Azerbaijani Turk Activist Ali Shahi Arrested by Security Forces in Ardabil

On Friday, September 3, Azerbaijani Turk activist Ali Shahi was arrested by security forces and taken to an unknown location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, security forces searched Shahi’s home in Ardabil and confiscated some of his belongings, including his cell phone and computer.

As of this writing, the reasons for his arrest, the charges against him, and his whereabouts are unknown.

Amir Abbas Azarmvand Arrested by Security Forces in Tehran

Yesterday morning, Wednesday, September 1, Amir Abbas Azarmvand was arrested by security forces at his home in Tehran and taken to an unknown location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Azarmvand is a journalist and labor activist who has previously been detained for his activities. He was briefly detained by security forces in December 2019 and December last year.

As of this writing, the reasons for the arrest, the charges against him, and the whereabouts of the citizen are unknown.

Citizen Detained by IRGC intelligence in Ardabil Province

IRGC intelligence agents recently arrested a citizen in one of the cities of Ardabil Province.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting ILNA, the citizen was arrested for what is being called “insulting Islamic sanctities”, “disturbing the public mind”, and “publishing [disappointing] content to blacken [catastrophize] the situation in the country”.

The citizen was transferred to prison by order of a judicial official. The report does not mention the identity of the detainee, the name of the city he was detained in, or the prison where he is being held.

Citizen Arrested in Qazvin for Criticizing Ayatollah Khamenei’s Ban on US and UK Vaccine Imports

On Saturday, August 21, Reza Behrouzi, a resident of Qazvin, was arrested by security forces at his home.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Mr. Behrouzi had previously posted a video on his social media page criticizing the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ali Khamenei, for banning the import of COVID vaccines. Ayatollah Khamanei banned US and UK vaccine imports in January.

Reza Behrouzi is a worker living in the Mehregan town of Qazvin and the father of three children. As of this writing, no information is available on the whereabouts and status of this citizen.

Citizen Detained in Alborz Province for “Blasphemy in Cyberspace”

A citizen in Alborz Province was arrested by IRGC forces for what is being described as “blasphemy in cyberspace”.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Mehr, the arrested citizen has been accused of “insulting sacred things ” in their online activity.

The report does not mention the identity of the detainee.

Baha’i Citizen Sina Kamali Sarvestani Released from Adelabad Prison on Bail

On Sunday, July 11, Sina Kamali Sarvestani, a Baha’i citizen, was released on bail from Adelabad Prison in Shiraz.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, still no information is available on the reasons for his arrest and the charges against him as of this writing.

Kamali Sarvestani was arrested by security forces on June 14 and was first transferred to the IRGC Intelligence Detention Center and later to Adelabad Prison in Shiraz, where he was held for nearly a month. He has been released on bail temporarily until the end of his trial.

According to unofficial sources, more than 300,000 Baha’is live in Iran, but the Iranian constitution recognizes only Islam, Christianity, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism. Because their faith is not considered legitimate by authorities, the rights of Baha’is in Iran have been systematically violated for years.

This deprivation of the freedom to practice their religion is a violation of Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and Article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The United Nations covenant holds that every person has the right to freedom of religion, freedom of converting religion, as well as freedom of expression, individually or collectively; openly or secretly.

Citizen Detained by Security Forces in Oshnavieh

On June 23, Mohsen Azizi, a native of Oshnavieh in West Azerbaijan Province, was arrested by security forces and taken to an unknown location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting the Center for Democracy and Human Rights in Kurdistan, the report states that Mr. Azizi was detained without a court order.

Per the report, Mohsen Aziri had been interrogated previously, but the charges against him and the reasons for his detention were not disclosed.

As of this writing, no information has been given on the the organization in charge of his arrest or his current location.

Citizen Detained by Security Forces in Zanjan Province

On June 17, Amir Hossein Abedi, a native of Abhar in Zanjan Province, was arrested by security forces and taken to an unknown location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, 33-year-old Amir Hossein Abedi, son of Niatullah, is married and has three young children.

Despite repeated follow-ups by Abedi’s family, there has been no response from security agencies or the judiciary regarding the reasons for Mr. Abedi’s detention, his whereabouts, the organization in charge of his arrest, or his current condition.

 

Medical Staff Member Arrested For Protesting in Shiraz

On June 17, a member of the medical staff of Namazee Hospital in Shiraz was arrested by security forces after speaking out against the Islamic Republic.

Based on a video posted on social media, the citizen was forcefully arrested by security forces.

As of this writing, no information is available on his whereabouts.

Shaker Behrouz on a Hunger Strike in Urmia Prison

Political prisoner Shaker Behrouz has been on a hunger strike since June 13 in Urmia Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Behrouz’s hunger strike is in protest of his unjust death sentence and long-term detention in solitary confinement.

Behrouz became a member of one of the Iranian Kurdish opposition parties located in Iraq in 2018, but later that year, he got a safe-conduct letter and returned to Iran.

32-year-old Behrouz was first arrested by Ministry of Intelligence agents in March 2019 and sentenced to five years in prison for membership in an opposition party (KDP).

Later, Branch 2 of the Urmia Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Ali Sheikh Lou, further sentenced Mr. Behrouz to death on charges of armed rebellion through membership in an opposition party and the murder of a member of the Revolutionary Guards.

12 separate people testified that at the time of the murder, Behrouz was in a shop in Dizaj town of Urmia city, nowhere near the scene of the crime. However, the court refused to hear the witnesses’ statements and convicted him anyway.

An informed source additionally told HRANA that the victim’s family has stated they did not file a lawsuit against Mr. Behrouz and believe in his innocence. They are even willing to testify in court to that end.

Shaker Behrouz is the son of Salim, and a resident of the Dizaj region of Urmia city in West Azerbaijan Province.
