Teachers Union Activist Masoud Farhikhteh Sentenced

The Criminal Court of Tehran has sentenced Masoud Farhikhteh, a member of the Islamshahr Teachers Trade Association, to one year imprisonment and 74 lashes, which was suspended for two years.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting the Coordination Council of Iranian Teachers’ Trade Associations, Masoud Farhikhteh was sentenced to one year suspended prison sentence and flagellation on the charge of “disturbing public order.”

In the trial, participation in “illegal gatherings” was presented as evidence to support the above-mentioned charge.

On Thursday, May 13, 2022, during the teachers’ protests in various cities in Iran, several protestors including Farhikhteh were arrested. On June 8, Farhikhteh was released on bail until the end of legal proceedings.

Woman in Coma in Custody by Hejab Enforcement Causes Uproar in Iran

Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who was visiting Tehran from the Kurdistan region was hospitalized due to brain and heart stroke when she was in the custody of Tehran’s Morality Police. The police took her into custody for what they deemed improper hejab. In response to the widespread public reaction on social media, the Greater Tehran police chief claimed that Amini was taken to a police station where during an educational class, she suddenly had a heart attack.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists,  Amini was hospitalized after being assaulted and apprehended by Tehran’s Morality Police.

An informed source told HRANA that Amini is  22 years old and a resident of Saqqez. She had travelled to Tehran with her family to visit a relative. A few days ago, while she and her brother were passing through a street, she was stopped by the Morality Police. They beat her and took her to Vozara Police Station. They told her brother that she would be released after one hour. The police, however, beat her again in the police station and after a few hours, transferred her from the police station to a hospital.

Kurdpa has reported that Amini has undergone a grade 3 concussion and is in a coma. 

In recent months, Tehran’s Morality Police has increased their activities in the streets. 

Rahman Ghaderi Sentenced to Three Years and Three Months

The Piranshahr Revolutionary Court has sentenced Rahman Ghaderi to three years and three months in prison. If the verdict is upheld on appeal, based on Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, two years and seven and a half months imprisonment will be enforceable.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kurdpa, Rahman Ghaderi, a resident of Piranshahr, was sentenced to three years and three months in prison.

According to the verdict, Ghaderi has been sentenced to two years and seven and a half months in prison on the charge of “collaboration with an anti-regime political party”, and seven and a half months for “propaganda against the regime.”

On February 13, 2022, security forces arrested Ghaderi without showing a warrant and took him to a detention facility in Urmia. At the end of the interrogation process, he was relocated to Naqadeh Prison. On March 12, 2022, he was released on bail.

Several Individuals Arrested in Maku County

In Maku, West Azerbaijan Province, the Ministry of Intelligence summoned and arrested several individuals following a protest against government negligence to revive the Urmia Lake, which has been completely dried up.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, in recent days, several individuals were arrested by the Ministry of Intelligence due to their environmental activism for Urmia Lake.

HRANA has identified one of these individuals as Aydin Jafari, age 19, whose condition and whereabouts are unknown so far.

On September 11, 2022, several Maku residents and environmentalists staged a protest to demand actions to rescue Urmia Lake.

The charges against these individuals are still unknown.

Families of Prisoners Arrested for Protesting Executions

During the recent protest of death-row prisoners’ families in Tehran, the police arrested several individuals. Some sources have reported that up to 30 protestors have been arrested. The reports obtained by HRANA confirm that currently, eight individuals are held in detention.

According to the latest information obtained by HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, eight protestors are still in custody at the time of this writing.

According to HRANA, the police arrested several protestors during a gathering of the families of prisoners who are currently on death row.

On September 11, 2022,  these family members gathered before the headquarters of the Judiciary in Tehran to continue the protests against the execution. The police cracked down on this gathering and arrested several protestors.

Hossein Shalibavi and Amir Daftarian Arrested

On September 11, 2022, in Shadegan, Khuzestan Province, intelligence agents arrested Hossein Shalibavi and transferred him to an unidentified location. They also arrested Amir Daftarian in Abadan on September 9. Both individuals’ houses were searched during the arrest.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Hossein Shalibavi and Amir Daftarian were arrested in Shadegan and Abadan.

