian-German national, according to a press conference held by a Judiciary spokesperson. Sharmahd was initially sentenced to death by the Tehran Revolutionary Court for multiple charges including “spreading corruption on earth” and “directing terrorist actions,” presided over by Judge Salavati.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Mizan, the judiciary’s news agency, Jamshid Sharmahd’s death sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court of Iran.

Sharmahd’s daughter, Ghazaleh Sharmahd, previously expressed her ignorance of the legal proceedings and her father’s current location. She stated, “Sharmahd is being held in solitary confinement, where he was coerced into signing written statements during interrogation, and his lawyer was denied access to his files.”

Sharmahd was apprehended by the Iranian Intelligence Ministry on August 1, 2020, on the grounds of being one of the leaders of a monarchist opposition group known as Tondar.
In 2006, Sharmahd claimed that he has undertaken partly the leadership of the Kingdom Assembly of Iran (aka Tondar) after Frood Fooladvand, the founder of the Assembly, was abducted and disappeared in Turkey. However, the Association’s spokesperson, Rozita Manteghi, denied his leadership claims at the time.

Iranian-German national Sharmahd, age 67, was a resident of the United States before his arrest.

Political Prisoner Nayeb Askari Sentenced to Death for Enmity Against God

The Branch 2 of the Urmia Revolutionary Court sentenced Nayeb Askari to death for “enmity against God (Moharebeh).”

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on April 15, 2023, Urmia judicial officials informed Nayeb Askari’s lawyer that his client had received a death sentence for the charge of “enmity against God (Moharebeh).”

Membership in a Kurdish opposition party was cited as an example of this charge.

On March 27, 2021, IRGC intelligence agents arrested Askari in Urmia and transferred him to a detention facility. On June 17, 2021, he was transferred to Urmia Prison, where he has been detained since.

According to sources close to his family, Askari has reportedly been in poor health during his detention. In February or January 2022, he suffered from a convulsion but was denied proper medical care. The prison infirmary was reportedly ill-equipped and in such cases suffices to the arbitrary prescription of a non-specific pill.

On July 12, 2021, a new case was opened against him following the complaint of the head of Urmia Prison. For this case, he was sentenced to three months more imprisonment and 50 lashes for the charge of “disrupting prison order”.

Abbas Korkori Sentenced to Death

According to the news agency of Iran’s judiciary, Mizan, Abbas (Mojahed) Korkori, a resident of Izeh, has been sentenced to death by the Ahvaz Revolutionary Court on charges of  “enmity against God (moharebeh)” and “spreading corruption on earth.” Korkori was also convicted of the destruction of private and public properties, forming and participating in anti-regime groups, and armed rebellion against the regime.

The Revolutionary Court claims that Korkori was found guilty based on evidence obtained by CCTV cameras and Criminal Justice expert reports, which testify that the bullets that led to the death of 10-year-old Kian Pirfalak during protests in Izeh, were shot from the gun discovered with the defendant. Additionally, weapons, bullets, and Molotov cocktails were discovered at the defendant’s hideout, and the Governor of Izeh reported damages caused by the defendant and his associates to public and government properties.

“This verdict is not final and can be appealed to the Supreme Court,” the report asserts.

However, Pirfalak’s parents have repeatedly denied these accusations and claimed that their son was killed in a shooting by regime forces. Zeinab Molaei-Rad, Kian’s mother, said during his funeral, “On the way back home, the regime agents opened fire on our car.”

“As Kian’s mother, I will refute any claims that any regular citizen can be the murderer of my son,” his mother said in reaction to the accusations against Abbas Korkori and several others.

During the protest in Izeh, on November 16, 2022, at least seven individuals, including Kiran Pirfalak, were killed in the shooting by regime forces.

The arrest of Mahsa Amini by Tehran Morality Police for her improper hejab and her suspicious death on September 16 sparked protests sweeping across Iran. During the nationwide protests, about 19600 people, including journalists, artists, lawyers, teachers, students and civil rights activists, were arrested.

Inmate Executed in Langerud Prison, Qom Province

On April 4, 2023, an inmate convicted of murder was executed in Langerud Prison, Qom Province.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Iran Human Rights Organization, on April 4, 2023, an inmate identified as Horeddin Shokri, age 37, was executed in Qom Province.

