Baha’i Citizen Sahba Mohammadi Arrested in Birjand

HRANA News Agency – On Saturday, June 28, security agents from the Ministry of Intelligence arrested Sahba Mohammadi, a Baha’i citizen residing in Birjand, at her home and transferred her to an undisclosed location. Authorities also confiscated some of her personal and electronic belongings.

According to information received by HRANA, agents arrested Ms. Mohammadi around 7 a.m. on Saturday at her residence. During the raid, they searched her home and seized several personal items, including her mobile phone, laptop, and Baha’i literature.

As of the time of this report, the reasons for her arrest, her whereabouts, and the charges against her remain unknown.

Sahba Mohammadi is 25 years old and resides in Birjand.

Over the past decade, the Iranian Bahá’í community has been disproportionately targeted by Iran’s security forces and judiciary—more than any other minority group. In the past three years, an average of 72 percent of the reports on religious rights violations collected by HRANA have documented the Iranian regime’s repression of the Bahá’í community.

Two Prisoners Executed in Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan

HRANA News Agency – At dawn on Monday, June 2, two prisoners who had previously been sentenced to death in a joint case on drug-related charges were executed in Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan.

The identities of the prisoners have been reported by Iran Human Rights as Habib Almasi, approximately 35 years old and father of two children, and Jabrail Hashemzadeh, 30 years old, both residents of Birjand.

According to the report, the two prisoners, who were related (maternal and paternal cousins), were arrested four years ago in a joint case on drug-related charges and were subsequently sentenced to death by the judiciary.

As of the time of this report, the execution of these individuals has not been officially announced by prison authorities or relevant institutions.

According to HRANA’s statistics, in 2024, 61 inmates were hanged in Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan — a 74% increase compared to the previous year. This sharp rise reflects a disturbing escalation in executions at this facility.

Execution of Nine Prisoners, Including Three Women, in Birjand and Kahnuj Prisons

HRANA News Agency – Nine prisoners, including three women who had previously been sentenced to death on drug-related charges, were executed in Birjand and Kahnuj prisons.

According to HRANA, citing Haal Vsh, at dawn on Monday, May 26, 2025, at least eight prisoners — including three women — were executed in Birjand Prison, South Khorasan province.

One of the individuals has been identified as Hamid Shirzayi, also known as Amanollah, 39 years old, father of 10 children, originally from Zahedan and residing in Gorgan.

Mr. Shirzayi had reportedly informed his family in a phone call on Sunday, May 25, of his transfer to solitary confinement. He was arrested in 2019 on drug-related charges and later sentenced to death by the Birjand Revolutionary Court.

Additionally, according to the Baloch Activists Campaign, on Sunday, May 25, a prisoner identified as Mahmoud Shirvani was hanged in Kahnuj Prison, Kerman province.

The identities and charges of the other executed prisoners have not been mentioned in the reports.

As of the time of this report, prison officials and relevant authorities have not officially announced the executions. According to HRANA reports, in 2024, only 6% of executions were announced by official bodies or domestic media outlets.

In 2024, Iranian prisons witnessed the execution of 930 inmates. According to HRANA’s data, the number of executions carried out by the Iranian regime’s judiciary has risen steadily over the past five years. The percentage of executions related to drug charges has also increased year after year.

Four Prisoners Executed in Different Prisons Across Iran

In recent days, four prisoners were executed in prisons in Kermanshah, Urmia, Shiraz, and Birjand on charges related to murder and drug offenses.

At dawn on Saturday, December 21, Hamid Moradian, a resident of Firuzabad, Lorestan, was hanged in Kermanshah Prison. According to information obtained by HRANA, Mr. Moradian had previously been arrested on murder charges and sentenced to death by judicial authorities.

On Monday, December 23, a prisoner convicted of drug-related offenses was executed in Urmia Prison following a Revolutionary Court ruling. HRANA has identified the individual as Loghman Shangeh, a resident of Naqadeh.

Today, December 24, HRANA reported that “Amin Farahmand” was executed in Adelabad Prison, Shiraz, on drug-related charges.

Finally, Haal Vsh reported today the execution of 28-year-old Davood Ghaljaie, a father of one, in Birjand Prison. He was arrested in 2019 on drug-related charges and later sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court of Birjand. According to the report, his execution was carried out without a final family visit.

As of the time of this report, none of these executions have been officially announced by prison authorities or relevant officials.

According to latest HRANA’s annual report over between October 10, 2023, and October 8, 2024, at least 811 individuals were executed by hanging in Iran, rising to 23.06% compared to the same period last year. Of these executions, four were carried out in public. Many of the defendants were denied a fair trial.

Three Prisoners Executed in Birjand Prison for Drug-Related Charges

At dawn on November 17, three prisoners convicted of drug-related charges were executed in Birjand Prison.

One of the executed individuals has been identified as Parviz Brahui (Barahooie), a resident of Zahedan, according to the Haal Vsh. Kurdpa has identified another as Rahim Faghiri, 34 years old, father of three children.

