Anisha Asadollahi and Keyvan Mohtadi in Detention for 22 Days

Workers’ rights activist Anisha Asadollahi is still in detention 22 days after she was arrested. Another workers’ rights activist Keyvan Mohtadi is also detained in Ward 209 of Evin Prison. On Monday, May 9, 2022, security forces arrested both at their house.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Anisha Asadollahi and Keyvan Mohtadi have been held in detention for the past 22 days while the charges against them are still unknown.

Last Saturday, Anisha’s Brother, Ali Asadollahi wrote on social media that after three weeks, Anisha was allowed to call her mother and told her that the reasons for the arrest and the charges are still not clear. 

On Monday, May 9, 2022, Anisha Asadollahi and Keyvan Mohtadi were arrested by security forces in their house. Their lawyer, Amir Raisian has been denied so far any access to their case and he was only told that they have been arrested on national security charges.

Anisha Asadollahi and Keyvan Mohtadi had been arrested and convicted before for their civil activities. On May 1, 2019, with many other workers and worker’s rights activists, Anisha Asadollahi was arrested at a gathering for the celebration of international workers’ Day. Subsequently, the Revolutionary Court of Tehran sentenced her to one-year imprisonment (of which six months were suspended) and 74 lashes on the charge of “disturbing the public order”. She was jailed in Evin prison for sentencing on January 4, 2020, and was freed on January 21 of that year.

Anisha Asadollahi is an electrical engineer and a graduate of K. N. Toosi University of Technology. She works as an English teacher.

Report on Protests Following Abadan Building Collapse

In recent days, following the collapse of a building in Abadan in Khuzestan Province which led to the death of 29 people declared so far, hundreds of citizens in Abadan, Ahvaz, Shahin-Shahr, Shahr-e-Rey, Andimeshk and Khorramshahr demonstrated against the government, more specifically on the issues related to corruption, low safety standards, and mismanagement. People protested against authorities and influential individuals whose corruption, incompetency and failure to impose safety standards on the construction contributed to the disaster. They also blamed shortcomings in rescue operations and equipment for such a high death toll.

Metropol Collapse

So far, a number of protestors have been arrested. Anti-riot forces have been present on the scene, turning peaceful protests into a violent showdown.

On Monday, May 23, 2022, 10-story building which was under construction known as Metropol collapsed in the city of Abadan in Khuzestan Province. Dozens of people were killed, injured or trapped in the rubble. The experts of the Abadan Engineering Organization had already warned about the safety deficiencies and announced that for these safety issues, the building should not be inaugurated. Nonetheless, the construction continued.

Although the causes of the collapse have not been investigated yet, many argue that the lack of construction oversight by the municipal officials who are themselves the shareholders of this project led to this disaster.

Moreover, the government’s failure to provide adequate emergency response and proper rescue equipment caused anger and criticism toward the officials. According to some victims’ families and protestors, the officials’ failure to provide the required equipment hindered the debris removal operation, which led to the death of more people who were trapped under rubble. Moreover, the government did not cancel a state-run celebration in a sports stadium, which further angered the populace.

Protests

Initially, people gathered for mourning after the building collapse which turned into the marching in streets and spread to additional cities. In Abadan, Ahvaz, Shahin-Shahr, Shahr Ray, Andimeshk and Khorramshahr, people marched and chanted slogans against the Iranian regime.

On Friday, the protests turned violent in some cities as the police attempted to scatter the crowds with tear gas and pellet guns. Many protestors were beaten in Ahvaz and Shahin-Shahr .

The protests continued on Saturday and Sunday. In Andimeshk, Abadan, Shahr-e-Rey, and Dezful, people marched and chanted “death to the dictator”, “the clerics must go away”, and other anti-regime slogans.

On Sunday, officials in Abadan attempted to hold a supervised mourning gathering. According to reports of eye-witnesses obtained by HRANA, during the gathering, people began to chant anti-regime slogans, did not allow the assigned cleric to finish sermons, and left to march in the streets.

On Friday, Netblocks, a watchdog organization that monitors global access to the internet reported disruption on the internet in Iran. Some local sources have also reported the internet and phone disruption to HRANA. These reports were in Abadan, Ahvaz and Khorramshahr.

Arrests

Dozens of people have been arrested during these protests. So far, HRANA has identified four individuals who were arrested as Ali Fartoosi, Aghil Amoori, Mohammad Fartoosi, and Hamid Fartoosi. These individuals were arrested and transferred to an unidentified location. Also, on Thursday, Karim Aldninawi, an Arab poet and resident of Shush City, was arrested following his criticism of the government in a video post on social media.

Teacher Union Activist Iraj Rahnama Arrested in Shiraz

On Sunday, May 29, 2022, security forces arrested teacher union activist Iraj Rahnama at his house in the city of Shiraz and transferred him to an unidentified location. During the arrest, the agents searched the house and confiscated some of his personal belongings.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting the Coordination Council of Iranian Teachers’ Trade Association, on Sunday, May 29, 2022, teacher union activist Iraj Rahnama was arrested at his house in Shiraz.