Shokri reportedly was sentenced to death about four years ago for killing someone in a group fight.

None of the official sources and media outlets inside the country has reported this execution at the time of writing.

Five Inmates Executed in Adelabad and Dastgerd Prisons

On April 5, 2023, three inmates convicted of drug-related crimes were executed in Adelabad Prison, Shiraz. Also, on March 19, a man and woman convicted of murder were executed in Dastgerd Prison, Isfahan.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Iran Human Rights Organization, Adelabad prison officials carried out the execution of three inmates.

These individuals have been identified as Yousef Jome’eh Hosseini (an Afghan national), Kazem Rasouli and Ali Hossein Sadeghzadeh, all convicted of drug-related crimes three years ago.

Also, Iran Human Rights Organization reported that on March 19, 2023, Hassan Bahmani and Maryam Najjar (female) were executed in Dastgerd prison, Isfahan. They were previously convicted of murder in two separate cases.

Five Inmates Spared from Execution in Kerman and Karaj

In Kerman and Karaj provinces, five inmates convicted of murder in separate cases were spared from execution by receiving consent from the victims’ families.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Young Journalists Club, four death-row received consent from victims’ families in Kerman Prison.

Similarly, the General Director of Alborz Prisons Organization announced that in one of the prisons of this province, a death-row inmate convicted of killing his cellmate in Hamedan Prison received amnesty from the victim’s family after 23 years of incarceration.

Six Prisoners Go on Hunger Strike in Protest against Sentences

Six prisoners facing national-security-related charges, Rahman Parhazoo, Aran Omri, Amir Moshtagh Gangachin, Fakhreddin Doodkanloo, Milan and Ashkan Othmanzadeh, went on hunger strike against received death penalties and long sentences in Urmia Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on March 14, 2023, six prisoners of Urmia Prison went on hunger strike.

An informed source told HRANA, “they went on hunger strike to protest against the received sentences. Last month, Branch 3 of the Urmia Revolutionary Court sentenced Aran Omri and Rahman Parhazoo to death on the charge of spying for Israel. Amir Moshtagh Gangachin, Fakhreddin Doodkanloo, Milan and Ashkan Othmanzadeh received ten years for the same charge.”

In October-November 2021, security forces arrested these individuals accused of espionage. On March 11, 2021, they were jailed in Urmia Prison.

In May 2022, media outlets published a video of a man, allegedly an IRGC member interrogated by Israeli forces inside Iran, confessing that he was potting to hit on Israel. Later, this man called himself Mansour Rasouli denied his confession, claiming he is just a farmer who was abducted and forced to state these false statements.

Three weeks later, IRGC announced the arrest of several people who were working for Israel and kidnapping people to force them to extract false confessions.

On May 22, 2022, IRGC announced that the members of a network spying for Israel have been apprehended.

 

 

Political Prisoner Mohyeddin Ebrahimi Executed in Urmia Prison

On March 17, 2023, political prisoner Mohyeddin Ebrahimi, a resident of Oshnavieh County, was executed in Urmia Prison. This prison official also carried out the execution of five other inmates convicted of drug-related crimes.

Last Wednesday, March 15, prison officials transferred him to solitary confinement as a routine procedure for carrying out the execution.

On October 23, 2017, Ebrahimi was arrested at the border area adjacent to Iraq for allegedly carrying alcoholic beverages. During the arrest, he was injured by shooting three times in the foot.

On September 23, 2018, branch 2 of Urmia Revolutionary Court, presided by Judge Ali Sheikhlou, was sentenced to death for “collaboration with one of the anti-regime political parties.” The Supreme Court overturned this verdict and returned the case to the same branch of the Revolutionary Court for review. This court branch sentenced him again to death, and this time, the verdict was confirmed by the Supreme Court.
Moreover, five inmates, including a woman, all convicted of drug-related crimes, were executed in this prison. HRANA has identified these individuals as Yasin Rashidi, Asha (Foroohar) Abbasnejad, Jahanbakhsh Radlooie, Mohammad Ayoubian and Nasrin (female-last name unknown).