The three prisoners were transferred to solitary confinement yesterday in preparation for the executions. Ultimately, the executions were carried out without allowing the prisoners a final visit with their families.

As of the time of this report, the executions have not been officially announced by prison authorities or relevant agencies.

The reports from the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists for the year 2023 reveal a concerning prevalence of executions for drug offenses in Iran, constituting 56.4% of the total executions. Seven Prisoners Executed in Birjand Prison for Drug Offenses

Today, Tuesday, July 23rd, the death sentences of seven prisoners, including three women, who had previously been convicted in separate cases on drug-related charges, were carried out in Birjand Prison in South Khorasan province, according to Haal Vsh.

The identities of two of these prisoners have been reported as Amir Hamzeh Barahooie (Brahui) Mojarrad, married with two children, from Zabol and a resident of Fazl Abad in Golestan Province, and Vahid Vahdani, 33 years old, from Bojnord.

According to the report, these seven prisoners had previously been arrested in separate cases on drug-related charges and sentenced to death by the judiciary.

These prisoners were transferred to solitary confinement on the night of Sunday, July 21st, in preparation for the execution.

The report, citing an informed source, stated: “Amir Hamzeh was arrested in 2019 and was later sentenced to death by the Birjand Revolutionary Court. After he appealed the verdict, it was overturned by the Supreme Court and referred to a another court branch, but he was ultimately sentenced to death again.”

Execution in Birjand for Drug Offenses

December 27, Birjand – Haal Vsh reports that Esmaeil Ghader Magham (Brahui), a 32-year-old death-row prisoner convicted of drug offenses, was executed in Birjand Prison, South Khorasan province.

Ghader Magham, originally from Zahedan and a resident of Birjand, was arrested for drug-related crimes four years ago in Nehbandan. He was subsequently sentenced to death by the Birjand Revolutionary Court.

Despite the customary practice of allowing a final family visitation, prison officials executed Ghader Magham without providing him with this opportunity, raising concerns about the adherence to humane practices in the execution process.

At the time of writing, no official sources or domestic media outlets within the country have reported on this execution.

Four Inmates Executed in Birjand for Drug-Related Offenses

On December 3, 2023, the Birjand Prison in South Khorasan province carried out the execution of four individuals convicted of drug-related crimes, as reported by Haal Vsh.

The executed prisoners were identified as Mohammad Naeimi Far (Brahui), 44 years old, Ahmad Shahoo-Zahi, 40 years old, Maziar Narooie (Narui), 31 years old, and Hamid Sarani, 27 years old.

The first three inmates had received death sentences three, four, and five years ago, respectively, while Sarani was sentenced to death 14 months ago by the Birjand Revolutionary Court.

Tragically, these individuals were denied the opportunity for a final visit with their families before the execution.

Seven Executions Carry out Across Various Prisons in Iran

In recent days, seven inmates, including a woman, met their fate through executions carried out in Tabriz, Shiraz, Qom, Birjand, and Zahedan Prisons.

According to the Iran Human Rights Organization, on Tuesday, September 5, Ali Abbas Najari (Najjari), aged 37, was executed in Shiraz’s Adelabad Prison. He had been convicted of murder three years ago.

The Rokna News Agency also reported the execution of an inmate, identified only by his first name, Saeed, aged 34, in Tabriz Prison. He was found guilty of taking a life during a group altercation four years ago.

On Friday, September 8, a female inmate, who had been convicted of murder, was executed in Qom Prison, as reported by the Iran Human Rights Organization.

Furthermore, Haal Vsh reported the execution of Saeed Sanjarani, aged 23, who had been convicted of drug-related crimes in Birjand Prison on September 10. Additionally, three inmates, one of whom was identified as Mohammad Narui (Narooie), aged 27, were executed in Zahedan Prison on September 9. Narui had been convicted of murder three years ago, while the other two were found guilty of murder in a joint case seven years ago.

In 2022, the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists in Iran registered 457 reports related to the death penalty. This included 92 death sentences, including the conviction of 6 people to public execution and 565 execution sentences were carried out, 2 of which have been carried out in public. Based on the announced identifications of some of the executed individuals, 501 were male and 11 were female. In addition, 5 juvenile offenders were executed in 2022, meaning they were under the age of 18 at the time they committed the crime.

 

Two Prisoners Executed for Drug Crimes in Arak and Birjand

On August 1, 2023, in Arak Prison, Ruhollah Azizi, aged 40, was executed after being convicted of drug-related crimes, as reported by Rasank News.

Haal Vsh also reported the execution of an inmate for drug offenses in Birjand Prison on July 31. He has been identified as Rahim Ghiljaei, 46, married, the father of one child. He had been sentenced to death two years prior, and his execution occurred without prior notice to his family, leaving them deprived of a final visitation.

These executions have thrust the issue of capital punishment for drug-related offenses into the spotlight. In 2022, the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists in Iran recorded 457 reports concerning the death penalty. Approximately 43% of these executions were linked to drug-related charges.