The reason for his arrest, the charges and his whereabouts are unknown so far.

Iraj Rahnama is the deputy head of the Teachers’ Trade Association of Fars Province.

Morad Behroozi Convicted for Criticizing Supreme Leader

Recently, Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court of Qazvin sentenced Mohammad-Reza Morad Behroozi to one year in prison. Moreover, his wife, Soori Babai Chegini was summoned to Branch 2 of the Public and Revolutionary Court in Mohammadiyeh County of Qazvin Province.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, in a trial in absentia, Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court of Qazvin, headed by Judge Esmail Amini, sentenced Behroozi to one year in prison on the charge of “offensive statements against the Supreme Leader of Iran.” Additionally, Branch 102 of the Criminal Court of Mohammadiyeh ordered Behroozi to pay a fine in the amount of 10 million tomans.

Beroozi’s wife, Soori Babai Chegini has also been accused of “propaganda against the regime”.

Behroozi was arrested on August 21, 2021, at his house following posting a video on social media in which he criticized the Supreme Leader for banning the foreign Covid-19 vaccines.

Behroozi is a resident of Qazvin and the father of three children. 

Political Prisoner Vahid Bagheri on Nineteenth Day of Hunger Strike

Political prisoner Vahid Bagheri who is currently jailed in the Greater Tehran Central Penitentiary is on the 19th day of hunger strike. Despite his poor health condition,  the prison officials deny his basic demands.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on Saturday, May 28, 2022, Political prisoner Vahid Bagheri is on the 19th day of his hunger strike in the Greater Tehran Central Penitentiary.

On May 10, 2022, Mr Bagheri went on hunger strike in protest against the prison official’s rejection of his request for an early release on probation despite the head of the Judiciary’s agreement.

Earlier, in an open letter, Vahid Bagheri had protested that he is the breadwinner of two families and was imprisoned only for attending a protest.

During the nationwide 2019–2020 Iranian protests known as the Aban Protests, the security forces arrested Bagheri and after a while transferred him from a detention facility to the Greater Tehran Central Penitentiary.

Subsequently, branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran sentenced Bagheri to six years in prison on the charge of “propaganda against the regime and assembly and collusion against national security”. Applying article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, of the two counts, five years in prison for the charge of “assembly and collusion” is enforceable.

Two Inmates Executed in Zabol and Chabahar Prisons

On Saturday, May 28, 2022, one inmate who was convicted of drug-related crimes was executed in Zabol Prison. Also, another inmate convicted of murder was executed in Chabahar Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on Saturday, May 28, 2022, two inmates were executed in Chabahar and Zabol Prisons.

Rasank News has identified the inmate who was executed in Zabol Prison as Nader Gorgij, a resident of the Zahak County of Sistan and Baluchestan Province. He had been convicted of drug-related crimes.

Also, Haal Vsh reports that an inmate identified as Hamidollah Sahrai, a resident of Sarbaz in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, was executed in Chabahar Prison. In 2020, he was arrested for murder.

 

Aziz Ghadertaj Imprisoned in Oshnavieh Prison

On Thursday, May 26, 2022, Aziz Ghadertaj, a teacher and resident of Oshnavieh County, was imprisoned in Oshnavieh Prison for sentencing.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kurdpa, on Thursday, May 26, 2022, Aziz Ghadertaj was imprisoned in Oshnavieh Prison to serve a three-year sentence. 

On March 27, 2022, Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Oshnavieh notified Ghadetaj and four other residents of Oshnavieh about their convictions. According to this verdict, he was sentenced to three years on the charge of “membership in an anti-regime group.”

The trial of these five individuals was held last year.

On January 31, 2021, security forces arrested and transferred Ghadetaj to Urmia Prison. On March 3, 2021, after completing interrogation, he was relocated to Oshnavieh and the day after was released on bail.

During detention,  Ghadertaj has been denied access to a lawyer and family visitation.

Saturday, May 23

A group of workers and retirees of the Sugarcane Agro-Industry Company Haft-Tappeh gathered in front of the governorate building in Shush City. Recently, these protestors who are living in corporate houses of this company have received an eviction notice. They said that “we will evict the houses, but we have to receive beforehand the renovation expenses. Since these houses are too old, we have spent a lot on renovation”.

A group of poultry farmers assembled in front of the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad in Tehran. They protested against a 600% increase in livestock inputs. According to these farmers, the subsidiary companies of the Ministry sell the livestock inputs illegally on the black market.

A group of personnel of the Ministry of Petroleum who have temporary contracts gathered before this Ministry in Tehran to protest again low wages. According to these protestors, a 10 per cent increase in wages can not keep up with current inflation.

A number of workers of the Municipality of Ahar City walked off the job and went on strike to protest unpaid wages.

Sunday, May 23

A group of pensioners of the Social Security Organization gathered in front of the Planning and Budget Organization in Tehran. In Karaj, Ahvaz, Tabriz, Kerman, Rasht, and Kermanshah, the pensioners held protests before the building of the Social Security Organization in each city.

