Poet and Workers’ Rights Activist Peyman Farhangian Sentenced to One Year in Prison Alongside Additional Penalties

Peyman Farhangian, a poet and workers’ rights activist, has been handed a one-year prison sentence by the Criminal Court of Astaneh-ye Ashrafiyeh. This ruling also encompasses a travel ban and other social restrictions.

The court has deemed Farhangian guilty of “propaganda against the regime.” In addition to the prison term, he faces a mandatory two-year residency requirement in Zabol, a two-year prohibition from leaving the country, and the mandate to delete his Instagram account.

The initial verdict, issued on September 23, 2020, under the jurisdiction of Judge Seyed-Sadegh Hosseini, amounted to a staggering 38-year prison term. However, a significant development occurred on May 15, 2021, when the Court of Appeals in Gilan Province lessened the sentence to a decade behind bars. Seven years of this revised sentence remained suspended for a period of five years.

Following his conviction, Farhangian was incarcerated in Lahijan, located in Gilan Province, on May 16, 2022, marking the commencement of his imprisonment. Subsequently, he was granted provisional release in December 2022.

Four Inmates Executed in Qom, Babol, Zahedan, and Imminent Execution Awaited in Zabol

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on July 30, an inmate identified as Hamid Asgarinia, convicted of rape, was executed in Qom Prison.

Also, the Chief Justice of Qom province, citing from Fars News Agency, announced the execution of another inmate for rape in this prison took place in the last ten days.

According to Haal Vsh, on July 30, in Zahedan Prison, Baydollah Gorgij, 43, met a tragic fate as he was executed for drug-related crimes. In Babol Prison, Mohammad Arbab, 30, an Afghan national, also was hanged due to the same charges. Both executions took place without prior notice to their families, depriving them of a final visitation.

Adding to the alarming situation, Asadollah Amini, 32, another Afghan national, has been transferred to solitary confinement in Zabol Prison, where he awaits an imminent execution for drug-related crimes.

In 2022, the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists in Iran registered 457 reports related to the death penalty. This included 92 death sentences, including the conviction of 6 people to public execution and 565 execution sentences were carried out, 2 of which have been carried out in public. Based on the announced identifications of some of the executed individuals, 501 were male and 11 were female. In addition, 5 juvenile offenders were executed in 2022, meaning they were under the age of 18 at the time they committed the crime.

 

 

 

 

Inmate Executed in Ghayen Prison on Drug-Related Charges

On Monday morning, October 11, 2021, an inmate who had previously been sentenced to death on drug-related charges was executed in Ghayen Prison.

According to HRANA, quoting The Baloch Activists Campaign, the inmate has been identified as Ibrahim Rakhshani, a native of Zabol.

According to the last report of the Statistics and Publication Center of the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA), between October 8 of 2020 and October 9 of 2021, at least 266 citizens were executed and 90 citizens were sentenced to death.

As the report points out, Iran’s judicial authorities do not publicly announce over 82% of carried-out executions, dubbed as “secret executions” by human rights organizations.

This execution has not been announced by official sources in Iran as of this writing.

Inmate Hanged in Birjand Prison on Drug-Related Charges

Earlier this Monday, October 11, an inmate was executed in Birjand Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Omid Sarani, a native of Zabol, had previously been sentenced to death on drug-related charges.

According to the last report of the Statistics and Publication Center of the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA), between October 8 of 2020 and October 9 of 2021, at least 266 citizens were executed and 90 citizens were awarded death sentence.

As the report points out, Iran’s judicial authorities do not publicly announce over 82% of carried-out executions, dubbed as “secret executions” by human rights organizations.

Sarani’s execution has not been announced by official sources in Iran as of this writing.

Arjang Davoodi Transferred to Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj in Eighteenth Year of Imprisonment

Last week, 69-year-old political prisoner Arjang Davoodi was transferred from Zahedan Prison in Sistan and Baluchestan Province to the Greater Tehran Penitentiary and then to Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, in 2016  Mr. Davoodi was transferred to Zabol and then Zahedan Prisons in Sistan and Baluchestan Province to serve his sentence in exile.

Davoodi is currently serving his 18th year in prison.
