Mohammad Taleghani Sentenced to Imprisonment and Social Restrictions

Mohammad Taleghani, a former member of Imam Ali’s Popular Students Relief Society, has been handed a two-year prison sentence and imposed social restrictions by the Tehran Revolutionary Court. However, the execution of this verdict has been suspended for a period of five years.

Judge Iman Afshari issued the verdict, citing “assembly and collusion against national security” as the reason for Taleghani’s sentence. In addition to the prison term, Taleghani has been banned from leaving the country and prohibited from using social media, as well as being barred from participating in civil and political activities for a duration of five years.

Taleghani’s arrest took place on July 9, 2023, when the intelligence forces of the IRGC apprehended him at his residence in Tehran. After spending eight days in custody, he was released on bail from Evin Prison.

Former Political Prisoner Reza Mohammad Hosseini Arrested

HRANA, Human Rights Activists news agency–On May 1, 2023, formers political prisoner Reza Mohammad Hosseini was arrested by security forces and taken to an undisclosed location.

According to an informed source close to his family who spoke with HRANA, the arrest was made by IRGC Intelligence agents, who also confiscated his personal social media page.

On February 15, 2023, Mohammad Hosseini was set free from Rajai Shahr prison under the “pardon and commutation” directive.

Mohammad Hosseini has other arrests and convictions for his activism.

The reason for his current arrest, his whereabouts, and the allegations against him are currently unknown.

 Imprisoned British-Iranian National Mehran Raoof: Double Nationals Denied Their Citizen Rights in Iranian Prisons

In an open letter, political prisoner Mehran Raoof sheds light on how he and other political and double national prisoners are denied their fundamental rights in Iranian prisons.

He highlights that governments often use double national prisoners as leverage in negotiations with other countries, so the recent pardon and commutation directive does not include them.

Raoof further speaks out against the violations of his rights during detention, stating that the IRGC intelligence unit held him in detention for eight months without any furlough or access to a lawyer, which is a clear violation of Iranian law. Moreover, for several months, his family was kept in the dark about his condition and whereabouts, and he was not even allowed to contact them.

He ends his letter with these statements:
“This clear discrimination and oppression are not unfamiliar to us, who have lived under the rule of the Islamic Republic for over 40 years. Many of us, including political prisoners, women’s rights activists, environmental activists, and workers’ rights activists are imprisoned on charges of having different beliefs and opinions and protesting against wrong and dictatorial policies and laws. We stand in solidarity with the nationwide protests, demanding the unconditional release of all political prisoners.”

In October 2020, IRGC intelligence agents arrested this 65-year-old British-Iranian national and held him for eight months in a detention facility known as Ward 2A in Evin Prison. Later, he was relocated to Ward 1. In August 2021, Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Iman Afshari, sentenced him to ten years and eight months in prison, which was later reduced to seven years and six months.

Sunni Hossein Askani Arrested in Rask

On April 2, 2023, security forces arrested Sunni citizen Hossein Askani in Rask and took him to an undisclosed location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on April 2, quoting the Baloch Activists Campaign, Hossein Askani was arrested in Rask, Sistan and Baluchestan Province.

20-year-old Askani reportedly was apprehended by IRGC forces while returning from a religious school along with several other students.

The report speculates that his arrest is related to his activities in the religious group Tablighi Jamaat. (Society of Preachers)

Askani’s detained location is still unknown.

Former Political Prisoner Khosro Rahnama Arrested in Tehran

Yesterday, March 12, 2023, security forces arrested former political prisoner Khosro Rahnama at his home in Tehran. The agents searched his house and confiscated some of his belonging.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on March 12, 2023, former political prisoner Khosro Rahnama was arrested in Tehran.

An informed source told HRANA, “Around 2:30 AM, about ten intelligence agents raided Rahnama’s house, arrested him, searched the house and confiscated some of his belonging and his family’s.”

“Following frequent inquiries, his family was told that he was not transferred to the prison and is likely held in an IRGC detention facility,” he added.

Rahnama, age 63, faced other arrests and convictions on prior occasions. The last time, the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced him to five years imprisonment and two years in exile for “propaganda against the regime” and “assembly and collusion against national security in collaboration with anti-regime groups.”

