Azerbaijani-Turk Activist Salar Taher Afshar Detained in Urmia

On February 6, 2024, security forces arrested Salar Taher Afshar in Urmia and subsequently transferred him to an undisclosed facility. The news of Afshar’s apprehension was disclosed by his sister.

At present, the specific reasons behind his arrest, his current whereabouts, and the charges levied against him remain undisclosed.

This recent arrest comes after Taher Afshar was previously detained on December 19, 2023. A court hearing addressing the charge of “assisting in spreading propaganda against the regime” was conducted by the Tabriz Revolutionary Court on January 27, 2024.

In 2023, the Department of Statistics and Publications of the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA) documented 324 cases of citizens being arrested by security forces for their advocacy of ethnic rights.

Azerbaijani-Turk Activist Morteza Parvin Detained in Ardabil

On February 6, 2024, Azerbaijani-Turk activist Morteza Parvin was apprehended by security forces in Ardabil. He was taken to an undisclosed location following his arrest.

Parvin was detained at his father’s residence, where the agents conducted a search, resulting in the confiscation of some of his personal belongings.

As of now, the reasons behind Parvin’s arrest, his current location, and the charges filed against him remain unknown.

This incident marks not the first time Parvin has been subject to arrest due to his involvement as an Azerbaijani-Turk activist.

Azerbaijani-Turk Activist Karim Esmaeil-Zadeh Receives Six-Month Imprisonment

The Tabriz Revolutionary Court has sentenced Azerbaijani-Turk Activist Karim Esmaeil Zadeh to six months in prison. Co-defendants Abdullah Ansari and Ebrahim Rezaie have been acquitted of charges in this legal case.

The verdict finds Esmaeil-Zadeh guilty of “inciting people to violence on the Internet,” with the detention period to be subtracted from the overall prison term.

On August 16, 2023, security forces arrested these individuals as they entered a football stadium in Tabriz. Three days later, they were released on bail from Tabriz Prison. Subsequently, Esmaeil-Zadeh was re-arrested on August 27 in Tabriz, only to be released on a second bail from the city’s prison.

Azerbaijani-Turk Activist Salar Taher Afshar Arrested in Urmia

Urmia, December 19, 2023 – Iran Cyber Police detained Azerbaijani-Turk activist Salar Taher Afshar in Urmia, subsequently placing him in custody at a police station in Tabriz.

A reliable source close to Afshar’s family revealed to HRANA that the activist was arrested at his father’s residence by Iran Cyber Police. According to the source, the agents exerted pressure on the family, warning them not to disclose details of their son’s arrest.

The grounds for Afshar’s arrest and the specific charges against him remain undisclosed at this time.

It is pertinent to note that Afshar has a history of previous arrests and judicial confrontations stemming from his activism.

Azerbaijani-Turk Activist Peyman Ebrahimi Receives Prison Sentence

The Public and Revolutionary Court of Tabriz has sentenced Azerbaijani-Turk Activist Peyman Ebrahimi to 22 months and 17 days in prison.

Presiding over the court, Judge Hamlbar mandated that Ebrahimi serve seven months and 16 days for “propaganda against the regime” and 15 months and one day for “insulting the Supreme Leader of Iran.” Notably, six months of this prison term have been suspended for five years.

If the verdict stands after the appeal process, 15 months and one day will be imposed on Ebrahimi.
His arrest on August 26, 2023, in Tabriz led to his release on bail on October 25.

Azerbaijani-Turk Activist Hamed Yeganeh Pour Detained in Tabriz

On November 7, 2023, Azerbaijani-Turk activist Hamed Yeganeh Pour was apprehended by security forces in Tabriz and subsequently transported to the Ministry of Intelligence’s detention facility within the city.

Today, on November 8, Yeganeh Pour managed to contact his family, as relayed by a source close to them, revealing his detention at the Ministry of Intelligence’s facility. It’s crucial to note that Yeganeh Pour has a pre-existing heart condition, which makes any stressful situation a potential threat to his health.

At present, the specific reasons behind his arrest and the nature of the allegations against him remain undisclosed, raising concerns regarding his well-being and legal status.

Azerbaijani-Turk Activist Hossein Azadi Apprehended in Tabriz

Hossein Azadi, an Azerbaijani-Turk activist, was taken into custody by security forces in Tabriz and subsequently transported to an undisclosed location.

The arrest occurred on Saturday, September 23rd, in Tabriz. As of now, both the charges against Azadi and his current whereabouts remain undisclosed.

University Student Farhad Hosseini Arrested in Zanjan

On September 19, Farhad Hosseini, a student at the University of Zanjan, was apprehended within the city and subsequently transported to an undisclosed location.

A source with close ties to Hosseini’s family shared with HRANA that they remain unaware of the exact location where he is being held, causing significant concern. Furthermore, his personal social media profiles have been removed.

The grounds for Hosseini’s arrest and the specific allegations against him remain shrouded in uncertainty at this point.

It’s worth noting that Farhad Hosseini is an Azerbaijani (Turk) activist currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Management at the University of Zanjan.

Azerbaijani (Turk) Activist Saeed Minaie Arrested in Bonab

In a recent development, on August 7, 2023, Azerbaijani (Turk) activist Saeed Minaie was taken into custody by security forces in Bonab County, East Azerbaijan province.

Minaie was apprehended at his father’s rural abode within Bonab County. The precise grounds for his apprehension and current location remain undisclosed.

In 2022, the Department of Statistics of Human Rights Activists in Iran documented 225 instances of arrests pertaining to individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds, highlighting ongoing concerns about the protection of ethnic minorities rights in the country.

 

Azerbaijani (Turk) Activist Saleh Mola-Abbasi Sentenced to Three Months in Prison

Ahar Criminal Court has handed down a three-month prison sentence to Azerbaijani (Turk) activist Saleh Mola-Abbasi.

The verdict was delivered by Judge Khadivi, who informed Mola-Abbasi’s lawyer, Asghar Mohammadi, that his client has been found guilty of “spreading falsehood to disturb public opinions.”

The arrest of Saleh Mola-Abbasi took place at his residence in Ahar on October 9, 2022, by security forces. After spending approximately one month in Tabriz Prison, he was released on bail with 1.2 billion tomans. On July 10, 2023, the court session was convened, leading to his sentencing.

It is pertinent to mention that Mola-Abbasi has a history of previous arrests and convictions linked to his activism.