Agents arrested Daftarian at his office in the fire station and took him to the Ministry of Intelligence office.

Shalibavi had faced other arrests on prior occasions. On April 9, 2020, the security forces detained him for one month and then released him on bail.

The reasons for these arrests and the charges are unknown so far.

Several Protestors against Water Shortages Arrested in Hamedan

Hamedan’s governor announced the arrest of 25 individuals during the recent protests against water shortages in Hamedan.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Entekhab News, 25 were arrested during the recent demonstrations in Hamedan.

Calling three last protests unlawful and the protestors the enemy of the state, Hamedan’s governor, Mohammad-Ali Mohammadi claimed, “25 people were arrested, of which 20 were not the residents of Hamedan, coming from other areas to cause a disturbance, fear and unrest.”

In recent days, the residents of Hamedan demonstrated several times against the drinking water shortages. The water transfer project was attributed as the cause, which is still ongoing. 

During the protest on August 24, the police mistreated a woman, which sparked an outcry on social media.

 

Urmia Revolutionary Court has sentenced Zahra Sedighi Hamedani and Elham Choobdar to death

The Revolutionary Court of Urmia sentenced Zahra Sedighi Hamedani and Elham Choobdar to death. The Media Center for Iran’s Judiciary cited the reason as “spreading corruption on earth through trafficking women to the Kurdistan region of Iraq.” However, many have expressed concern that the two were #LGBTQ+ advocates and the sentencing may be related to their sexual orientation.

According to HRANA, the Human Rights Activists news agency, the Revolutionary Court of Urmia has issued a death sentence for Zahra Sedighi Hamedani and Elham Choobdar.

The Media Center for Iran’s Judiciary announced that these individuals have “deceived and trafficked women to one of the countries in the region by promising them education and jobs, and in some cases, young women have committed suicide.”

Sedighi was in Iraq’s Kurdistan region but was arrested on her way to Turkey when part of her trip led her to cross Iran’s territory.

On November 6, 2021, the IRGC announced the arrest of (Zahra Sedighi Hamedani) as ahead of a network that was trafficking women to a country to spread prostitution with the support of Homosexual groups and foreign intelligence services.” some LGBTQ+ activists denied such accusations and attributed the arrest to the individual’s sexual orientation and advocacy work.

IRGC-affiliated Tasnim News has also brought such accusations against Zahra Sedighi Hamedani, including gambling, fraud, promotion of homosexuality, illegitimate sexual relationships, and publishing on social media. Tasnim also revealed the identity of two other defendants, Alireza Farjadi-Kia and a woman identified with the first name Kati.

In February of 2022, Amnesty International recognized Sedighi as an LGBTQ+ rights activist and warned about her execution for promoting homosexuality and Christianity.

However, until now, no part of the case documents, including the pleadings or the workflow of the case, or any comments from any of the above sources, including the lawyers of the case, have been published.

Three Individuals Arrested in Aban Protests Sentenced to Five Years Each

The Revolutionary Court of Tehran has sentenced Amir-Hossein Moradi, Saeed Tamjidi, and Mohammad Rajabi to five years in prison in a retrial and after the revocation of their death sentence. These individuals were arrested during nationwide protests in 2019.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Amir-Hossein Moradi, Saeed Tamjidi, and Mohammad Rajabi were each sentenced to five years in prison.

On June 24, 2020, the Supreme Court of Iran announced that these individuals received the death sentence and a total of 38 years in prison and 222 lashes. This verdict sparked an international outcry when the hashtag #DontExecute began trending and then-US President Donald Trump and human rights organizations condemned it.

In November of 2019, an increase in fuel prices sparked a wave of protests in dozens of cities across the country. The spokesperson of the Parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, Seyed Hossein Taghavi, announced that 7000 people were arrested during these protests. According to reports from human rights organizations, hundreds were killed by the security apparatus.

Masoud Vazifeh Arrested in Shahr-e-Rey

On September 4, 2022, security forces arrested former political prisoner Masoud Vazifeh and transferred him to an unidentified location.

The reason for his arrest and the charges are unknown so far.

Last year, the Revolutionary Court of Shahriar sentenced Vazifeh to six months in prison on the charge of “propaganda against the regime”. He served his sentence in the Great Tehran Penitentiary.
