Supreme Court Upholds Death Sentence of Man Charged with Murder

Branch 28 of the Supreme Court recently upheld the death sentence of a man named Shahram.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Shargh Newspaper, Shahram had previously been sentenced to death by the Eighth Branch of Tehran’s First Criminal Court on a charge of murder.

Iran ranks first in the world in citizen executions per capita, according to international organizations. The Statistics and Publication Center of the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA) reported that between January 1 and December 20 of 2020, at least 236 citizens were executed.

One of these citizens was executed publicly, and two were juvenile offenders. An additional 95 citizens were sentenced to death. According to the same report, more than 72% of executions in Iran are not reported by the government or the judiciary, which human rights organizations call “secret” executions.

Bakhtiar Salemi Executed in Shirvan Prison

At dawn on Sunday, July 25, a prisoner named Bakhtiar Salemi from Hashtrood, who had previously been sentenced to death for murder, was executed in Shirvan Prison in North Khorasan Province.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting the Iran Human Rights (IHR), Salemi had previously been sentenced to death on a charge of murder. But, according to an informed source, he claimed innocence for the entirety of his imprisonment.

“Bakhtiar had two children and had been in prison for four years,” the report quoted the source as saying. “He had repeatedly insisted on his innocence and that another citizen who took refuge in Turkey was the main perpetrator”

Inmates Babak Aslani and Mohsen Isfahani Executed in Urmia Prison

On Sunday, July 18, two prisoners who had previously been sentenced to death for murder were executed in Urmia Prison in West Azerbaijan Province.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, the prisoners have been identified as Babak Aslani and Mohsen Isfahani.

Citizen Sentenced to Death under Qisas (Eye-for-an-Eye) Principle of Shariah Law

A citizen was recently sentenced to death under the Qisas (roughly translated as eye-for-an-eye) principle of Shariah Law.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), the citizen was sentenced after confessing to the murder of two park rangers in Zanjan.

Hossein Absalan, Director-General of the Department of Environmental in Zanjan Province, said, “The accused in the murder of two park rangers has been sentenced to death by a verdict issued by the judge.”

Absalan further stated, “Based on the evidence, according to the Iranian Police Criminal Investigation Department of Zanjan, given the explicit confession of the arrested defendant to the murder of the two rangers, the judge has sentenced the defendant to death under Qisas.”

Citizen Sentenced to Public Execution in Zahedan

A prisoner in Zahedan was recently sentenced to execution in public.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Rokna News, the prisoner was arrested for the murder of his wife and two of his wife’s relatives in Zahedan.

The Public Prosecutor of Sistan and Baluchestan Province said, “A death sentence has been issued for an angry groom who killed a number of his wife’s family members, and if approved by the Supreme Court, he will be executed soon.”