On August 28, 2022, Rahnama was jailed in Evin Prison for sentencing. In October 2022, he was released on 500-million-toman bail.

Yarsan Follower Kaveh Salimi Arrested

On March 5, 2023, security forces arrested Kaveh Salimi at his home in Kermanshah and took her to an undisclosed location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kurdpa, on March 5, 2023, Kaveh Salimi, a follower of the Yari religion, was arrested by security forces in Kermanshah.

The agents reportedly searched his house and confiscated some of his belongings.
In recent weeks, Salimi was summoned via phone to IRGC’s intelligence office and interrogated.
The reason for his arrest and whereabouts are still unknown.

Yarsanism, Ahl-e Haqq is a syncretic religion founded by Sultan Sahak in the late 14th century in western Iran. As a religious minority, Yarsan followers are subjected to intimidation and prosecution by regime security and judicial systems.

 

Five-Year Sentence against Faezeh Hashemi Rafsanjani Upheld on Appeal

The Tehran Court of Appeals sentenced political activist Faezeh Hashemi Rafsanjani to five years in prison and banned her from leaving the country.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Faezeh Hashemi Rafsanjani was sentenced to five years in prison.

Attorney at law Mohammad Hossein Aghasi informed the public that Rafsanjani’s sentence was upheld on appeals.

On September 27, 2022, security forces arrested Rafsanjani in Tehran. IRGC-affiliated Fars News Agency claimed she was arrested for participating in nationwide protests.

Rafsanjani, a former parliament member and daughter of the former president, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, faced other arrests and convictions on prior occasions.

Five Cross-Border Fuel Carrier (Sookhtbar) Killed by IRGC Forces

On February 7, IRGC forces killed at least five cross-border fuel carriers (Sookhtbar) by shooting in Iranshahr, Sistan and Baluchestan Province.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting the Baloch Activist Campaign, at least five individuals carrying fuel across the border were killed by IRGC forces in Iranshahr.

The IRGC forces reportedly began shooting at their vehicle without any warning, setting the car ablaze, and five people died.
The victims’ identities are unknown at the time of writing.

According to HRANA’s annual report, in 2022, a total of 845 people were shot by military forces. At least 571 of the victims lost their life.

This includes 22 kolbars, 9 fuel carriers, and 540 civilians. 274 people were injured by military forces open fire, including 134 kolbars, 128 civilians, and 12 fuel carriers.

Faezeh Modares Gorji Arrested in Sanadaj

Wednesday, January 18, in Sanandaj, Faezeh Modares Gorji was arrested by security forces at the annual commemoration ceremony for two victims of the Ukraine Plane Crash. She was taken to an undisclosed location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on January 18, 2023, Faezeh Modares Gorji was arbitrarily arrested in Sanandaj.

Her daughter, Jina Modares Gorji, who also was previously arrested at nationwide protests, stated: “My mother was arrested at the police station when she went to inquire about the impoundment of her vehicle license plate by the police at the annual ceremony. She was arrested for attending the annual ceremony of Aida Farzaneh and Arvin Morattab, two victims of the Ukraine plane crash.”

The location where Gorji is held and the allegations against her are still unknown.

On January 8, 2020, the Ukraine International Airlines flight 752 crashed shortly after takeoff from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport, killing all 176 people onboard. After three days of unsuccessful cover-up, on January 11, 2020, Iran authorities officially admitted that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) unintentionally shot down this Ukrainian airliner in Tehran.

Workers’ Rights Activist Maziar Seyednejad Sentenced to Three Years in Prison

The Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced workers’ rights activist Maziar Seyednejad to three years in prison and additional punishments.

According to this verdict, Seyednejad received two years for “membership in Communist groups” and one year for “propaganda against the regime.” He is also banned from leaving the country for two years and from membership in political groups and social activities on the Internet.

If the verdict is upheld on appeal, based on Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, two years in prison for the first count will be enforceable.
Taking his previous three-year sentence into account, he has to serve five years in prison.

On June 7, 2021, security forces arrested Seyednejad at his home in Tehran and took him to IRGC’s detention facility in Evin Prison, known as Ward 2-A. On August 16, 2021, he was released on 600-million-toman bail until the end of legal proceedings.
Seyednejad faced other arrests and convictions on prior occasions for his civil activities.