These pensioners demanded raising their pension to stand above the poverty line, addressing the supplementary insurance issues, the end year bonuses.

 

 

 

A group of workers of the Municipality of Yasuj gathered before the governorate building to protest against 5-month delays in payments. One of the workers complained: “we work 12 hours. However, we cannot even afford the travel expenses so we have to walk to work. If we protest, they threaten us with termination.”

A group of citizens, who have not lost their money by the fraudulent acts of Negin Khordo and Irtoya, held protests before Tehran Public Prosecutor’s Office. They asked for transparency and responsibility from the judiciary in examining the legal case against these companies.

 

Monday, May 23

Following the collapse of a tower in Abadan, dozens of people rallied and protested. 27 people died in this accident. On that day, at least 80 people were still trapped under rubble.

In Tehran, a number of taxi drivers working for taxi app Snapp protested against low fares, lack of insurance coverage and other issues.

Tuesday, May 24

A group of students of Allameh Tabataba’i University protested against the suppression of students and prison sentence against Hasti Amiri, one of the law students at Allameh Tabataba’i University.

Recently, the Court of Appeals upheld a one-year sentence against Hasti Amiri.

Similarly, a group of students of the Babol Noshirvani University of Technology gathered on campus to protest against the prison sentence against Hasti Amiri as well as other imprisoned civil activist Farhad Meysami and jailed teachers Mohammad Habibi and Esmail Abdi.

In Abadan, hundreds of residents gathered and protested before the collapsed tower known as Metropol. They chanted slogans against the incompetency of officials and shortcomings in rescue operations and equipment. At least 26 people died in this accident. The experts of the Abadan Engineering Organization had already warned about the construction defect of this unfinished building.

A group of workers of the Ministry of Petroleum, who have temporary contracts gathered before this Ministry in Tehran. They said that a 10 per cent increase in wages is less than the minimum wage enacted by the Ministry of Labor. Also, they have not received yet the end year bonuses.

A number of ranchmen brought some of their livestock in front of the governorate building in Mehran city to protest against the shortening of forage for livestock.

Wednesday, May 25

A group of physicians held protests in front of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education in Tehran. With placards in their hands, they protested that the government and insurance take as high as 70 per cent of their revenue.

A number of residents of a district in Fanuj City gathered at their district to protest against Natural Resources Office’s attempt to confiscate their lands to construct a mine. They also warned about the irreparable damage this mine will bring to the environment.

Thursday, May 26

In protest against the incompetency of officials led to the collapse of a tower and the death of 26 people, hundreds of people in Abadan rallied. Also in Ahvaz and Shahinshar, people rallied in support of Abadan’s protest. People chanted anti-government slogans and the police shoot tear gas into the crowd in order to scatter them.

On May 23, 2022, the unfinished 10-story Metropol building collapsed and dozens of people were killed, injured or trapped in the debris.

 

 

 

 

Ribwar Charakdari Imprisoned in Oshnavieh Prison

On Wednesday, May 25, 2022, Ribwar Charakdari was imprisoned in Oshnavieh Prison for sentencing.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kurdpa, on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, Charakdari was imprisoned in Oshnavieh Prison to serve a two years sentence.

On August 2, 2021, along with five others, Charakdari was arrested by security forces with five other individuals. On August 25, 2021, he was released on bail until the end of the legal proceeding.

On March 27, 2022, the Revolutionary Court of Oshnavieh sentenced Charakdari to one year in prison on the charge of “membership and collaboration with political opposition parties.” This verdict was later reduced to nine months.

At Least Ten Inmates Executed in Rajai-Shahr, Zahedan and Mashhad Prisons.

In recent days, at least ten inmates were executed in Rajai-Shahr, Zahedan and Mashhad Prisons.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on Wednesday, May 26, 2022, at least eight inmates were executed in Rajai-Shahr Prison.

Four of these prisoners were identified as Abbas Bitarafan, Ali Nosrati and Gholamhossein Zeynali from the ward known as Darol-Quran in Rajai-Shahr Prison. They were charged with “enmity against God” otherwise known as moharebeh. Iran Human Rights Organization has identified two other prisoners as Ali Montazeri and Vahid Mian-Abadi.

Additionally, Rasank News reported the execution of an inmate identified as Abdollah Barahooie in Zahedan Central Prison last Saturday. He was convicted of drug-related crimes.

Lastly, according to Rokna News, on May 22, an inmate identified as Elias Q, age 26, was executed in Mashhad Prison. On October 10, 2018, he hit a man with his car which led to his death. After a few hours, he turned himself in.

The most recent report from the Statistics and Publication Center of the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA) states that between January 1 of 2021 and December 20 of 2021, at least 299 citizens, including four juvenile offenders, were executed. In addition, 85 citizens were sentenced to death in this period.

As the report points out, Iran’s judicial authorities do not publicly announce over 88% of executions. These unreported executions are known as “secret executions” by human rights organizations.
