Three Prisoners Executed in Urmia Prison on Drug-Related Charges

At dawn on Monday, August 2, three prisoners were executed  in Urmia Prison in West Azerbaijan Province.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, the three prisoners had previously been sentenced to death on drug-related charges.

HRANA has verified the identities of the executed prisoners as Sepehr Abbasnejad (Beigzadeh), son of Bahman, Eskandar Zar’e, son of Ebrahim, and Hamzeh Rezaei, son of Reza.

Iran ranks first in the world in citizen executions per capita, according to international organizations. The Statistics and Publication Center of the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA) reported that between January 1 and December 20 of 2020, at least 236 citizens were executed.

One of these citizens was executed publicly, and two were juvenile offenders. An additional 95 citizens were sentenced to death.
According to the same report, more than 72% of executions in Iran are not reported by the government or the judiciary, which human rights organizations call “secret” executions.

The execution of these citizens has not yet been announced by Iranian media or official sources as of this writing.

Two Prisoners Executed in Mashhad Prison on Charges of Murder

On Sunday, August 1, two prisoners who were previously sentenced to death in separate cases on murder charges were executed in Mashhad Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Rokna, the report identifies the executed prisoners as 57-year-old Hassan and 61-year-old Ali.

Three Citizens from Salas-e Babajani County Arrested and Transferred to Detention Center in Kermanshah

Three citizens from Salas-e Babajani County were recently arrested by security forces and transferred to a detention center in Kermanshah for interrogation.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kurdpa, the citizens have been identified as Arkan Bahrami, Khalil Ramezani and Khaled Mirzaei from the county of Salas-e Babajani.

As of this writing, the reasons for the arrests and the charges against Bahrami, Ramezani, and Mirzaei are not known. The report does state, however, that the security forces detained the three citizens in relation to “propaganda against the regime in cyberspace”.

An informed source said that Khalil Ramezani was released on bail two days ago. Bahrami and Mirzaei are still in detention.

Prisoner on Day 47 of a Hunger Strike in Greater Tehran Prison

As of today, Thursday, July 29, Alireza Ziba Halat Monfared has been on a hunger strike for 47 days in the Greater Tehran Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Ziba Halat Monfared was imprisoned after being accused of financial crimes.

In February 2020, a spokesman for the judiciary expressed that the 25-year prison sentence of Alireza Ziba Halat had been confirmed and finalized.

He went on hunger strike following his request for meeting with judicial officials, but so far none of the officials has responded to the request. Ziba Halat Monfared has lost about 23 kg during this period.

 

Death Sentences Issued to Two Men in Tehran

Two death sentences were recently issued to male defendants in Tehran.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Shargh newspaper, a defendant named Farid was sentenced to death by the Second Branch of the Criminal Court of a Tehran province for the murder of his colleague.

Another defendant was sentenced to death by a criminal court in Tehran province for the murder of his aunt.

Christian Convert Hamed Ashouri Sent to Karaj Central Prison

On Tuesday, July 27, Christian convert Hamed Ashouri was sent to Karaj Central Prison to endure his sentence.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting the website Article 18, the Court of Appeals upheld Ashouri’s ten-month prison sentence the previous day.

Hamed Ashouri had been arrested by security forces in Fardis city in Karaj, in March 2017, and transferred to Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj for interrogation. He was temporarily released after ten days. It is alleged that security forces raided Mr. Ashouri’s home while he was in custody.

A hearing on the charges against this citizen was held in February 2020 in Branch 4 of the Revolutionary Court of Karaj. Finally, in April of this year, Mr. Ashouri was sentenced to 10 months in prison on charges of propaganda against the regime.

Despite the fact that Christians are recognized as a religious minority under Iranian law, security forces nevertheless pursue the issue of Muslims converting to Christianity with particular sensitivity.

The Iranian regime targets Christian converts despite Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which state that every individual has the right to freedom of religion and belief and freedom to express it openly or secretly.

Three Citizens Arrested by Security Forces Without Court Order in Bukan and Divandarreh

Three citizens were recently arrested without warrants in Bukan and Divandarreh.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kurdpa, two citizens were recently arrested by security forces in Bukan City and transferred to one of the security detention centers in Urmia for interrogation.

The report identifies these citizens as Shamzin Mohammadi, from the village of Ali Kand in Bukan city and Anvar Maleki, also from Bukan.

On Monday, July 25, another citizen was arrested by security forces in the city of Divandarreh in Kurdistan Province. Fouad Habibi was arrested by security forces and then taken to an unknown location.

All three of these arrests were made without a court order, and, despite inquiries from their families, no information is available on the charges against them as of this writing.

Meysam Gholami is Still in Detention in the Greater Tehran Prison 5 Months After his Arrest

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Meysam Gholami was arrested by security forces in March and transferred to the Greater Tehran Prison after a week in Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj.

Regarding the same case, Mehran Azari and Fariba Asadi were arrested by the agents of the Ministry of Intelligence in February and transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison, and later to the Greater Tehran, and Qarchak Varamin prisons, until they finally were released on bails of 400 and 500 million tomans.

Ms. Asadi is said to have been beaten at the time of the arrest.

The case of these citizens has been transferred to Branch 2 of the Shahriar Revolutionary Court on charges such as “propaganda against the regime through printing and distribution of banners and leaflets, gathering and colluding against national security, membership in opposition groups.”

Meysam Gholami, a native of Tehran, is currently being held in Ward 9 of Section 2 in Greater Tehran Prison.

 

Nahid Taghavi and Narges Adib Facing Medical Negligence in Evin Prison

Nahid Taghavi and Narges Adib are currently facing medical negligence from authorities in Evin Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Iranian-German dual citizen Nahid Taghavi has been denied medical treatment in Evin Prison despite suffering from COVID-19.

Ms. Taghavi was previously transferred to quarantine along with several prisoners with symptoms after receiving a positive COVID test. Despite the widespread prevalence of COVID-19 among inmates in the women’s ward of Evin Prison, Ms. Taghavi has not been approved for for medical leave.

Political prisoner Narges Adib, who suffers from a number of health issues, is currently being held in the women’s ward of Evin Prison as she serves out her sentence.

Ms. Adib suffers from a variety of medical problems such as respiratory distress, bronchitis, asthma, and joint pain. She was sent to the hospital for an MRI weeks ago but has not yet received test results or medication.

Death Sentences Issued to Defendant in Mashhad

A defendant was sentenced to two death sentences by the Fifth Branch of the Criminal Court of Khorasan Razavi Province.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting the Khorasan newspaper, the defendant was sentenced on a charge of double homicide.

According to this report, the convicted is a 45-year-old man named Mahdi who, with the help of his friends, killed two people with a firearm.

The Court of Khorasan Razavi sentenced the other defendants to imprisonment and deportation on charges such as assisting in murder and carrying and keeping weapons.

The verdicts issued by the court can still be appealed in the Supreme Court.
