Iran Protests: Gonabadi Dervish Mohsen Sentenced to One Year in Prison

The Revolutionary Court sentenced Gonabadi Dervish Mohsen Afrooz to one year in prison. Afrooz was arrested amid nationwide protests and has been jailed in Damavand Prison since late October 2022.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Mohsen Afrooz, a follower of a Sufist religious minority known as Gonabadi Dervishes, was sentenced to one year in prison on the charge of “Propaganda against the regime.”

Afrooz was arrested in Firuzkuh, Tehran Province, for allegedly writing slogans on the wall. He has been jailed in Damavand Prison since his arrest in late October.
Afrooz faced other arrests and convictions on prior occasions.

Journalist Saeedeh Shafiee Arrested

On January 22, security forces arrested journalist Saeedeh Shafiee at her home in Tehran and took her to an undisclosed location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on January 22, 2023, writer and journalist Saeedeh Shafiee was arrested.

Breaking this news, Shafiee’s husband, Hassan Homayoun stated: “My wife was arrested at our home, we are deeply concerned about her health condition.”
The reason for Shafiee’s arrest, her whereabouts, and the security institution responsible for her arrest are still unknown.
On the same day, another journalist Mehrnoosh Zarei Hanzaki was also arrested in Tehran and detained in Evin prison.

According to data collected by HRANA, at least 79 journalists and media practitioners have been arrested since the beginning of nationwide protests on September 17.

 

Iran Protests: Two People Arrested in Sardasht and Dehgolan

In recent days, security forces arrested Sunni cleric Hassan Koohi in Sardasht and Shayan Sadeghi in Dehgolan and took them to undisclosed locations.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kurdpa, on January 19, 2023, Sunni cleric Hassan Koohi was arrested by security forces in Sardasht, West Azerbaijan Province.

At arrest, the agents reportedly did not show any arrest warrant.
Also, on January 18, Shayan Sadeghi was arrested by security forces at his home in Dehgolan, Kurdistan Province.
The reason for these arrests and the allegations against these individuals are still unknown.

Since the outbreak of nationwide protests, about 19500 people, including journalists, artists, lawyers, teachers, students and civil rights activists, have been arrested. So far, over protests, about 730 people have been sentenced to a total of about 12000 months imprisonment.

 

 

Two Inmates Executed in Salmas

On January 19, Salmas Prison officials executed two death-row inmates convicted of drug-related crimes and murder.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kurdpa, on January 20, 2023, Kamel Dudkanlo and Seyed Farhad Hosseini Tamrabad were executed in Salmas Prison, West Azerbaijan Province.

A few years ago, Dudkanlo was sentenced to death for drug offences. Hosseini Tamrabad was convicted of murder.

None of the official sources and media outlets inside the country has reported these executions at the time of writing.

In 2022, the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists in Iran registered 457 reports related to the death penalty. This included 92 death sentences, including the conviction of 6 people to public execution and 565 execution sentences were carried out, 2 of which have been carried out in public. Based on the announced identifications of some of the executed individuals, 501 were male and 11 were female. In addition, 5 juvenile offenders were executed in 2022, meaning they were under the age of 18 at the time they committed the crime.

 

 

Hassan Rokooei Haghighi Sentenced to Five Years in Prison

The Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced Seyed Hassan Rokooei Haghighi to five years imprisonment and additional punishment. If the verdict is upheld on appeal, based on Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, four years in prison for one count will be enforceable.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Hassan (Sepehr) Rokooei Haghighi, a resident of Tehran, was sentenced to five years in prison.

Rokooei Haghighi received four years for “assembly and collusion against national security” and one year for “propaganda against the regime.” He was also prohibited from advocating activities on the Internet for two years and was sentenced to the seizure of his cell phone.

On September 22, 2022, security forces arrested Haghighi in Tehran.

Since the outbreak of nationwide protests, about 19500 people, including journalists, artists, lawyers, teachers, students and civil rights activists, have been arrested. So far, over protests, about 730 people have been sentenced to a total of about 12090 months imprisonment.

Iran Protests: Farnaz Nazeri Sentenced to Ten Years in Prison

The Revolutionary Court sentenced Farnaz Nazeri, arrested in recent protests in Qaemshahr, to ten years in prison. She was also banned from leaving the country for two years.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Farnaz Nazeri was sentenced to imprisonment over protests.
On November 6, 2022, security forces arrested Nazeri in Qaemshahr. She was released on three-billion-toman bail temporarily until the end of legal proceedings.

An informed source told HRANA that her lawyer has not yet had access to the documents of her case.
Farnaz Nazeri is a painter and sculptor, and mother of two daughters.

The Central Prison of Karaj officials carried out the execution of two inmates convicted of drug-related crimes.

HRANA has identified one of these individuals as Sharaf Khan Akbari. These inmates were previously sentenced to death for drug offences.

Wednesday, January 18, two inmates convicted of murder were executed in Ilam Prison and Dastgerd Prison, Isfahan.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kurdpa, on January 18, 2023, Ghodrat Zibarm, age 30, was executed in Ilam Prison.

Zibarm was arrested and convicted of murder three years ago.
Iran Human Rights Organization also reported the execution of an inmate identified as Omid Karimi in Dastgerd Prison, Isfahan, on the same day.
Karimi, reportedly, was sentenced to death for murder four years ago.

Faezeh Modares Gorji Arrested in Sanadaj

Wednesday, January 18, in Sanandaj, Faezeh Modares Gorji was arrested by security forces at the annual commemoration ceremony for two victims of the Ukraine Plane Crash. She was taken to an undisclosed location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on January 18, 2023, Faezeh Modares Gorji was arbitrarily arrested in Sanandaj.

Her daughter, Jina Modares Gorji, who also was previously arrested at nationwide protests, stated: “My mother was arrested at the police station when she went to inquire about the impoundment of her vehicle license plate by the police at the annual ceremony. She was arrested for attending the annual ceremony of Aida Farzaneh and Arvin Morattab, two victims of the Ukraine plane crash.”

The location where Gorji is held and the allegations against her are still unknown.

On January 8, 2020, the Ukraine International Airlines flight 752 crashed shortly after takeoff from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport, killing all 176 people onboard. After three days of unsuccessful cover-up, on January 11, 2020, Iran authorities officially admitted that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) unintentionally shot down this Ukrainian airliner in Tehran.

Iran Protests: Six People Arrested in Piranshahr

On January 18, 2023, security forces arrested Taha Rasoulian, Ahmad Abdollahpour, Shahoo Abdollahpour, Sina Deshmir, Ghader Mohammadpour and Mohsen Ghaderi in Piranshahr and took them to an undisclosed location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kurdpa, on January 18, 2023, six residents of a village in Piranshahr County, West Azerbaijan Province, were arrested.

The agents reportedly did not show any arrest warrant. The reason for their arrests, whereabouts and allegations are still unknown.
