Annual Report on Execution in Iran – 2016

HRANA – On the anniversary of the World Day Against the Death Penalty, The Department of Statistics and Publications of the Human Rights Activists in Iran publishes an annual report on executions in Iran. This report is intended to provide visibility to the dire situation where thousands of people are awaiting execution. The present report concerns the individuals executed in the one year period from 10 October 2015 until the beginning of October 2016 and refers to at least 504 people executed in different parts of Iran by hanging. The report shows a decrease by about 38% in the number of executions compared to the same period last year. Most of these individuals had been condemned to death in unfair courts and deprived of access to lawyers. Moreover, this report shall not be considered an accurate and comprehensive estimate since the Iranian government has placed enormous restrictions on human rights related activities and independent human right organizations.

Since October 10th, 2015 to the beginning of October, 2016, this organization published 298 reports regarding the executions in Iran. These reports include a total of 588-execution decrees out of which 504 individuals have been already executed. Out of the 504 executions, a total of 39 people were executed in public. Among the victims whose identity has been established, there were 9 women, and the age of 4 individuals was under 18 years at the time they committed the alleged crimes.

In comparison with the number of executions in the same period last year, there has been a 38% decrease in the number of executions but also a 12% increase in the number of execution decrees. The number of public executions has fallen by 30% over the same period, and execution of women has also shown a 19% decline.

According to this report, 57% of the executions were related to the charges of drug trafficking, 26% for murder, 6% for rape, 7% for political charges, and 4% for miscellaneous cases.

The following pie chart illustrates the number of executions in different provinces of Iran. This graph shows that the province of Alborz with three most populated prisons and 29% executions comes in the 1st place, and provinces of West Azerbaijan and Hormozgan with 10% and 8% are in the 2nd and 3rd places, respectively.

According to this report, the number of public executions has been 8% of the total number of executions as shown in the following figure.

The following graph shows the number of executions reported by independent human rights organizations, which is estimated to be 61% of the executions carried out covertly.

2 Prisoners Executed in Khorramabad

HRANA News Agency – On November 5, two prisoners were hanged on charge of “trafficking drugs” in Parsilon prison in Khorramabad of Lorestan Province.

At Least 2 Prisoners Executed in Salmas

HRANA News Agency – At least two prisoners with drug related charges were executed in Salmas.

According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), at least two prisoners were hanged in Salmas prison, on November 1st. One prisoner was transferred from Uremia prison to Salmas. At Least 3 Prisoners Executed in Mashhad

Number of Executed Prisoners in Ghezelhesar Prison Rose to 12

HRANA News Agency – With authentication of the identity of another inmate who was executed at Ghezelhesar prison in Karaj, the number of victims rose to 12. Lack of communication with other prisoners and families of prisoners and holding him in the ward of prisoners with mental problems, is one of the reasons for the delay in identifying the prisoner who was executed.

According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran (HRANA), with authentication of the identity of a prisoner who was executed, the number of executed prisoners on Wednesday, October 19 in Ghezelhesar prison in Karaj rose to 12 prisoners. This is while the judiciary and parliament members have continuously talked about their plans for reduction of execution for prisoners with drug related charges. At Least 11 Prisoners Executed in Ghezelhesar Prison / Additional Information

HRANA News Agency – The identity of another executed prisoner was confirmed by HRANA, and the number of confirmed executions reached to 11. This is while the judiciary and parliament members have continuously talked about their plans for reduction of execution for prisoners with drug related charges.

Arrested Participants of Reyhaneh Jabbari’s Memorial Released

HRANA News Agency – All of the people who had been arrested by security forces during the memorial of Reyhaneh Jabbari, in Behsht-e-Zahra, were released. Previously HRANA had reported that security forces had used violence and broken many of the provided equipment for the ceremony, dismantled the platform and gathered the chairs and told the guests to leave.

According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), plainclothes forces with the support of security police intervened and stopped the anniversary of Reyhaneh Jabbari’s execution to be held on her tomb, and arrested Sholeh Pakravan, Mohammad Nourizad and some of the attendees. Participants in Reyhaneh Jabbari’s Execution’s Anniversary Arrested

HRANA News Agency – Sholeh Pakravan, Mohammad Noorizad and several other participants in the anniversary of execution of Reyhaneh Jabbari were arrested by the security forces and the ceremony was stopped.

According to the report of the Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran (HRANA), plainclothes forces along with security police forces prevented the ceremony of the anniversary Reyhaneh Jabbari’s execution at her grave.
