Five Inmates Executed in Rajai-Shahr Prison

On August 24, 2022, in separate legal cases, five inmates convicted of murder were executed in Rajai Shahr Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on August 24, 2022, quoting Rokna News, the authorities of Rajai-Shahr Prison executed five inmates.

All these individuals were executed because they were unable to convince the victims’ families to spare their lives. So far, two of them have been identified as Mohammad-Reza Sharamfar and Hadi Jozei.

Four Teacher Union Activists in Detention for 70 Days

Omid Shah Mohammadi, Parviz Ahsani, Kaweh Mohammadzadeh, and Hiwa Qoreishi, four members of the Kurdistan Teachers Trade Association, have been held at a detention facility for the past 70 days.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Omid Shah Mohammadi, Parviz Ahsani, Kaweh Mohammadzadeh, and Hiwa Qoreishi are jailed at a detention facility.

These union activists have been denied access to a lawyer and family visits. According to an informed source, despite frequent requests from their families, judicial authorities refused to grant them bail.

On June 15, 2022, security forces arrested these activists in Divandarreh, Kurdistan Province.

HRANA has reported the mass arrest of teachers and teacher union activists in different cities in June 2022.

Four Inmates Executed in Neyshabur and Shiraz

On August 23, 2022, an inmate convicted of murder was executed in Neyshabur Prison in Khorasan Province. On August 21, the authorities at Adel-Abad Prison executed three inmates, including a female convict.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Iran Human Rights Organization, on August 23, 2022, an inmate identified as Ahmad Karami, age 37, was executed in Neyshabur Prison.

An informed source said that Karami had been convicted of murder.

Similarly, on August 21, two men identified as Fariborz Jamei, convicted of drug-related crimes, Hossein Mohseni, convicted of murder, and one unidentified woman were executed in Adel-Abad Prison in Shiraz.

Neither of the executions has been reported by official sources and media outlets inside Iran so far.

HRANA’s Daily Review of Protests in Iran

On Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at least two protests took place in Iran.

About 60 laid-off workers of the vegetable oil company Jahan gathered before this company and then the Governor-General’s office in Zanjan City. The Factory managers have laid off 60 out of 85 workers due to financial issues.

A number of the medical interns of Ahvaz University of Medical Sciences protested against the University officials’ mismanagement.

 

Five Sanandaj Residents Sentenced to Total of 20 Years in Prison

The Revolutionary Court of Kurdistan sentenced five residents of Sanandaj city to a total of 20 years in prison and 25 months of suspended imprisonment.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kolbar News, the revolutionary Court sentenced Fardin Rahimi, Aliollah Veisi, Mehdi Seyfi, Sirvan Abdollahi, and Marzieh Morad-Veisi each to four years in prison and five months floating imprisonment on the charges of “propaganda against the regime, collaboration with one of the anti-regime parties, and forming illegal groups”.

These individuals were arrested in May 2021 and later released on bail after interrogation.

Two Inmates Executed in Qazvin and Isfahan

On August 22, 2022, an inmate convicted of drug-related crimes was executed in Qazvin Prison. On the same day, the authorities of Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan executed an inmate who was convicted of murder.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Iran Human Rights Organization, on August 22, 2022, in Qazvin, the prison authorities executed an inmate identified as Abolfazl Sharifi, age 29, who was convicted of drug-related crimes.

Iran Human Rights Organization also reported the execution of an inmate identified as Saeed Kamali, age 24, in Dastgerd Prison, Isfahan Province. Kamali was sentenced to death for murder. He was 19 at the time of committing the crime.

These executions have not been reported by official sources and media outlets inside Iran so far.

UN Human Rights Experts: Stop Persecution of Baha’is

In a statement issued on August 22, UN Human Rights Experts urged Iranian authorities to stop “persecution and harassment of religious minorities and end the use of religion to curtail the exercise of fundamental rights”. In recent weeks, security and judicial authorities targeted dozens of Baha’is in a new wave of arrests, house searches, land confiscations and home demolishing. 

Additionally, dozens of Baha’is were banned from entering the university. The organization demanded that the international community should not remain silent while”the Iranian authorities use overbroad and vague national security and espionage charges to silence religious minorities or people with dissenting opinions, remove them from their homes and effectively force them into internal displacement”.

Further, the organization called for an “immediate and unconditional release of all individuals detained on the basis of their religious affiliation.”

In recent weeks, in several cities across the country, security forces raided at least 36 Baha’i houses. They also arrested 44 Baha’is including three members of a now-disbanded Baha’i group known as the “Yaran e Iran” or “Friends of Iran.” 

In early August, in Roshan-Kouh village, Mazandaran Province, state-owned agencies demolished Baha’i-owned houses and grabbed their lands. During this operation, the security forces arrested a Baha’i citizen and beat another one.

Also, this year, like the previous years, many Baha’is were banned from entering the university under the pretext of “document deficiencies”. So far, HRANA has identified 63 Baha’i applicants whose enrollments have been rejected by the National Organization of Educational Testing (NOET).

HRANA’s Daily Review of Protests in Iran

On Monday, August 22, 2022, at least four protests took place in Iran.

In Isfahan, a number of farmers demonstrated in front of the Isfahan Regional Water Organization to demand their water portions and other issues.

A number of workers of Qazvin-based chemical and consumer goods Company Tolypers gathered and protested at their workplace. One of the workers said: “Since the beginning of the year, due to the raw material shortage, the factory productivity has been decreased and payments have been delayed for three to four months.”

A number of retirees of Tejarat Bank protested before the central building of this Bank in Tehran.

A number of residents of a district in Dehgolan County, Kurdistan Province, held a protest against mining activities, which have damaged farmlands, and water springs.

 

Civil Rights Activist Peyman Sokooti Still in Detention  

Gilaki civil rights activist Peyman Sokooti has been detained for the past three months in Lakan Prison, awaiting due process while he is denied access to a lawyer.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, civil rights activist from Gilan Province Peyman Sokooti has been detained for three months.

Sokooti has been charged with “acting against national security through membership in anti-regime groups, insulting the Supreme Leader and propaganda against the regime”.

On May 23, 2022, security forces arrested Sokooti, held him for ten days in an IRGC detention facility, and then transferred him to Lakan Prison in Rasht.

Student Activist Leila Hosseinzadeh Arrested in Tehran

On August 20, 2022, security forces arrested student activist and former political prisoner Leila Hosseinzadeh in Tehran and transferred her to an unidentified location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on August 20, 2022, student activist Leila Hosseinzadeh was arrested in front of her house in Tehran.

The reason for this arrest and her whereabouts are unknown so far.  

In February 2021, the Revolutionary Court of Tehran sentenced Hosseinzadeh to five years in prison and a two-year ban on online social activity on the charge of “assembly and collusion to act against national security.”  Her attendance at the birthday ceremony of imprisoned Gonabadi Dervish, Mohammad Sharifi Moghaddam, was presented during the trial as evidence to substantiate the charges. The verdict was upheld on appeal.
