Iran Protests: Mehdi Dastani Sentenced to Imprisonment and Flogging

The Yazd Criminal Court sentenced teacher Mehdi Dastani, arrested at the 2022 nationwide protests, to one year in prison and 74 lashes, a ban from leaving the country and termination of service as a teacher.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Medi Dastani, a teacher and resident of Yazd, was sentenced to one year in prison and flogging.

Dastani received this verdict for “disturbing public order by creating traffic on the street and accompanying troublemakers.” This verdict was upheld on appeal.

An informed source told HRANA, “last March, Dastani was summoned to endure flogging and start serving his sentence.”

“He was acquitted from other charges due to the lack of evidence,” the source added.

On September 28, 2022, Dastani was arrested at nationwide protests by security forces in Yazd and released after three days on 700-million-toman bail.

The Kermanshah Revolutionary Court sentenced Sina Kaki to seven months and additional punishments. Kaki was previously arrested during the 2022 nationwide protests.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, 24-year-old Sina Kaki, arrested during the 2022 nationwide protests in Kermanshah, was sentenced to seven months for allegedly “propaganda against the regime.”

Kaki was also banned from leaving the country and from membership in political and civil groups for two years.

On November 21, 2022, security forces arrested Kaki over protests. Five days later, he was released on bail. On December 27, 2022, Kaki was re-arrested in Kermanshah and jailed in Dizelabad prison.

The Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced Behnaz Jamalzadeh, a student at the Islamic Azad University, to one year in prison. She was arrested amid the 2022 nationwide protests.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, student Behnaz Jamalzadeh, arrested amid nationwide protests, was sentenced to one year in prison for allegedly “propaganda against the regime.”

On November 26, 2022, Jamalzadeh was arrested by security forces at her house. On January 23, 2023, she was released from Ward 209 of Evin Prison on bail.

The Oshnavieh Criminal Court sentenced Ayoub Aghaliani to ten and a half years and 70 lashes.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kurpda, Ayoub Aghaliani was sentenced to imprisonment and flogging.

Aghaliani received four years for “assembly and collusion against national security,” one year and 70 lashes for “breaching public order and peace,” one and a half years for “destruction of public property,” and four years for “participating in setting fire to public properties.” Applying Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, four years in prison for one charge is enforceable.

Additionally, last month, he received one year and five months from the Urmia Criminal Court for “destruction of public properties and breach of public order and peace.”

Aghaliani, age 22, was arrested by security forces on October 7, 2022, and jailed in Urmia Prison. During detention, he reportedly had family visitation only once and the court granted him a high bail of 1.3 billion Tomans.

Iran Protests: Behrooz Izadi Rad Sentenced to Imprisonment

The Revolutionary Court sentenced Behrooz Izadi Rad, arrested amid nationwide protests, to four years and one month in prison. After pleading no contest, his sentence was reduced to two years and ten months.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Behrooz Izadi Rad was sentenced to imprisonment.

According to this verdict issued by the Revolutionary Court of Aliabad-e Katul, Golestan Province, Izadi Rad received four years and one month. Since he pleaded no contest, his sentence was reduced to nine months for “propaganda against the regime” and 25 months for “inciting people to unrest,” in total, two years and ten months, detention period included.

On December 19, 2022, Izadi Rad was summoned to the court to defend himself against the accusations.

In September 2022, security forces arrested Izadi Rad in Golestan Prison and, after a while, jailed him in Amirabad Prison in Gorgan.

Iran Protests: Babak Moradifar Sentenced to Four Years and Three Months

The Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced political activist Babak Moradifar to four years and three months.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Babak Moradifar, arrested at recent nationwide protests, was sentenced to imprisonment.

According to the verdict issued on March 1, 2023, Moradifar was sentenced to three years for “assembly and collusion against national security” and one year and three months for “propaganda against the regime.”
If the verdict is upheld on appeal, based on Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, three years for the first charge will be enforceable.
 
On October 8, 2022, security forces arrested Moradifar at nationwide protests and took him to Ward 240 of Evin Prison in Tehran. On November 28, he was released on bail until the end of legal proceedings.

Pouria Mousavipour Sentenced to Imprisonment and Flogging

The Court of Appeals of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province sentenced Pouria Mousavipour, a resident of Yasuj, to one year, 74 lashes, and paying a fine.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Pouria Mousavipour was sentenced to one year and 74 lashes for “disturbing public order and peace by setting a car tire on fire in the street.” He was also fined 23 million tomans.

On September 26, 2022, Mousavipour was arrested by security forces amid nationwide protests in Yasuj, and after a month was released on bail.

The Revolutionary and Criminal Courts of Khorramabad sentenced Ghasem Fazelikia, age 31, arrested at recent nationwide protests, to two years and 74 lashes.

The Khorramabad Revolutionary Court sentenced Fazelikia to one year for “propaganda against the regime.” Moreover, the Criminal Court of this city sentenced him to one year and 74 lashes for “disturbing public order.”

In September 2022, IRGC intelligence agents arrested Fazelikia. He was released on bail on October 22.

Also, earlier in November 2019, he was arrested by security forces, but on trial, he was acquitted of the charges.

 

Iran Protests: Neda Faragari Jailed in Amol Prison

Neda Faragari, arrested at recent nationwide protests, is currently jailed in Amol Prison, Mazandaran Province. The Amol Revolutionary Court has sentenced her to two years in prison and paying a fine.

December 22, 2022, she was sentenced to two years in prison for “assembly and collusion against national security,” paying a fine for “propaganda against the regime,” and “insulting the Supreme Leader of Iran.”

On trial, chanting slogans such as “death to the dictator” at a commemoration ceremony on the 40th day of Ghazaleh Chalabi, one of the protestors killed by the regime forces at protests, was presented as an example of the charge of “insulting the Supreme Leader.” Faragari was arrested at the commemoration ceremony for Ghazaleh Chalabi on November 3, 2022, in Amol.

According to reports obtained by HRANA, her attendance and others at this ceremony were interpreted by the court as an act to conspire against national security (mentioned as ‘chain collusion’), pre-coordinated based on a “shared goal rather than by a leader.”

 

Iran Protests: Ali Bahrampour Sentenced to over Eight Years

The Revolutionary and Criminal Courts of Qazvin sentenced Ali Bahrampour, a resident of Tehran, to eight years and four months in prison. The court also banned him from leaving the country for two years and ordered the seizure of his cell phone.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, writer and translator Ali Bahrampour was sentenced to eight years and four months in prison and additional punishments.

Bahrampour received five years for “inciting people to commit murder and wage war against national security,” two years for “insulting the Supreme Leader of Iran,” and one year for “propaganda against the regime.” For the second part of his legal case, the Criminal Court sentenced him to four months for “spreading falsehood.”

If the verdict is upheld on appeal, based on Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, five years in prison for the first count, as the severest punishment, will be enforceable.
On November 3, 2022, Bahrampour was arrested amid nationwide protests. He was released on bail after 78 days of detention.

Since the beginning of nationwide protests, over 19620 people, including journalists, artists, lawyers, teachers, students and civil rights activists, have been arrested. So far, over protests, at least 775 people have been sentenced to a total of about 13969 months imprisonment.
